More about currents not wind I would think
Liz,
It's all explained very well here.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! the water gets cool in the gold coast? how soft! Considering the ocean can rarely change by more than a degree or so in a a day... must be an absolute bummer choosing to wear boardies and T or boardies and vest...fuck me, what happens when ya local runs the keg out! 'my beers a degree or two warmer than the last!'
try puttin on a 4-5mm suit in a 6' onshore down vicco way cos ya know it aint gettin better for a week!
Woohcs, with a strong upwelling event water temps can plummet a good 4-5degs down to winter like temps! This makes a big difference and most people would freeze after an hour or two in boardies, so it's always good to be able to identify this phenomena in advance.
woohcs, water temp at a well known north coast point break at 6am this morn was 17deg c,after the previous 24hrs of north wind........a sth wind change by 10 am......water temp at 4pm 22deg c.
Hi Liz here! Can someone please explain to me why when we have a really hot North Easterly wind on the Gold Coast for a few days.... the water goes ice cold suddenly?!!! I would have thought the cooler southerly winds would drop the water temp? Thanks Swell people ;)
