Marketing lures for the surf and weather enthusiast

Got a press release from Oakley (US) this morning, they've updated their surf report App (they were first to market many years ago). This phrase caught my attention:

"Surfing too much can cause strains in any relationship, so why not make it up to them by taking them on a beautiful sunset walk or peaceful sunrise stroll. With Weather Reports, Tide Charts and Sunrise/Sunset times, your significant other can take that relaxing walk on the beach—while you squeeze in a quick session."

Seriously?

I've seen some pretty corny marketing ideas in the past, but for a large, credible company like Oakley with strong ties to the core surf market, this is a very strange angle to push.

Hey Ben,

I know we have had our differences in the past but may I say while your bullshit antenna has correctly latched onto this Oakley blurb for some of us, perhaps just me, we/I only ever see bullshit with the surf industry and in particular pro-surfing. For sure they are brilliant surfers but the end game is always marketing.

Sure floyd, I know there's only a small audience for this kinda thing.

Just surprised it was with such a strong brand-centric company like Oakley rather than say, a general media company broadening their scope into surf and beach culture.

Oakley have always executed really strong ideas and campaigns; this one seems to be a step in an unexpected direction.
