Pointer time of year

@ salty one - I'm all for looking for other alternative but don't see the harm in removing sharks who are or have posed a direct risk to the public until a viable alternative is proven in use. Why is killing a GWS senseless, stupid and downright disrespectful but killing any other animal is not? Where do you think your dinner came from, the steak tree? Why is there not the uproar over duck or roo hunting as there is over the killing of the GWS. There is a fairly large hunting community in Australia who don't cop nearly as much flack as the WA government did over its drum line policy. The only reason killing GWS is any different to going duck hunting is because the GWS is supposedly endangered, but there is a multitude of evidence to support the GWS population has recovered and is much larger than was previously thought. It's not like the government is going to declare open season on the GWS and hunt it to extinction.
But everyone is entitled to their opinion and it seems that those who are against culling of the GWS seem to think it is wrong because it is "senseless, stupid and downright disrespectful" but I don't see how removing a potential threat from the ocean that may (or may not) save a human life is any different from removing a non threatening species from the ocean to put on your dinner table, taking a life is taking a life for whatever reason it may be and as long as we don't go crazy and 'wipe the entire species of the face of the planet I can't see what the problem is. Is it not a bit hypocritical to say don't kill X,Y and Z because its stupid and senseless but go to town on A,B and C so I can have my leather shoes, my steak dinner, my crocodile handbag and my oak furniture.

Well always good not to assume things eh.. for you information I actually dont eat steak or other meat . My dinner came from my garden actually that I grew myself. As for hunting, I don't like any of it and don't support it. Oh and by the way, the sharks are shot in the head and left to drown. Maybe their fins are cut off and exported to Asia to be sold to go into soup. You tell me, where is the sense in that? And where is the sense in governments spending close to 7 million dollars to kill and dump sharks ? 7 million. when you could just buy a different wetsuit.

@Salty let me buy you the wetsuit......happy to test it are you ?
Shot in the head means there dead mate not left to drown- and fins cut off and sent to asia for soup ..you fucking tool.

W.A fisheries head scientist - Esperance attack bite marks indicate most likely a GWS.

Sharkgate I say.

There have been tests done already that have been put online if you want to check them out. Why are you so negative, so close-minded about it? Don't you think that 7 million could be better spent on education and health? Many of the sharks that were shot didnt die at first shoot. Why are you being so rude? It is a fact that shark fin is being exported overseas by the tonnes. Big industry, so it is possible that there would be people looking to make an extra quid. I am not saying it is happening. I said maybe, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. Apparently the surfer was reported saying that he was bitten by bronze whalers. So doesn't add up that they killed a G.W in response

@evosurfer , yeh i reckon there a few decent options out there. those shark barriers also look to be effective

Shark species confirmed to be a white from bite marks.
Thumbs up to WA Fisheries for being on the scene as fast as possibly and not only removing the one shark, but also a 2nd one based on facts provided by the locals.

I'm off to indo I am, more chance of a shark attack than a terrorist attack, ban the burka and slay the fucken sharks I recon.

If any of yous surf in the Esperance area then you would know that there are very often many different types of sharks not to far away. Strait out at that spot are many islands with seals resting on them. There may be a problem ,there may not , just a bit of perspective for you. If you surf in that area you are most defiantly at risk of being attacked. Every time I surf in that area I know that it is very possible that i could be bitten. It wasn't a surprised to see that unfortunately this young fella got bitten.
This area has ALWAYS had many sharks so the risk there has always been high. I'm surprised more people aren't chomped out there.bommies get surfed regularly and when your out there that is the first thing you would expect to happen.

Gday mtown,
As someone that is in an area that is well known to have a fairly large shark population and has been the site of a recent attack, what is your view on the matter? Are you in favour of drum lining or removing/killing sharks that come in close/hang around areas swimmers/surfers frequent or against? Would be nice to hear from someone who is at greater risk than the majority of us.

Saltyone, you are right I shouldn't make assumptions and although I disagree with your stance on the matter, I do respect it and think that you are one of few that has a leg to stand on when arguing that the GW shouldnt be killed as you do not support the killing of animals in general, so hats of to you and much respect

A piece out of that "An internal acoustic transmitter was recovered from one of the sharks, but there was no receiver beacon at Wylie Bay to warn surfers."
There are sweet bugger all recievers anywhere outside of Perth.
Tag more sharks, put in more recievers and give us some realtime information and make the information public!!!
Not everyone lives in Perth and the regional recievers are downloded every 6-12 months. Not much help to anyone finding out 6 months later that there were several whites cruising someones local beach.
4.5m White Pointer seen at yorkes today..legs-up over the weekend!!
