Hi, My wife & I are off to the southern Maldives in end of April 2018 & are staying at the Shangri-La resort on Villingili (got a great deal on luxury escapes). I am hoping to surf some of the different breaks in the area. Has anyone been to this area before & is it easy to hire a dhoni to get around? Any tips on the area would be appreciated!

Can't say I've heard too much at all about the surf down that far. But here's what I've found with quick google search. Have you surfed there before Booka, or at least heard about what waves are on offer?

There seems to be enough surf breaks on the atoll, but no idea what the wave quality is like?

This looks insanely fun however...........

Sorry I can't help you with your question.

Hi Don,
No this is the first time to the Maldives, I have done some research but only have a small window (6 days). Looks like will need a boat if conditions are onshore at the 2 breaks I should be able to access from land. I’m at the end of what the websites say is peak season down there so fingers crossed. Ended up here because paying to surf in the northern Maldives rubs me up the wrong way, go forward and forge your own path middle aged man they said....

Access is difficult & the winds were generally strong making shangri-la the only ridable break during the time I was there (possibly approach lights) unfortunately missed a large swell by a day due to wifey issues....may have lead to a divorce. That being said surfed shangri-la for 4 days straight between 1-3 ft with SE swell direction (SW would have been much better at this break). The wave is very shallow at lower tides & the resort told me I couldn't surf .......
