heading to Bali over the easter break so late march/early april for 10 days with the family.

looking for suggestions on where to head?

prefer rights, intermediate skills, have done a ments boat trip last year.

keen on some barrels but not looking for anything too hectic. prob prefer less crowds more than anything and need to keep the fam (mrs and 2 x boys 5 & 4) happy too.

suggestions appreciated

cheers

General rule of thumb: east from Ulus = mainly rights; west from Ulus = mainly lefts; west from Kuta/Legian = mainly beachbreaks or slower, more forgiving left points/rivermouths.

Late March/early April is around the start of the dry season which means increasing chances of trade winds (best for the Bukit). But you'll usually get light winds for a decent period everywhere else.

I'd recommend staying west from Legian (fun beachies if the swell is small/medium sized) and then teeing up early morning missions to the east coast when the swell's strong to surf some of the right hand reefs.

Waterbomb Park in Kuta for the kids.
Also from what I’ve seen (I don’t have kids) the Balinese love children. Always friendly towards them and cracking jokes, playing games.

stayed at mulia resort in late oct/early nov in nusa dua. try get a deal otherwise its a bit pricy but it was absolutely perfect family holiday. few rights close by and if you feel you must go to ulus its only a 20-30 min taxi.

We stayed right at the south end of kuta at the holiday Inn at the end of our last family trip to Bali. Right on the beach front with walk /bike path along the beachfront up to kuta /legian, close to waterbomb park also and right out front a short boat ride or longer paddle to surf kuta and airport reefs and even waves for kids on the right tide at south kuta. Nice pool, sandy beach with safe swimming, good breakfast and range of prices depending on room and what degree of luxury you need or can afford.

Great suggestion , Campbell.

Whilst maybe not for those that hate Kuta , there is a lot to be said for dad being able to bolt out to the Kuta reefs ( mostly average , sometimes amazing , mostly crowded , sometimes un crowded ) . Stay as close to the water as possible near discovery and dad can get opportunistic when wind / swell / tide / family windows present themselves.

Your lady has the shops at her disposal and it’s all cool and safe for her to do a bit of opportunistic browsing whilst the kids hit the pool or the beachies with dad. Dad can hit the piss whilst the kids are in the pool . The whole family can hit water bom or the cinemas up at beach walk.

Busy but exciting . Energetic but too hectic for some.

The surf can be crazy busy but there are GOOD waves to be had around the general area if you’re lucky. Not Desert point good but pretty fucking good at some spots at the right time.

You can head in any direction and you’re centrally located for West/ East missions.

PS If your lady does head to Discovery shopping mall and you’re dragged along against your will then you’ll find that the Hurley shop has surf movies on loop in their front window. There’s a bench right in front of the shop .I’ve seen that movie many times through sunburned , bloodshot eyes after surfing myself stupid. Good people watching also.

People either love or hate Bali. Kuta is not outback Indo. Best to think of it as a cool little city with great food , people and waves.

It used to be downtown central kuta hell but now ulus is vying for that title. Nearly everywhere in bali now has a nightclub and a yoga studio on the beach and the surf is crowded (well there are some exceptions if you really know when and we're to go) a half decent surf at one of those reefs is as good or maybe better than peaky 3-4 ft ulus again or dirty canguu battling it out with the eurotrash

easter this time last year I stayed in Seminyak before heading to bukit then sumbawa and had a excellent run of waves. The beaches north of Seminyak being a stand out session. Not sure if it was swell direction or banks at the time but was good!
