thermalben, 1427850827

Well, I suppose that's just the style - more like football than say, tennis or cricket.

I did notice the revamped theme music this morning too.. very strange.

carpetman, 1427854707

How many times do we need to be told that these are the best surfers in the world?

mk1, 1427855005

Turpel gets me on edge. Something about the buzz of his voice.

saltyone, 1427859643

Carpetman- seems like every 20 mins;)..as if there aren't plenty of amazing surfers in the world that don't compete!
mk1, I hear you… its irritating for sure. He just needs to back it off a notch. Im sure he's a nice bloke but yeah they all need to just shut up a bit more and watch the surfing and let those beautiful silent moments of wave riding speak for themselves,..let us join the dots, instead of ramming it down our throats!! ..Could even let us hear the ocean that would be nice..
Thermalben, gah! you're linking surfing to football!! its the end!! ;)

floyd, 1427876354

There is only so many ways you can describe a shit sandwich .....

norchock, 1427885319

Ronnie does well ross too,any live commentry takes a certain type of person...ones that never shut up

Thanks erikb!

staitey, 1428057195

agreed to the above: I think Turpel could potentially leave out the terms, ''he takes off'' and ''bottom turn''…….think we've got that covered. Also since when did ''tail high'' become part of surfing vernacular?

staitey, 1428057349

PS - I've thought this for sometime now but does anyone else feel that some of the top women get massively over scored? Check Sally Fitz's 8.70 against Silvana Lima. 2 turns, first reasonable, second pretty stock………I don't get it. I think Silvan would have to feel a little ripped off with that result. I'm a a big fan of the likes of Sally, Steph, Carissa and Tyler's surfing but I reckon they get 'top 4' points a lot of the time.

norchock, 1428058529

Pottz keeps banging on about "back in the day" and turpel's "blow tail"and "lays the hammer down".there new ones to me.

Coops70, 1428103771

What about the "well that's what you have to do" it's like no shit Sherlock . I can't listen to potzz or turpel, drive me bloody nuts!

Sheepdog, 1428190307

Fuuuuuck!!!!! Toledo!!!

saltyone, 1428200630

hey check out the dbah surf cam… freaky

mackdog, 1428212061

Fred Pawle from The Australian just written a funny article about the commentary during the De Souza v Hobgood heat. Pretty much called Pottz, Turpel and Todd Kline morons

http://m.theaustralian.com.au/sport/opinion/commentary-on-scores-at-bells-beach-rip-curl-pro-only-reveals-trouble-in-sport/story-e6frg7t6-1227292031739

interesting the last bit on pay per viewing.. pretty crap yet not surprised

wellymon, 1428219279

Is there a difference of commentary between the males and Females.
Turpell sounds like he's trying get a little boom boom, its sounds a little personal IMO...?

saltyone, 1428306223

I think Turpell froths over just about anything.
Damn Mick surfed great one more wave he would've gone through..

poo-man, 1428314051

Yeah mick looked real good on that one good one he got.
What's going on with Medina? Looks like he's lost a bit of confidence or something since Toledo has emerged.

saltyone, 1428364106

yeh bit of internal brazilian pressure I guess.
grrr medina won over kelly … kellys surfing is so much better. he will be kicking himself for screwing up that last one

memlasurf, 1428374310

Yep Mick looked great on that larger wave, Toledo looks unbeatable on the smaller ones and the commentary is mega daggy. Once upon a time I thought surfing was supposed to be cool now it looks like a bad version of the channel 9 news. It is DULL, BORING and EMBARRASSING and who is that Chelsea woman she has got to go looks and talks like a mannequin. They really need to add some fun and energy to the whole thing at the moment it is bland on beige.

Coops70, 1428389152

Can't polish a turd

saltyone, 1428390140

Ha memlasurf couldn't be more spot on there!! it's one big fat soggy biscuit alright...

staitey, 1428404141

when did it become a 'rock and roll' floater??

mackdog, 1428407112

Probably about the same time as when anyone gets close to falling off in shallow water, Pottz will say they are going down on the 'bricks' . It used to be just JBay but now every break has bricks according to Pottz

Nick Bone, 1428457337

Off topic but i feel the whole WSL thing is catering for a minority young califorian crowd. As in the cliched cali surf type.

Back on topic i cant wait too pull into the carpark and hear "wow! What a rock n roll float!" Or "crazy blow tail!"
They should have a hightlight reel in the post day patrol show (or whatever its called) of mr turpels calls for the day. Im sure it would be a hit!!

goofyfoot, 1428458135
when did it become a 'rock and roll' floater??
The highlights of the surfing on the news last night showed a wave where turpel called it a "rock and roll float"
I was with a couple of mates who don't surf and they asked me wtf is that?
I had no idea...

goofyfoot, 1428458149

It's gotta stop

goofyfoot, 1428458230

And another one is " the layback hammer"!!!
JUST SHUT UP!!

norchock, 1428458474

Roy and hg maybe?

saltyone, 1428495401

These comps NEED Roy and Hg!!! It's crying out for it!!

southey, 1428498243

Ben , is there any legal implications to you guys running an aural broadcast on this site with live commentary , that could be played as the footage goes out live on WSL's site .
Alah , like Roy & HG broadcasting the state of origin and such ......
I can just shut my eyes now and think of possible commentary combo's like : -
Donny & SD as surfings version of Bill Lawry & Tony Greig ...... perhaps caml and jug as special insight commentary , the doyan of Australian surfing blogsville blindboy , and the stats man udo ...... don't forget shaun and sid the fish as roving reporters ....... luckily for all listeners it'll be a non visual medium ;-)

Sheepdog, 1428529617

Yeeesss, aand those lettle brazilianz reely are flixibel.... Quart amazing..... Funning reely haz hez wurk cut art heear..... Ispisharly with the pleeyer cumfut level beeeeing so wet.....
Ova to yooo Dunny....

