looking forward to the vicco updates this wednsday and friday, talk of a bombing low is somthing to get the blood pumping...
i can only remember of 2 others recently to be in a range to produce swell. the first of the 2 was maby 4 or 5 years ago it was the first bombing low to be names a hurricane in australia... i surfed bells 8ft+ with 15-20knt onshore sw wind on it, the second one was maby 2 years ago i think it bombed well south of W.A i surfed princetown it was easy 12-15 ft perfect ofshores but a little to big for the beach breack was closing out majoraty of the day but the swell was like a ruler comming in nice and lined up...its going to be very interesting to see what this low pressure system does for the swell in victoria, it looks alot closer than the last one but not tracking directly towards us, i just hope there is not too much west in the swell and enough s in the swell to get into the torquay area..... really looking forward to getting the big gun out and screaming down the line!!!!!

Speaking of Bombing lows though . The 1998 boxing day Syd- Hob killer was a doozy . Although i won't mention where i surfed . That thing just gathered strength as it span through the Strait . Was a fair SSE swell off teh back of it .

Yes like many other Victorians have seen those pages . Unfortunately this is not a Victorian only website ( as you may note , many comments in the Facebook section of Swellnet aren't in English ) . So with just a google search , what vicco's knew him as firstly a Footballer and secondarily a Surfer will be OUT there .

Anyway , " Kingcity " would have been more discrete . And its What Richard didn't write about that has my back up . Please be considerate .
Anyway bak to Bombing Lows and BELLs' forecasts .
Feedbak can be good , when its discreet .
Back on Bomb swells , either in 95 or 97 i believe a Port' , have ran out of dry 'land when a macking swell and storm surge combined with a Highish tide .
I beleive this had Carlo , calling that this town's Posse had to be evacuated .
Again that day i surfed a spot which is usually high and dry , under the nose of a Toll Booth .!

Goof' , maybe i should have said ; i surfed closer than you think , and under the nose of your region.
But to be to the point' , unlike Hoges character... " i don't wanna be the ' ... wanker !!!
whaaaaaatt is onto the " evacuation " .....
Shaun I'm hearing ya , its just Morris makes more cents .
where is your lovable better half !!!?
And the almost spot that RL far away from revealed , has been taken in other names
perhaps nearer to creek cove . But not for amnesia or even melanoma .
I'm sorry Goofy if i lose you , take what you like from it and throw the rest in The Hopper
, but to those that have an inkling then to ourselves we chuckle .

PS . Goof , it wasn't where i was thinking of surfing . it was where i did . and for all the talk this week , it would take something far more special to see those sights again . but maybe i have my eye where the Pig's lookin . though i reckon i won't have the time . so why everyone likes looking west , east can be a good option .

Craig, any opinion on today's possible "bombing low" off Sydney.

Sky News chief meteorologist Tom Saunders has indicated it is in an unusual position so close to the coast and either way will form into an ECL.

I do prefer to read expertise from the very best experts so it's over to you.

So for it to be classified as a 'bombing' low it has to drop 24hPa within a 24 hour period and we're only due to see it drop from 1007hPa to 987hPa (20hPa), so not quite enough.

It's also not an East Coast Low as it doesn't move parallel to the coast and isn't due to bring flooding rains, just steady, heavy falls. It is close to an ECL though.

So it's just a really intense Tasman Low.

It's weird positioning make it very tricky to forecast with just a slim fetch close to the coast. If it were as strong but a little further east we'd be seeing huge surf, but instead it'll just be large.

Thank you, nice and clear and makes sense.

I was wondering if a couple of articles on some of the more headline click focused news providers were a little off the mark.

So I forgot some semantics re the 'bombing' low classification.

Like I penned in this article here.. https://www.swellnet.com/news/swellnet-analysis/2018/01/09/developing-su...

The drop in pressure depends on latitude, and it's 24hPa at 60°S, and only needs to be 12hPa at 25°S.

So at Sydney's latitude of 33°S it only needs to drop 13-14hPa in the 24 hour period and will easily do this.

So it can be classified as a 'bombing' low.

Bombing low or ecl or just a low if it produces big good surf
thats all we need.

Too true, just keep your expectations a little tempered for tomorrow (could still be very large but looks a touch dicey) and focus from Thursday onwards.

So semantics and name calling aside (bombing low)

Your initial instincts said no to the bombing low due to an insufficient drop in pressure (explained/clarified above thanks) is that because these systems are usually found below 40°S ?
