Round 1 at Pipe

The Pipe Masters got underway today. Nine heats were held in slightly unorganised six foot waves, the wind spinning around the clock before settling in from the west and halting proceedings.

Of the title contenders, JJF advanced while Gabs was relegated to Round 2. Of course there are a couple of outside contenders and of those Jordy easily progressed, in fact he got the highest heat total of the day, while Julian Wilson had a brain explosion and scored a priority interference and finds himself in Round 2.

The surf is expected to drop further tomorrow, and with a suspect wind forecast we may be looking at a layday, while an XL swell is forecast for the following day plus at least one more till it settles again.

Mig Pupo dropped into this wave, a 9.93 which was the highest of the day, and then played the waiting game as Gabs and Benji Brand exchanged the lead. Mig backed it up on his very last wave and sent title-contender Gabs to Round 2.

The other World Title contender - putting aside the rank outsiders for the moment - had an easy win over Wiggolly and Dusty Payne and skips to Round 3.

Despite winning at Sunset, Connor Coffin didn't make the Top 10 on the QS and he's sitting at 21st on the CT, which makes him a bona fide bubble boy. Coffin needs a big result at Pipe. In Round 1 he faced off against an injured Stu Kennedy, a careless Julian Wilson (chalked up an interference), but also controlled his own destiny with big end section turns like this.

Filipe Toledo's heat was the last before the comp was called off due to the sou-westerly. Both Toledo and Bourez scored 2.00 points on the back of wind affected closeouts, while heat winner Lau found the exits.

By his own admission, Kelly Slater was surfing at 65%. He took a light-footed approach, relying on experience and a touch of gamesmanship rather than explosive surfing.

On this wave Julian Wilson dropped in on Stu Kennedy and it was hard to explain why. Kennedy had priority, Wilson had a clear read on the wave, and yet he went anyway. Jules' already difficult shot at the title just got harder.

Josh Kerr is one of the few surfers who can't requalify even if they win the contest, which is a pointless bit of trivia anyway as he's already announced his retirement. It does, however, lend itself to some pressure-free comp surfing. Kerr easily advanced over Wright and Igarishi.

Watched the first couple of heats. Kerrzy got fully robbed on his scores. Spat out of at least 3 drainers and his best score was a 6.5? His better wave scored scored a 5.67?? Fully pitted and came out after the spit. If that was a heat with Jordy or John it would have been a couple of 8+ rides easily. Go Kerrzy. Hope ya win your last CT mate. You deserve it. Put style back into the judging criteria.

Had to zoom in on Slater's photo. Looks like he has hair but it's the shadow of the lip. Nice timing.

How was J Wilson channeling TC out there (blatant drop in no regard for others safety) . Kennedy had a pretty good line for the wave. Julian didn't even look. I really like watching the interferences . Surfing went up to another level after that.
Interesting to see if they run today
Even the commentary says it's not proper pipe...... One big West swell is all they need to make the title lol !

Hmm safety??? I'm pretty sure Jules didn't mean to screw up his title chance!
And do you really think stu was yelling mine mine in a comp when he could possibly advance with a easy interference?
Think about it for a second or two!
But I think the judges where saying something to Julie!

Surf like you did after your inter
. And we might award you your world title one day..

TC lost a world title paddling for a wave(without priority)............just pointing out the similarities thirty something years later.
The interference raised the performance after though...... J Wilson was fired up......

Also I have to say I would love to have a crack at pipe/backdoor on these north broken swells.

Looks just like a epic beachy e/ne day at manly or the gong...

I'm thinking that whole stretch would look like this.. In these conditions.. Haven't been there though but looks spot on my peak mangement leavel for a place like that!!!

Ie: Not real Pipe!

Pipe doesn't even break on a north swell , it gets this really funky rip running through it and the swell is actually diverted/ refracted else where. Backdoor becomes longer almost breaking like a point. Backdoor is super shallow, shallower than most people under stand .

Forgive me Mr lank for when I say "Pipe" on a north swell.. I mean the right that comes of the reef that pipe might be breaking left if the swell had west in it...

Same same but different from Right? Or is that to left wing???
Oh I don't know anymore Lanky I'm just going to surf off the wall in the pipeline master's and backdoor pipe!

Now I'm confused let's just surf the beach break at pipeline..

Plenty of action with the four man heat format and plenty of clean barrels, good move by WSL and maybe its how they should run all contests.......always something going on,no wasted waves and its pretty exciting.

Yeah I like it. If there was just one heat in the water a lot of the little barrels would be going unridden but they're scrapping for anything. Suited Medina pretty well.
