Hi everybody, first time poster, long time lurker on the forum.

I was wondering if you guys would be interesting in taking a survey on surfing (and action sports) and their relationship to marketing? It's a short survey, should only take a minute or two to complete and would really help my group out on our research project.

Everything is anonymous, no information other than the answers are collected, and I'd be happy to answer any questions about the survey.

Here's the link and many thanks!

Who's the survey for? Will you be sharing the results?

I am a graduate student at the University of San Francisco pursuing my masters in Sport Management. The purpose of our survey is to determine whether companies that use surfing, and action sports in general, in their marketing strategies alienate the core consumers, or participants, of those sports.

Once our research study is complete I would be happy to share the results here. I have also posted the survey on a few other surf forums as well as some ones for snowboarding, motocross, and skating. Although, as a lifelong surfer, I am most interested in what the surfer respondents have to say.

MB I think you are on to something but the issue is that they couldn't give a stuff about the participants. They market to a mass audience whose brief attention span can be captured by a dramatic image.

You have a very valid point Blindboy. We are trying to demonstrate how the mass marketing appeal approach that briefly captures the attention of the masses is too short lived to justify estranging the core consumers and participants. And the ensuing backlash may actually be more harmful to their brand if it becomes too mainstream.

And while it would be nice if the results of this study that show this would mean something to the surf (and action sports) industry manufacturers and motivate them to use a more holistic approach to their advertising, I'm not that optimistic my little academic research project could accomplish that. But I'll sure as heck try.

The survey is only two pages long, we're trying to keep it short and sweet with only the most necessary questions. Haters are welcome too!

mmm, ok, I'm a tad confused. I just went through the survey and can not see how the questions, or answers to them will actually achieve your desired outcome:

"The purpose of our survey is to determine whether companies that use surfing, and action sports in general, in their marketing strategies alienate the core consumers, or participants, of those sports. "

There was no question that asked me about that? I think the survey is missing some questions.

Equally, if your aim is:

"We are trying to demonstrate how the mass marketing appeal approach that briefly captures the attention of the masses is too short lived to justify estranging the core consumers and participants. And the ensuing backlash may actually be more harmful to their brand if it becomes too mainstream."

Again, where are the questions that ask about that?

Also, the question about 'participation' is for based on a year, which seems quite a long period when the highest answer option was 20+ ... I'd guess even the most unmotivated weekend warrior would achieve that ... so, am not sure of it is really relevant to the core goals.

I'm confused.

Maybe the survey is not working correctly and questions were missing when I looked at it?

????

PS: Oh, and when I looked at it, there was no question about income.

Don't tap on it...?
Its a classic scam that will read all your bank account details from your computer, all your ex and now 7 new girlfriends phone numbers/emails, the cheapest beer you drink and from where, what porn you are watching, all your FB details just to fuck you up, your best kept secrets of synoptic chart readings with swell and snow. As well as where you live.......?
Phew.
