G land dos and donts

don't straighten out, lose the 6'3 and take another 6'8

use your 1L allowance for a very high proof alcohol, for disinfecting cuts and abrasions, pass it round on the last night if you get through unscathed.

I get the feeling this won’t apply to you but if you class yourself as any type of social media “influencer” and plan on promoting the place to enhance your “brand” then cancel your booking, stay home and have a long hard think about things.
Apart from that, don’t surf speedies at low tide.

Not G.Land but still Applies
thought this was Good...https://wavepark.com/blog/mentawai-surfing-etiquette/
And make Surf your Travel ins covers you to be Medivac out .

^ ha, that's an excellent read, @udo!
love the 95/4/1 breakdown.

Yep. Have good travel insurance. A mate of mine had to get choppered out a few years back.

Someone from here, last year, surfed solo low tide (not sure what section)
Knocked himself out headfirst into reef.
Came to coughing water, couldn’t feel or use arms.
Somehow made it back across the reef.
Medivacced to Bali. They wanted to fuse most of his neck. Luckily waited until he got to Australia and the surgeons here said thank god he didn’t get the operation and he’s rehabbed conservatively.

G-land is a special place to me. I'm sure you can easily find out the little tip's such as where the keyhole is, what camp has the best coffee, other breaks around the area, best tides and all that with a little research. If you are going there you are most likely keenly aware of etiquette. But there are areas of etiquette that either aren't used or may be considered a grey area. G-land is all about the paddle, endless paddling sometimes, not just after catching a wave but also trying to put yourself in position to get one, with the takeoff zone changing with tide and swell direction. A crowd of frothers, inconsistent sets and waves always looking more consistent up the point can cause frustration. But what is more frustrating is when you have been waiting and a boat load of guys get dropped off out front of you and they go and sit just outside of you and deeper. Don't be those guys! Don't be the guy who paddles past someone else and then drops anchor 20 feet on their inside. But here lies the grey area. how far is far enough so you aren't considered a back paddler? 50 meters? 100 meters? It can be a real problem at any of the G-land sections. I suggest just put in the work and paddle farther up the point so that you kind of feel alone, unless you are one of those guys who likes to drop anchor and take your chances waiting with the pack. Also G-land is all about being in the zone, sometimes you will catch 2-3 in a row and be oozing stoke, embrace it (even if someone who has dropped anchor calls you a greedy cunt), because it will not last. You may be in the zone for an hour thinking you got the break wired but just as quickly you lose the zone and are sitting out there or chasing ghosts for 2 hours wondering what the fuck happened. It happens to everyone, everyone! The best thing you can do to maximize waves is yell go to the guys down the line from you if a wave is not letting you in or is passing you by. If everyone did this all our wave counts would go up. Also, and this rarely happens, be the eyes of someone paddling for a wave. The paddler is focused on what is going on down the line, often someone else will take off much deeper, let that paddler know if the guy riding is going to make it or not. Hopefully he will return the favor. Everyone benefits from this type of communication in more waves and fewer drop-ins. Looks like it may be a bit out of control on the 18-19th. Have a great trip!

Great comments Esco. It’s a special place.

X 2.
Have a great trip u.d.u
Make sure you report back with how you went.

Yep very special place.
Only thing that would make it better is if it was a right! :)

All this Talk of G.Land
What a TShirt

farkinell @udo ^
while I agree with @cd's advice @Underdu, particularly given the forecast, PMcC was rocking 5'6"..

Great post Esco, nailed it.

Your board sizes should cover you. First swell will be pretty wild, possibly too big, and while the direction is great for Speedies the tides are less than ideal. Might be able to have a shot at it earlier in the mornings if the trades blow all night. Start playing it safe down there once the tide gets to 1.8 and really question your decision, and your skill level, at 1.6.
Reckon you'll probably be spending more time up at Moneytrees, though it'll be serious in its own way. Eat well, drink lots of water, have long sessions but take your time, watch other surfers, watch the waves, take a bunch of longer leggies, know your 'happy place' for when you inevitably get caught inside, and also know that the current will always push you down the point and away from the energy.
Choose waves well during low tide sessions and play it a bit safer till your knowledge bank builds.
If you've surfed for any length of time you'll soon see patterns to the wave. Store that info away, but at the same time be aware that G-Land is a vastly complex series of sections and small shifts in swell direction, size, tide, whatever, can add a new layer of uncertainty. The learning never ends.
I'm gonna be over there from the 19th, trying to follow my own advice.

Good luck, gents.

One thing I have picked up on the trips I have done to G-land is that the late arvo session can be very quiet.
People are surfed out and chilling with beers watching the sunset.
Always seems to be a lower tide so not relevant for speedies, but have had some great sessions coming in on dark with only a few out.

GRAJAGAN DESCENDING
(middway between speedies and moneys.. two figures approach each other from each camp..)
Stu: Gerrday maayte, you 'Downunder'?
Downunder: hei, Stu bro! nice to see you bro! (looks up) oh look! me other bros just jumped..
(Stu shields his eyes and looks skyward)
Stu: Faark me.. what the..?
(Downunder is running off down the beach, arms in the air, toward the first landed of a string of 10 parachuters)
Stu: Stone the crows ..
Downunder (distant): told you some of me bros would be dropping in.. they're all Tāhuna lads pulling a Mcgiv'iv'wray,.. haha!
Ghost of Larry (mumbled): fuck me, if I didn't head off at the right time..

Thoughts and prayers.

maybe they'll bring descent coffee ?
(merk.. sic and loose, for you IB..)

Haha, the NZ-AUS beer and coffee wars!

fin experiment update, @IB? did you run it today?
any thoughts on @udo's 'loose' advice?

Check the DS thread, basesix.
Two days of very solid inner point. 8'6 DS twin yesterday - overgunned but fast and fun. 6'10 DS twin/trailer today, fast down the line, but didn't like going hard off the bottom.
Both days total bonuses, as could have been shite but was super fun and empty.
Now looking forward to 8'0 Keogh on Indo walls. Wish I could somehow combine Bali holiday with wife and G-Land surfing.

Joyos has yoga classes and a cafe apparently.
Start the big sell there.

Hahaha!
I've subjected her to 2x6 weeks at Lakey in one year, but I reckon those days are gone. G-Land may be a bridge too far.

This is the way.
Have a great time, mate

Whats going in the Boardbag Stuart
A Nettle Red Pyzel ?

Eh? Dunno how you do this Udo. Like you got my phone bugged.
Not sure if Corey can come through with it in time, but bottom end is a 6'4" Stretch - a 7'4" hiding in a 6'4" frame - and top end is a 7'0" Outer Island flex tail.
If Corey and Matt come through then the Pyzel will be in the middle.

You mentioned the new Pyzel the otherday
Nice Quiver
I just saw Bobbys Stock Longbottom Guns .

Low tides , take booties long walks out and back, some parts of reef are very sharp
Nothing ruins a trip to the jungle like cut / infected tootsies

I could never get used to booties- even the folding ones Stu recommended to me last trip.
Ended up selling them to a bloke.
Nice, long deliberate walk in, the walk out through the keyhole is worse.
