• Photographer Federico Vanno is no stranger to the Mentawai Islands. A veteran boat guide and photographer/videographer for over a decade, he thought he’d seen it all. “But this was like nothing I had ever seen”, says Federico of his recent trip to the island chain. “I mean, the few surfers that were out here this week were all world-class, just ripping all these empty lineups better than they have ever been ridden. It was intimidating”.

Nowhere on Earth was the privilege of being a professional surfer more on display. With the best Indonesian season in a decade lighting up everything on offer from Nias to Sumba, the images of empty dream surf with just a handful of lucky lockdown guys in the water proved a siren’s call too strong to ignore for the elite. The moment 'essential visas' were made available, escape plans were hatched. And the knife was really twisted when images of Kelly Slater and Strider Wasilewski’s fantasy Bali vacation began popping up. Then the rumours of Griffin, Kolohe, and the ...lost crew tearing around the Mentawai in a boat they were thinking of buying - or maybe it was a resort? Either way, the mouths of a globe-full of lockdowned surfers were watering just with the thought of it.

Federico Vanno, by secret invitation, was spirited away from Bali for yet another exclusive Mentawai lockdown charter. He arrived to find out he was to sail with an all star crew that consisted of Hawaiians, Californians, and two of the finest Indonesian surfers the country had to offer - and those two were brothers no less.

Here is a sneak peek of some of the photos from this week that Vanno was able to surreptitiously send out from the deck of their charter whenever the sporadic internet was working. “Being one hundred miles off the coast of West Sumatra comes with its headaches”, Vanno laughs, “but photographing the best surfers in the world in empty perfect surf is not one of them!”

    Empty HTs

“Pulling up to empty line-ups like this, with set after pumping set rolling through with absolutely no one out was enough to make anybody dizzy. The Indonesian Captain of the boat said we were like teenage boys with too many girls around to talk to”.

  •

    Rio Waida

"You might remember him at the Keramas WCT beating then-world champ Gabriel Medina. Taking his training seriously, he has put on a lot of muscle and his surfing shows it. Good, solid surfing. Really anchored to his board. This was a new spot that didn’t even have a name and this was Rio’s first ride from way outside”.

  •

    Griffin Colapinto

“We could see Griffin pulling these massive airs from a half kilometre away as we pulled into Lances Rights. It was like he was on a trampoline. The San Clemente crew were already there on their boat. It was a photographer's dream to pull into the keyhole in that afternoon light and shoot surfing like this. I didn’t want to poach their trip so I just shot a few frames. This is one of the best. I am hoping these guys drop all their shots soon so I can show you the rest”.

  •

    Rio Waida

"This is another new spot that we named Highways because it was so fast. On the big days, Rio Waida was in powerful form. All that Desert Point training allowed him to hit the high corners where most would be setting up the barrel."

  •

    Zeke Lau

“Zeke was sporting what he called his 'lockdown tan'. He brought a lot of power to the proceedings. You could actually hear his surfing from the boat. I had to be careful shooting too close to him in the water. If he ever ran over you, you would get chopped in half”.

  •

    Seth Moniz

“The weather was so beautiful, the clouds, the winds, but on the first day Seth surfed so long that he badly sunburned the back of his neck. Unable to leave the perfect conditions, he found another way to keep surfing”.

  •

    Parker Coffin

“Parker was working on his lip slides. I mean it really looked impossible. He would slide for a good six feet before jamming it back down into the deep end, like a skater in a bowl working the coping. When I make the video I am thinking of using skateboarding sounds on his waves”.

  •

    Barron Mamiya

“On any day, one surfer would stand out from the rest. On this rainy day at Macaronis it was Barron Mamiya. He hit a groove for about two hours that was just insane - totally in sync and masterful. With each wave he could hear the boys on the boat hooting and cheering. That was the best thing about this very rare boat trip. In a world that is experiencing such divisions and chaos…well…I mean, as isolated as this trip was, a real deep sense of camaraderie was formed between surfers from such different backgrounds. The way the world should be in these hard times. Our own little United Nations”.

Surprised no one has commented on this as has been up a while i kind of resisted yesterday as didn't want to be negative.

But in theory an article on empty Mentawai's should make you froth, it's the thing of dreams.

So why doesn't it?

The pics are technically really good from a photography perspective,(how's the clouds) but the only pic that makes you froth to be there is the empty HT's pic, all the other pics are just too zoomed in and focussed more on the surfing rather than the wave, if it really was empty we would have much rather seen pulled back line up shots of empty Maccas or HT's etc (or even the odd drone lineup shot) pics that make us want to be there.

And please can we drop this "new spot" or "we named this wave" stuff, pretty much every rideable reef in the Mentawai's has been named and ridden, anyway if it's empty Mentawai's you wouldn't be surfing those waves, you would be trying to make the most of surfing the normally crowded spots that are now empty.

Yep. In the ments the waves are the hero's. Line up and pulled back shots are what we most want to see.

How come no one else can leave their country and these guys get the world on a plate?

I loved the shots. Seth's with the cloud-wave and Rio looking like is dropping in to a bowl. Cheers
