INDONESIA SURF TRIP, no one surfing -

john.callahan's picture
john.callahan started the topic in Friday, 18 Jul 2025 at 4:48pm

We are looking for three (3) surfers to make a surf trip to Indian Ocean Indonesia in August - new location, not likely to be anyone surfing, prime season with steady SE monsoon dry season wind and consistent SW swell.

I have added this surfEXPLORE project to my listings on the Waverii platform, access via the link for details - thanks!

John, i'm starting to doubt you'll get people interested even if YOU paid them to go with you.

Those waves in the video are below average for Indo, add in that you'll be there and going to jail is sounding more appealing.

If nothing else JC has done a good job stirring the pot in an entertaining thread.
Aw not a hypocrite ... who in the past has started multiple threads about his own goings on,trips to cactus , now indo, flora and fauna etc etc but gets offended when someone else does .... "not even a paying subscriber "
Even burls is indignant!
Keep it up!

Can you post the video , I can’t find it .

As a bird observer I go to remote areas of Indo , I’m also a surfer, whilst birding, one of my eyes is always on the coastline, I watch swells and birds . They are both things of beauty. AW

I actually mention in one of the Pacific Indonesia chapters in THE BOOK that the only people that rival surfers in their fanatical commitment are birdwatchers, that they are willing to climb and camp anywhere from misty mountains to soggy swamps to find rare birds and deserve our admiration and respect.

wow!!! finally, something moderately engaging about this book.. a quirk, an anecdote, some sort of personality! BIRDS!! (I spend time in a western surf place where trout fishing and bird watching is about all they have going on, tourism-wise.. )

I assume it is not an exhaustive reference book, as it has come across, with the page counts, word counts, and ummm.... not much else.. so will need some juice, some quirks.. like birds!).. you are NEARLY making conversation, and therefore, NEARLY marketing on a site @calhoun..

well done to you, sir!

Not a reference book at all - nor is it an Atlas of the World's Best Waves, etc.

Quite entertaining, one of the Haiti chapters feature an encounter with an authentic Haitian Zombie, a product of the Voudou belief system, etc

I shall stop that nonsense immediately - members of the Swellnet constituency are getting too excited for the release and may STORM the nearest available bookstore to get their hands on a copy of surfEXPLORE: Discovering New Surfing Locations Worldwide after 29 September.

We have to consider property damage, etc.

You post a video of a so called secret spot for us to guess where it is, I failed geography on that one.
I think the footage is from somewhere east of Waigeo and west of. Vanimo (Papua New Guinea) or on the ‘right arm’ of NE Sulawesi on the Minihasa Peninsula, colour of the water in both locations reminds me of the geology of those areas.

Wrong again - not even close.

I guess since the waves suck so bad you wouldn't be interested in knowing where it is -

And yes - we were in Morotai in 2004, we were out surfing when the Rip Curl boat came from around the corner and saw that we were already there, ha ha.

You can see a seleção of that material at this link -

Rather disappointing - not a single person can name the location in the video.

Instead, they have to badmouth the quality of the waves to divert attention from their lack of knowledge.

Not a single person can name the Indian Ocean Indonesia location for Callahan's Secret Indonesia Surf Trip - so they badmouth the cost structure to divert attention from their lack of knowledge.

Not as smart nor as knowledgable as they think they are.

Maybe you should sign up and make your USD $1500 deposit for the project and you could learn something from someone who actually knows what they are talking about - and is NOT just another bulldust distributor, with their vague descriptions of locations and allusions to "knowing things".

^^ he was a good-natured lush, a womaniser, a pot head, a talented boat builder, lived below the poverty line intentionally in the W.Indies, where he was loved by the local villagers. Sailed across the atlantic alone at 16, (crossed it 39 times since!) turned his back on a military career to live how he wanted on a boat with whatever woman he could convince to duck out of life for a few years. I’m not interested in your mystical waves as after watching that video I wouldn’t bother searching when there’s far better waves to be had . Charging top dollar for B & C grade waves , while staying in basic accommodation with basic indo meals is in my opinion a scam . The photos of the waves I put up have been surfed for over 3 decades and still remain virtually uncrowded , thankfully you haven’t found them . Have you thought about hiring a PR firm ?

My kids affectionately refer to it as my taste in good-boring movies. he's a feeble old feller with a leathery patina that makes iggy pop look like a newborn in the film. He needs the help of the kind people around him, it is kinda just him over a couple of weeks alone on his boat in a village harbour in Carriacou, popping into the shops, fixing his boat, trying to work out what the end of an astonishing life well-lived is about..

Years have passed but the coconut palms are still the same - the seafloor rose some 2 meters after the March 2005 earthquake in this area, but the trees are the same.

Oh, John this is a great game , haven’t you worked it out yet.

We know nothing about any of your secret spots, we just bait you over and over, your rage builds to a crescendo, your ego comes boiling to the surface, you stutter, stammer and then spill your egotistical guts all over yourself , what a mess, you simply cannot conclude that others might know a bit about ‘your secret spots’, because you are the only one who is meant to know anything about them, because when you first appeared on our great Swellnet, you told us.

‘I am John Seaton Callahan UCLA graduate etc.etc. World renowned surfEXPLORER,author , surf travel guide, keeper of all the worlds secret surf spots’
Your rebuttals are comical and come at speed because nobody is meant to know more about the caper than you. How dare us.
Just listen to yourself, appears as though you’ve been travelling on the ‘ship of fools’ all your life. What do you actually do when things go wrong ?
Oh the ‘horror’ (M.Brando)

If we keep working you over in this manner, inadvertently you will release many of the names and or videos of your secret waves, its how it goes, its about proving to us you do know a bit about the caper, you can’t reinvent human nature.

If you’re up for a geology lesson for the whole region we are all having a ball at discussing, give me a tingle, it might help you locate Supafreaks mystery spots.
You may be surprised to know what many of the islands in Wallacea and Barusa actually do and how they connect or don’t connect to land masses in a submarine way.
Always good to talk , John.

And yes, a year ago I was the first to ascertain where Supas wave was, it took a minute, it’s not always about the wave, coconut palms and island vegetation . A little hint pal, ocean currents drive the planet in all its contexts, plant and animal evolution and distribution, meteorological conditions both upper and lower parts of the atmosphere, but geology tells us about something of the past as well as the present, you obviously don’t know much about that field.
All the best John, carry on with your comedy.
It’s highly entertaining.

You’ve got homework I see, painstakingly trying to work out where Supas wave is, must be eating you up inside.

How’s the uptake of paying customers going, just asking for a friend ? AW

"C - grade" waves, huh?

I am beginning to think you don't know anything about surfing or international surfing locations at all.

Keep in mind NO ONE had ever surfed here before - I did not "hear about it" from anyone, going here was the result of original research.

JC the video you posted in my opinion is B grade at best with some C grade waves also . We are talking about Indonesia so A grade is somewhere like Macaroni’s , Greenbush , Lances right . When I did a bit of a blog on my second time to the left that you can’t identify, I rated it as B grade with A grade days when conditions all perfectly lined up . Keep dancing to the beat of your own drum, when does your expedition kick off ? Times a ticking.
