Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Thursday 7th July)

Best Days: Friday afternoon through to the end of next week

This week and next (Jul 8 - 15)

Fading surf should be seen through today with small leftovers tomorrow morning. Into the afternoon a new inconsistent long-range S/SW groundswell is due, with swell magnets due to reach 4-5ft. This swell performed well across the South West and should hold a similar size through Saturday.

Sunday is likely to be a similar size, with our models picking up additional size, but I'm not quite aware where this was from, so if there's some bigger sets be pleasantly surprised.

E/SE trades are due to kick up this afternoon and persist tomorrow (variable early) while funky variable winds from an active monsoon trough will then be seen from Saturday into next week.

Our funky S'ly groundswell event is still on the cards but looking a bit weaker.

Currently a small strong front is projecting towards WA and this will itself produce a new S/SW groundswell for later Sunday and more so Monday morning. A consistent 6ft+ S/SW swell is due across exposed breaks, smaller inside the Bukit, while a secondary pulse of mid-period S'ly swell energy is due through the day.

This will be generated by a broad but weak fetch of S'ly winds projecting north off WA's West Coast, and should see 6-8ft sets across south facing breaks, easing back into Tuesday.

One final pulse of inconsistent S'ly groundswell is due Tuesday afternoon, produced by a stronger fetch of S'ly gales off the south west of WA, more in Java's swell window.

Exposed breaks should persist around 6ft to occasionally 8ft Tuesday, much smaller in protected breaks on the Bukit and also east of Lombok, easing back quickly through Wednesday.

The easing trend should be arrested through Thursday by a very inconsistent long-range S/SW groundswell that's currently being generated on the polar shelf, west of Heard Island.

A tight fetch of severe-gale to storm-force winds will produce a decent but very infrequent swell, with it due to arrive later Wednesday and peak Thursday to 4-6ft at swell magnets, easing later in the day and further into next weekend.

Longer term indications are for a good SW groundswell for next week, followed by a larger pulse Tuesday/Wednesday but more on this next update.

I hate to burst your bubble but ulus is a massive 1-2ft right now
not 3-4ft overhead. Hoping for some increase tomorrow Friday.

Our forecast is for exposed breaks (ie more on the southern exposed breaks), not Ulus (even though it is labelled that).

Ulus will be much smaller than the forecasts written above, especially on the southerly swells.
