Best Days: Sunday morning south facing beaches, Monday, Wednesday

Recap

A strong pulse of E'ly groundswell offered easy 4ft sets across open beaches yesterday, but S/SE winds created poor conditions at all but the most protected spots. Today the swells was smaller and easing from 2ft or so but much cleaner.

This weekend and next week (Sep 5 - 11)

The coming period will consistent of S'ly and then S/SE pulses from weak polar frontal activity through our southern swell window.

Firstly tomorrow, a weak change pushing up the coast isn't due to produce any major size, but a trailing fetch of strong S/SW winds further south should produce an afternoon kick in S'ly swell to 2-3ft across south facing beaches, easing out of the S/SE from 2-3ft Sunday morning.

Winds however are an issue with a fresh W'ly tomorrow morning before the swell arrives, swinging S'ly mid-late morning, creating poor conditions. Sunday will then see early N'ly winds, quickly freshening from the NE through the day and becoming stronger into the afternoon.

This NE wind will be associated with a strong and broad fetch of N/NE winds developing in our swell window overnight, producing a building N/NE windswell that's due to peak early Monday to 3-4ft across north-east facing beaches, easing rapidly through the day as winds swing to the W/NW.

Come Tuesday there's no decent swell due with a small background SE swell and weak tiny increase in S'ly windswell for the afternoon.

Of greater importance is a small and inconsistent but strong S/SE groundswell due on Wednesday. This will be generated by a polar fetch of strengthen S/SE gales to the south of New Zealand through Sunday.

South swell magnets are due to pick up infrequent 3ft sets at this stage with slight offshore tending variable winds, but we'll confirm this on Monday. Longer term there's nothing too major on the cards but we'll have a closer look at this in the next update. Have a great weekend!
