Didn't Phil Jarratt do a Sydney radio surf report back in the day?
I have a memory, maybe it is a dream, of watching a free to air channel's profile of Phil.
Scene : Late at night. Phil, in his room, pouring another drink and lovingly putting on another Frank Sinatra record. I'm pretty sure it was Sinatra's classic, 'In the wee small hours of the morning'.
Cut to dawn, which is only a few hours later. Phil awakes with the alarm and very cautiously and tenderly walks across to the window and opens up the venetian blinds the barest minimum on account of his alcohol-induced light sensitivity. Phil peers at the water thru the ocean glimpse provided from his house which is a couple of hundred metres from his beach. Phil then rings the radio station with his cheery and authoritative daily all-Sydney surf report. Phil then goes back to bed.
It was a pretty neat little film piece.
Phil expands on his surf reporting 'career' in his memoirs, Life Of Brine.
Good memory, Wal. It was a show called GTK on the ABC just before the evening news. The whole filthy story, as Stu says, is in the book, out in a couple of weeks, including adventures with the Pig of Steel and our very short-lived 2JJ Serf Show.
Phil, I was trying to invent some outrageous fictional event to ask if you had included it in the book. Then I realised I couldn't come up with anything that wasn't entirely feasible. Looking forward to a (insert adjective of choice) read.
