G-Land info
Don't know what the surf camp operators would think ? Didn't some Aussie start a daily boat run from Medewi ferrying surfers to Gland a few years back ..........surf camp operators shut him down ?
A 10 k return journey on foot carrying your board and gear in Indo heat after a day of surfing ..good luck you might manage it once, fuck that would hard work.
Take a big stick on the walk to combat the pack's of feral dog's .
Do they try and round you up FG?
I did that walk in a couple of times carrying all the gear to survive it was 11 km , backpacks & food & water , rangers permit necessary & packs of ciggys for the locals
Dave Sparkes wrote an article about it in Tracks once. It did not sound like fun.
Nowadays they stop you at the ranger station, charge you park entry, charge you to drive you straight to the point, charge you to look after your bike then and make sure you hit up the camps for a day rate, about 50-75US per day. They put a visitor tax on all park visitors now, included in camp rates. The rangers have got wise and are cashing in!
Its pretty much not worth trying the overland solo run these days.
Im sure you could also hire a longboat from that town at the east end of the bay, measures about 20 Km on google earth, do that in under an hour with one or two 40 hp, get in early before the wind then charge home with a tail wind.
There's no village or boat in the se side of the bay tho . Grajagan only
You can stay there with three square meals for a hundred a day?
Hardly worth trying to scam it for that price.
Wouldn't call it a scam more an adventure in the spirit of the true Indo surf travel experience.
Sorry i meant west end of the bay, the town of Grajagan, get a few mates to throw in , anchor the boat out the back, take a heap of food and water etc.
Id expect it to probably cost $100-150 for boat and driver for the day though, so if only $100 to stay maybe not worth it, and the camps might try to get your boat to move on though.
Maybe worth it early season just before the camps open if you get a good wind pattern..
seeing those crater rims for the first time gave me a real sense of insignificance and I'm glad they allowed me to pass on by.
Met a bloke staying in the water at G land doing that last month - staying at someone's house and riding or getting a lift in, said it was taking about an hour
he did it one day and decided to get a room in one of the camps instead
It's a shit road
Hey guys - I'm planning to fly to gland around end of August to surf g land (coming from San Francisco) but want to make sure I score there so would prefer to do my booking in Bali so I can be flexible in case I need to go with a different option. For example if it's 4x overhead for a week I'll go somewhere else and then come to gland when the swell mellows a bit.
I guess my question is - Should I be concerned that Bobby's is booked if I wait and book in Bali? After all I do want at minimum and AC room.
Appreciate the feedback. Thanks!
Btw - realize I'm not flying to gland - boating to gland and flying to Bali. Thanks!
August is usually busy so its a gamble but you could wait until you're in bali (you will get a cheaper price) and see swell direction more than size. If its ssw or south g-land sw -wsw somewhere else. But if its too big at g-land it has other novelty wave options that are better than anything around here.
Chickens and 2020's are good waves. The worst rooms in g-land arent that bad anyway. AC will probably be booked out though, everyone used to love bobbies too, not sure about this year.
Thanks and good point on the crowd factor. Almost makes me want to consider changing to go in September instead.
Sept just the same with worse winds
So question for those in the know, is it possible to walk in to gland and get some waves, without being a kamikaze? Can you stay in a close village, ride to within 5 km and walk the rest with water, snacks and board, have a session and walk back out OK in 1 day?
