One can imagine the Peninsula, Island and Surfcoast surfers pestering Craig in the forecast comments, asking if the weather will be nice enough to make the run into Melbourne for a wave on the weekend!

Starting construction next month, say will be operating easter 2019.

1,000 waves an hour?

Hmmm bit skeptical on this and quality.

Ahhh the serenity and the smell of jet fuel, perfect. Huh, how can a N/S oriented lagoon ALWAYS produce offshore winds?!!!!
Isn' there a wave pool already under construction in QLD?
That's false advertising bikinis in Melbourne, more like snow jackets.

Melbourne is so grid-locked with traffic I just wonder who the target market is. Its access road from Melbourne is the tullamarine freeway which is permanently choked with traffic and/or road works. Its feeder freeways - the monash, the ring road and the calder are also equally congressed. So who in the right mind would set out for a pool surf knowing they would have to fight all that fucking traffic and road works? It really is wedged in a corner surrounded by filthy roads and freeways. Its location is also extremely open and windy, me thinks a big white elephant after the novelty wears off regardless of price and wave quality .... just wonder how much the state government has chipped in?

A smarter location would have been between Melbourne and Geelong, then you would have got Melbourne surfers and West Coast surfers (novelty factor) and possible tourist going down that way.

Agree with Guy Smiley. The freeways to get to the airport are a bloody car park, and there is always roadworks. Takes me a few minutes to drive to my locals, getting to this joint from Geelong would be an all day mission. You gotta leave by 5.30 am just to get a decent run to the airport. When would the average life-long competent surfer get to use it once you throw in all the beginners, kooks, logs, tourists, alleged 'Olympic training', competitions, non surfing activities, etc etc. A 2 hour surf would no doubt cost around $200 minimum, and to get most benefit you would have to be sure the wind direction is optimal. The wave park in Wales is by all accounts pretty gutless, doesn't have barrel sections, the water is freezing cold, closed over winter and seriously overpriced for what you get. If I win the lottery, I may go once, but I'm happy with what the ocean brings. This thing will be a white elephant, probably sooner than we think.

This will be targeted at those pesky ( wake surfers ) . Whats the bet they install a rope system to help them get into the wave . or some sort of ramp to slide down into it ? I can't believe if their was Government funding that they haven't gone with the National Water Sports Centre . They have a cable park there now , would make it easy for all the wake surfers to walk across into it .

Stok Friday, 23 Feb 2018 at 5:31pm

I live it St Kilda. Takes 25 mins to drive to the airport off peak and anywhere from 30-45 mins in peak. Simple answer is don't go in peak periods. It would beat driving for afterwork surfs in summer (which I do sometimes), which take anywhere from 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 50. Also, the benefit of going after hours in winter under lights is a big selling point.

Tulla's fairly windy but picks up the prevailing Northerlys more than the Westerly's/Southerly's. A short fetched wave pool is hardly going to get too choppy if it's directly onshore. Hopefully it's oriented such that Northerly is offshore.

Some solar heating would help in winter, but in summer it will be a warm bath. I've been surfing in boardies here in Viico since Jan, and the bay is even warmer. A small body of water such as the pool will be easily 24 degrees+. Winter...well probably 10 degrees without heating!

The cost is one thing that worries me...driving to the surf costs $25 in petrol, but getting to the wave pool will be $10 in tolls + petrol ($5?) + cost of a 1 hours session ($60-$120?).

The second thing is availability. There has to be at least a few thousand surfers in Melbourne, a lot of them are very rich. I'd be surprised if it's not booked out solid, and the less financially free surfers aren't priced out.

Also, about location...well Tullamarine is relatively cheap in terms of land cost and is well serviced with major utilities (water, power etc.). There's plenty of better places for it but they're hardly going to rip up parklands next to the CBD, or install massive amounts of infrastructure to put it halfway between Melbs and Geelong.

It'll never be as good as the real thing but it'll definitely be fun.

I think we're all being awfully polite about touted URBNSURF Easter egg hunt.

Xmas holiday snaps by Pinhead are also to be rewarded.
Black Opps recon' hugs the Razor Wire then storms the bunker.(Nice work)

Gives us a zoom at dynamic engineering + Epic Pool wall offset by rescued trees.
Say won't those trees litter the pool? A very tidy site with neat soil mounds.
The site is well supervised so they have an outside chance with good weather.
I'm guessing that roofing iron is being tempered as curved formwork. Otherwise?

PFAS is surely a big worry to site workers as with our local Gold Coast Airport

Compare Pinheads photos to the Promo Shot.
Having a closer look shows that URBNSURF are near finished the business end.
The Engine Room/WaveMaker housing is complete with divider wall.
All the pool perimeter walls are complete.(Check photo...It does look that way!)

