Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 23rd September)

Best Days: Keen surfers South West magnets tomorrow morning, Thursday, Friday morning, Saturday, Sunday

Recap

Much cleaner and better surf across the South West Saturday to 4-6ft, 3-5ft Sunday morning ahead of a slight kick in size through the afternoon, smaller today.

Mandurah was a fun 2ft+ on Sunday, smaller 1-2ft yesterday and tiny today, while Perth was best Saturday.

This week and weekend (Sep 24 - 29)

The coming days will remain on the small side, tiny in Perth and Mandurah, but a morning E/NE-NE breeze tomorrow should favour the swell magnets in the South West with easing 3ft+ waves.

A lift in SW groundswell is expected on Wednesday but winds will go onshore out of the W/SW as a weak front moves through. Winds should revert back to the S/SE on Thursday morning in the South West, SE further north as a new long-period SW groundswell starts to build.

This swell started to be generated last night by a strong polar low developing around the Heard Island region, with a fetch of slow moving severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds being aimed through our swell window.

The low will continue east over the coming days, weakening south-west of us Wednesday morning, with the swell set to arrive through the morning Thursday and build to a large 10ft+ across the South West, easing from 8-10ft Friday morning.

Mandurah should reach 3ft+, 2-3ft in Perth, easing from a similar size Friday morning.

A ridge moving in Thursday afternoon should keep winds out of the S/SE into the afternoon, strong at times, with S/SW sea breezes to the north.

Friday looks excellent with E'ly offshores in the South West ahead of sea breezes, SE further north.

The swell will continue to ease into Saturday morning with a SE offshore, but later in the day a new long-period SW groundswell is due to fill in, peaking Sunday morning.

This will be generated by a secondary strong low forming on the back of the first, being a little shorter-lived but just as intense.

The swell is due later Saturday with a kick to 6-8ft likely before dark in the South West, peaking Sunday morning to 8-10ft, 3ft Mandurah and 2-3ft Perth.

A NE breeze will favour selected breaks on Sunday morning, onshore into Monday as the swell backs off.

Longer term there's plenty more activity on the cards for next week as a flurry of strong Southern Ocean storms fire up in our swell window. More on this Wednesday.
