Hi guys, i'm 1 year into surfing and looking to transition from my 7'6 54L funboard to something that will help me progress further. Looking at either a 6'4 44L DHD Black Diamond or a 6'4 43.23L Hypto Krypto due to their versatility across most surf conditions. Surfing beach breaks along the gold coast. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

What stage are you at with your surfing? Can you paddle into unbroken waves? Trim and/or turn?

A 10L drop in surfboard volume (let alone the shorter length) will feel quite a lot different, and will affect your ability to paddle into waves. So, you'll need to give yourself plenty of time to adjust.

The cheaper one.
Or something second hand about the same size.
I don’t think you need to fork out $900+ to take the next step at this stage.

@thermalben - Yeah i am paddling into unbroken waves and starting to trim down the line. Don't feel like i can do much turn wise but wasnt sure if that was due to the board feeling like a log.

Thanks for the advice.

@lostdoggy - Yeah both options are second hand, would love to buy brand new but cant see the value in it at this stage of my surfing. The DHD black diamond is cheaper and both boards seem to have very similar characteristics and reviews. Thanks.

This review is what got me thinking about moving away from the Hpyto Krypto - https://www.stokedfortravel.com/hayden-shapes-hypto-krypto-review/?unapp...

Never surfed the DHD but have surfed a 6’2” Hypto Krypto a few times so my impression was it is stable, a good paddler and sedate. Perfect for a transition board

Good advice from lostdoggy as well

Surfing the Gold coast, buy a Gold coast shapers board..get the DHD...you'll be fine unless your an old big heavy critter.

if you are just starting to trim down the line that board will be fine for probably the next 12 months at least.

it's not holding you back.

when you can do cutbacks, bottom turns, re-entries, top turns going both ways then consider a new stick.
