South Australian Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 1st January)

Best Days: Both coasts tomorrow morning and Friday

Recap

Happy New Year! We saw bumpy 2-3ft waves on the Mid Coast yesterday best in the morning and poor into the afternoon, while the South Coast was very average with fresh and gusty onshore winds.

Today is much better across all locations with a mid-period W/SW swell to 2-3ft on the Mid Coast and 3ft down South with great morning offshore winds.

This week and weekend (Jan 1 – 5)

The surf will drop back a little in size and strength tomorrow, but a cold front currently moving in from the west will produce some reinforcing W/SW swell coming in around 2ft on the Mid Coast, and sets to 3ft between Day St and Goolwa down South.

Winds tomorrow morning won't be as favourable for the South Coast, but workable and out of the E/NE, clean on the Mid Coast before sea breezes kick in.

Friday looks cleaner down South with a moderate to fresh NE-N/NE tending variable wind and easing small 2ft+ sets off Middleton, back to 1ft to occasionally 2ft on the Mid Coast on the favourable parts of the tide.

A strong overnight change Friday will bring poor conditions and a weak windswell wave to both coasts Saturday along with strong S/SW winds.

Sunday will become cleaner on the Mid Coast, but with no decent swell under a S/SE breeze.

Longer term, the models are toying with Tropical Cyclone Calvinia which is east of Madagascar, drifting south-east and being absorbed into the westerly storm track and deepening as a strong low south-west of us early next week. This could generate a good SW groundswell for mid-late week, but GFS isn't liking it as much as ECMWF. Therefore check back here Friday for more details on next week.

Fair bit of push and size west of Victor today. Consistent too (which made paddling back out a nightmare at times).