Deepend contouring is complete (pinhead thinks they're ready to concrete it?).
(Pause)
URBNSURF are not concreting the base...they're choosing recycled (HDPE) liner.
As I said recently the risk of tears & Water flooding with PFAS is ever present!
I highly doubt authorities would let you keep the same pool lining after PFAS.

Those 2 saved trees also weirdly feature in Promo shot. (perfectionists?).

These guys have their layout on track & running pretty darn smooth I might add.
Pinhead equally waited for exact moment to xray all raw tech for his photo shoot.

Hard to tell if amenities contractor is maybe awaiting council approval.
As said with good weather and a 2nd wind they may get back on The Bunny Trail.

Thanx again indo-dreaming that's a rare find + great insight into new Oz Tech.

URBNSURF have ramped up new online sites & feedback & it's good to see.

Check out pretty decent FAQ (general) Perth/Syd updates.

Gold Coast x 2 / Darwin / Sydney / Melbourne / W.A. (Surfable Wavepools)
Wet'n'Wild style WavePools ran (10m on - 10m off) now (20m on -10m off)

Gold Coast / Darwin / Sydney all run Australian Surfing Surf Groms / Lessons
World Champion Surf Coaches + LifeGuard +(Boards / Wet tops / Drink / Photo)

Australian Surfing endorsed Wavepool prices per hour includes WavePool Guru.
Surf Sessions cost ...Gold Coast $30/hr + Darwin-$23/hr + Sydney -$25/hr
Any of these Pools can raise Wave Height to 1m-1.5m + contour 10 shapes.
Cost should not rise by wave height/shape,rather more so by Pool Rule labor force.

Rule 1...No legropes allowed in Wavepools > ( W.A./VIC/NSW/QLD/N.T.) re: link

Hours usually 7:00am - 9:00am

Pool Numbers dictated by Safety. Most Coaches prefer less surfers than maximum.
Most sessions run over 2 hours so min price is 2 x hourly min.
1 Surf Coach prefers 4 surfers.
1 Surf Coach industry Maximum is 6 surfers. (Photos show 5 surfers as the Norm!)
Council Maximum 1 Surf Coach - 8 Surfers...(Coach.."Too Chaotic!")

Tales of a Surf & Wave Pool Coach. Telling interview from the man on the spot.
http://www.surfparkcentral.com/the-art-of-the-saltless-surf-school-lesso...

Sydney Wavepool - Sunday Nippers board training + Swim + 2 SLSC visits.
Cost = [Nipper Member$hip] + [2x Wavepool $eason Passe$ > Adult + Nipper]
SLSA ask for 1 Untrained Coach/Official Volunteer - 20 nippers

URBNSURF will earn 4 x more from Nippers than Surfing Australia/Groms Deal.
SLSA are backed by Pollies with open Cheque Books.(Hard to resist Big Bucks)
Just like real Beaches...Clubbies will easily storm the Wavepools (Cost no object)

Oz Wavepark Rules (2007...2019) Legropes are prohibited.
Max 8 Surfers per Wave Zone
URBNSURF insists 4 wave Zones = 32 surfers in pool at one time is Council Max'
URBNSURF have divider so 16 surfers per side is maximum allowed.(2 LifeGaurds)

Surf Coaches run leggie free lessons from the deep end. They know better alright.
Beefing up Wavepool numbers +[L] leggies. Sells out Wavepool Rules for profit
Greedy Ploy may result in backpay Compo to Oz Surf coaches.(re: Taxis v Uber)

2005 was the end of Fibreglass/Hard boards in Oz Water Theme Parks
Toboggan Water Slides/Chutes or Aqua Planers as they were better known.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_former_Dreamworld_attractions#/med...
Legropes are also banned in Wavepools. (Adaptive are now accepted)
In a 'confined setting' Leggie ramps up board danger for pool goers & rescues.
Water Park attendants Clear Wipeouts! Next...No time to release rider from Leggie!

Link: Nippers/Surfboard Promos are the only exception since 2005 Bans.
https://www.ausleisure.com.au/news/wetnwild-launches-second-nippers-season/

Oz 'Waveparks' have banned fibreglass boards /Leggies since (Day 1) mid '1980's

I've not read reports on how Wavepools intend bypassing obvious restrictive bans.
Existing Wavepools can/do adapt to non restrained 'Soft Boards' from 2007

Former Wave Circuit..Thunder River Rapids {R.I.P} WaterPark Safety is Front Page!
Wavepools now have stricter safety standards.
New Bigger Wave/pools just rock up & tear up 30+ years of WavePool Rules. WTF?

I'm not judging as I too was pissed off when they banned the Aqua Planers.

I'm gonna ramp these Wavepool Rules up a notch....
Sean Connery (007/James Bond)was a Wavepool Lifeguard.(Portobello)

1936-1979 Portobello(Edinburgh)Wavepool was first to allow Surfboards.
