Watch: Slater and groms in Texas

Two 13-year olds, Jackson Dorian and Erin Brooks, are joined by a sprightly 48-year old for an improbable pool session.

Despite images being scattered across Instagram, I'm still not sure what the purpose of Kely Slater's visit to BSR Wave Pool in Texas was.

It'd be easy to say that there's no reason, he did it for fun, but any Slater Watcher would know that's simply not true; the ever-calculating 11-time champ is always working the angles.

The Slater footy starts at 6:30.

Apologies, Zen.

The interest in having Slater in an opposing pool with two surfers 35 years his junior outweighs the shoddy editing and liberal use of slo-mo, but only just.

I probably should have mentioned that.

Or to put it another way Stu, you could have said:- "This is probably the lamest video we've ever posted on Swellnet but, if you really must watch it, you'll never get those 9 minutes back."

One of those times I'm glad I read the comments first. Thanks for the heads up fellas.
FWIW, you don't see a wave ridden until 1 min 10. I don't know what happened past the 2 minute mark....

Imagine if they didn't use so much slow-mo. Would have only wasted 4 minutes.

Interesting Slater would leave the relatively safe confines of Aust and head to Texas where there are nearly 350 000 cases of Covid

This pool is a better design than Slater's I reckon. More like an ocean wave.
I wonder why the water is so cloudy.

I'll take a stab. I'm guessing the water contains large amounts of Urea, Chloride, Sodium and Potassium.

Yeah, but why would they treat the water with those chemicals? Plenty of pools have nice clear water that stays clean.

I don't know, seems there is plenty of asides interest in there if watched with little expectations thanks to the prior warnings...
All filler for a couple minutes of family poolside shit. A fair chunk of kids with big dreams and hype doing their version of surf/skate like we did as kids without the injuries from a ramp or bowl and then Kelly for a bit of traditional (for him) surfing like I would imagine most of us would like to be able to do.
Don't you reckon it would have been sick to be able to practice your moves without hesitation like the kids can? Like I said, we had to try our supposed 'big' moves on a skatey with many stacks like they are having in the pool without the consequences, more fun no doubt. Or when we did try things in the surf it was on an ocean wave without any consistency compared to the continuous breaking form of the pool.
Their approaches are so different as the Kids skate for the end section only whereas Kelly surfs the wave in a more linked manner.
What was also interesting to me was seeing full clips of how many times the Kids blow waves on the one big move attempt, time and time again. I guess repetition makes for an eventual outcome but leaves the viewer bemused, as noted above.
Kind of reminds the casual observer how edited surf clips are rarely a true indication of what we see of our local rippers going through the ups and downs during a real surf in the ocean with many others involved.
But yes, I agree, a very average clip of surfing.

Has Slater left OZ now ? Do all the worlds travel restrictions not count for the Goat or did he just paddle home on a big swell ?

I enjoyed it. Good to study the goats pop up technique in slow mo. If I was one of those lucky little shits watching that back I would kick myself for over-amping and doing too many little booster turns instead of timing it better. Slater is just text book class and style in all conditions. He just fucken loves every wave.

That first 2 minutes of some no name punters sitting by the pool was riveting viewing.....

I turned it off after about the 6th blown air attempt.

PS looks fun to me. Nice to have it all to yourself. I reckon wave garden is the better tech at this point in time but this a very close second.

26th June 2018 : Waco is Team USA Olympic Wave Pool.
https://www.usasurfing.org/usa-surfing-news/bsr-surf-resorts-waco-wave-p...

10th July 2020 - 4 WSL Pro's vote in a 'New Olympic Coach' (Brett Simpson).
https://www.usasurfing.org/usa-surfing-news/two-time-us-open-winner-bret...
Fellow WSL Pro Slater never nominated for a certain Olympic Coaching Medal.

That is massive news in itself...so what does Kelly know that we don't?
Why is he talking up his chances of qualifying as injury wildcard for Team USA?

Stu is on the money again...Kelly does have a valid reason to be in that pool.

ABC news - Slater, being very serious...'I'm not ruling out surfing in 2021 Olympics.'
Then reels off when JJF & Kolohe have been injured, come the Olympics he's ready.

ISA- Eligibility & Nomination Requirements "Olympic Surfing Event-Tokyo 2020"

Surfer must make themselves available + accept nomination from NF for ISA.
Did National Federation invite JJF to represent them at ISA + did he decline?
If a surfer declines, then NF must then nominate the next surfer > Olympic Events.

When a surfer is injured...(Panel decides...)

2019 Injured JJF has miraculous recovery to qualify under WSL rebel Hawaiian Flag.
Obvious to all, is that Hawaii is not JJF's USA National Federation or Olympic Nation!

IOC Olympian's must Lockdown, as injured Olympian JJF is surfing rebel Wave Pool!
Panel will question qualification of a Surfer who steps out of line where they see fit?

Olympic Cycle commenced July 1, 2018 (ended) June 8, 2020.

Q: When, if ever did JJF surf for USA National Federation during Olympic time cycle?
A: WSL Hawaiian surfer Carissa Moore has surfed for USA NF in ISA but not so JJF.
Better get a Lawyer Son...better get a real good one!

July 2020: Kelly feels right at home surfing in his new Team USA Olympic Wave Pool.

Vimeo sucks dick!
I've never once watched a whole clip on Vimeo. I can stream videos on countless other platforms seamlessly. But not in Vimeo. Pointless.

I suspect the GOAT's back in the US testing boards (like he was around here when in Oz) ... interesting 'concave deck' board in this video of him that was posted only a few days ago:

Slater on opening wave, then again around the 8:10 mark

Terminal's picture
Terminal Wednesday, 22 Jul 2020 at 6:24pm

Yeah he's been mucking around with concave decks since his days with CI. Deep doubles under the front foot. I reckon the idea has merit, something to hook your foot into through turns. I think my next custom, I'm going to get a deep double under my back foot, once had an amazing fish I rode to extinction and the tail sunk severely making an almost perfect double concave in the deck, I actually found the board felt better at that stage than prior to it sinking.
