Easing surf favouring the beaches, increased activity next week

Victoria Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 9th September)

Best Days: Beaches tomorrow and selected spots Friday, Saturday morning on the beaches, Monday through Thursday at least

Recap

A slow start to yesterday with clean conditions across the beaches at dawn, though quickly deteriorating. The Surf Coast was clean but tiny on the beaches early, better into the afternoon with a weak change and building swell to an inconsistent 2-3ft.

Today winds are onshore across all locations with a slow 2-3ft of swell on the Surf Coast, 3-5ft to the east.

This week and weekend (Sep 10 – 13)

We've got a mix of building W/SW swells today and we should see a peak in size this afternoon to a more solid though inconsistent 3ft on the Surf Coast swell magnets, 4-6ft to the east as winds remain moderate to fresh out of the S/SE.

Tomorrow is the pick for the beaches with the inconsistent mix of W/SW groundswell and mid-period energy due to ease from 2-3ft and 3-5ft respectively along with improving E/NE tending NE winds. With this the early might be a little lumpy and unorganised on the beaches but ironing out as the morning progresses.

We'll likely see winds tending variable early-mid afternoon ahead of late SE sea breezes.

Friday looks clean across selected spots with a fresher and possibly strong at times N-N/NE breeze but the swell will be smaller and lucky to be 1-2ft on the Surf Coast. The Mornington Peninsula should see a new pulse of inconsistent W/SW groundswell though, kicking back to 3ft during the day, if not a touch undersized early. Conditions will be a little wind affected though.

Saturday looks minimal with a new S/SW groundswell from a polar fetch of W'ly winds now looking unlikely with less favourable and weaker W/NW winds forecast to be aimed through our swell window.

A strengthening but south-east tracking low through our southern swell window Friday doesn’t look to generate any decent size either, with the Surf Coast due to remain around 1-2ft Saturday, 3ft to the east. Winds will look OK for the beaches early and out of the N'th, but a swing to the N/NW is due through the afternoon.

Come Sunday another very inconsistent, long-range W/SW groundswell is due to fill in, generated in the south-east Indian Ocean. The size of this swell isn't anything major and a peak is due into the afternoon, but a shallow change overnight Saturday looks to leave lingering onshore SW winds in any case.

Next week onwards (Sep 14 onwards)

The more promising developments into next week are on track, with a conveyer belt of polar frontal activity due to move in from the west over the weekend and through next week.

This will be linked to a drawn out node of the Long Wave Trough pushing in slowly from the west and just under us.

We'll see a bunch of strong polar fronts moving on top of each other, generating a moderate to large swell event from Monday through Thursday next week, likely peaking Tuesday/Wednesday. Size wise it looks to be in the range of 4-6ft across the Surf Coast and 6-8ft to the east, but more on this Friday.

Surely not enforcement. Looks like only a handful of people in the water.

Yep there are a lot more ppl pushing prams and shit in the car park. They simply need to fuck off from the surf beach. Still would not surf in them trash conditions. Sitting in the car park reading a book would be the better option

I'm not sure there is a more self-entitled person than you NWS? Why don't you take your own advice you gave in a previous thread and "simply tell people to fuck off"?

Or to grab another ripper quote from you "Maybe we should just nuke Melbourne". You can just replace Melbourne with "ppl pushing prams and shit in the car park" and then you can happily have the beach to yourself to suit your own agenda because apparently your needs are more important than others.

I happily had 2-3km of beach on my own for two days this week and last week. The only local still had the nerve to come near me after my sesh then he goes and surfs a closeout in front of the car park while the banks were going off down the beach. I just gave him the thumbs up and smiled no contact and shit talk needed. This is how I surf before the virus.

Stage 3 stage 4 it don't mean shit dan the dictator tries to implement new laws every week. I wear a mask most of the time I don't go near anyone and I stay home. Have not worked or gone to another person's house since April. The only thing I whine about is crowded waves while most people cry about not being able to exercise or all these new restrictions that will change you're business for ever. Anyway keep doing what you're doing guys the new world you are creating suits one of my personalities well

Social distancing i'd say. No shark alarm just hovering in one spot with the camera out. The cops need to come down and crack down on all the people exercising in the surfbeach car parks.

I'm sitting in my car on my own with mask on. Without going into detail I am a lot safer from the virus out here in my car compared to being stuck in a share house with multiple randoms walking in and out of the house daily. Meh I will go home and sit in my room from 1pm -11pm not interested in working during this time of crisis

Fair enough. Try not to get cabin fever.....maybe you could have a nice walk along the beach later - when everyone else is locked up at home where they should be.

Yep seemed good all morning and really did continue to pump through high tide late arvo. Anyway i better get used to surfing down there on my own then. Pretty earyrie being the only one on the beach in the middle of nowhere. Dunno why more ppl from Torquay are not doing the solo sesh. I'd rather be surfing with 2-3 blokes from Torquay then on my own down ther

If I had the power of dan the dictator I'd start thinking about creating bubbles to protect regional areas from the city dogs. Like if ur in the Melbourne bubble you can travel interstate from city to city like melbourne-sydney-canberra. Regional crew not aloud in the city bubble but maybe let them travel to regional nsw. No international travel untill we figure out if it's viable to do the bubble thing. This might go on for years

You might find that our dumbass goverment might do that if sydney/Brisbane starts getting 50 cases a day in their city's next year. Victorian goverment already fked up big time. Can't blame dan for the things he is doing now, he is just the puppet. Another cuck will replace him soon anway. When I think about it we have already started doing this bubble bs bunch of victorian footy players in Queensland atm also vicco pro surfers about to compete in nsw

NorthWestSouth's picture
NorthWestSouth's picture
NorthWestSouth Thursday, 10 Sep 2020 at 8:00pm

I figured someone would say that, you're right though. If regional victoria stays isolated from Melbourne and china i wonder how many business's on the great ocean road will survive? there will never be enough population in western/central vic to support them all. Think surf school's would have to be the last on the list to reopen kinda fked when you think about how many surf school's are in Torquay.