Sheepdog, 1428529973

And don't forget to tune in every night for "surfy classifieds", hosted by Ben, with craig and stu on the panel, and of course the one and only award winning southey dressed in drag.... "Southeys arrow" is the highlight of the show

mk1, 1428533310
Can't polish a turd
But you can roll it in glitter! Am I right WSL, eh, eh??

Sheepdog, 1428534712

The mick jordy heat was a good one..... Average conditions , but good surfers made it look easy....

southey, 1428541520

fuck her ( actually i wouldn't with your dick ) ,
comeone , if i have to play the herione atleast make it worthy . she an idiot with no clue on the game . all she knows is how to dismantle /destabilise a clubs board ..... ever since her late father got axed at richmond she's been a vindictive cunt .
end rant ....
please come up with another " drag " character , coz i'm not gonna wear the heals unless its worthwhile

Sheepdog, 1428541679

Well..... At least she's alive..... Unlike Tony...... ;)

southey, 1428542112

you haven't watched the show lately have you . ( its like weekend at Burnies )

Sheepdog, 1428542341

I have...... It should be renamed "the melbourne/richmond/dons drug saga chatathon".....

But hey.... Tony Greig has been dead for years...... So a caro comparison jibe was warranted... ;)

fartpaddler, 1428544851

was just watching bells final 'live'
...headline comes up below the screen.... 'Congrats Mick Fanning! Apr 09, 2015' while there was still a few minutes to go.....kind of spoiled it. happen to anybody else??

saltyone, 1428546370

Southey and Sheepie I'll be tuning in for sure, bring it on!

memlasurf, 1428552462

Cracker of a final day with Mick just getting the nod. Well done to the organisers must have been a hard one this year but the boys made it look way too easy, and Stu you were right about Adriano he is a fighter and definitely wants to be out there (more than I could say for JJF's effort who looked like he wanted to get back to Hawaii as soon as possible). Special mentions to Nat for those vicious snaps and Filipe for his small wave freak show. Now if they can just piss the commentators off except for the the token Aussie (he is the best in my opinion).

stunet, 1428554751

He's not the most stylish surfer but Adriano has a clever head and heart full of mojo. He's really pulled in his fast twitch surfing and settled on long, connected bottom and top turns that keep the rail engaged. You just can't fake that stuff at Bells and he's now made the finals twice in a row 'cos of it.

Sheepdog, 1428555501

Yeah, classy bottom turn, stu.... One for the purists..... hey, saltyone.... I can do special comments, but I'll be fucked if I'm gonna sit there all day long and waffle shit lol....... Dave and welly are the guys for that ;)

If I had to, I'd tell everyone to shut the fuck up whilst a guy is surfing.... If Fanning does a cutty, I really don't have to tell the viewers, do I..... I'd just let the viewers enjoy the sound of the ocean, the crowd cheering, and the spectacle of the guy riding... Maybe throw in the odd "wow" if they do something rad.... I think the odd 20 seconds of NO commentary would make good contrast and break up the monotone chinese water torture talkfest...... We could then chat away during the replay......

wellymon, 1428558025

Dave and welly are the guys for that ;)

Thats a little bit rude mate;)

Its not what your best buddy BoogieFever thinks :-P

Sheepdog, 1428561377

Just for you, welly :p

wellymon, 1428562103

Haha thats Silver for sure Dawg:)
Those affros are something eh, a family of nine, what a great performance.
The crowd were really rocking eh?

Yeah lol..... No selfies.... No sms.... Just paaaaarrrttaaaeee lol

blindboy, 1428721095

I have never been a cricket fan, but we obviously need to find a Richie Benaud! As an aside I have this vague memory of him actually managing Nat Young early in his career. Any one know more!

Sheepdog, 1428723528

Dunno, BB.... But one of the quotes I heard yesterday about Benauds commentary style sorta fits in with what i was saying above.... Benaud was given some advice by I forget who when he first took up the microphone.... Basically "only speak if you can ad something to the picture"....... Jim Maxwell summed it up about Benaud;
"And really, the trick to that was that there weren't a lot of words because he was a master of the pause and the silence, because he realised on television you need to add something to the picture and if you can't do that, don't say anything."

So, going back to my point about NOT commenting during a ride...... I think microphones should be set up near the main crowd..... And during a ride, the commentators should remain quiet, a bit like during a tennis point...... Us the viewers would just hear the ocean, and the crowd going off during each manoeuvre... This would give the audio some contrast.... Sometimes a few seconds of silence is more effective...... At the end of the ride, the commentators can give the "wows" and the "that was amaaazing", and analyse the replay....
No harm in giving it a go, even on one or two waves a heat......

goofyfoot, 1428728780

Great idea Sheepy, would work well I reckon

wellymon, 1428733061

RIP Mr Benaud.

Different insight Sheepio, I like it;)

Sure RB would give JT a run for his money within audience appreciation......!
Anyways the circus of surfing is growing tenfold.

I like this idea a lot, i have found myself pressing mute and just putting on some music when Im watching.
Its super super painful to listen to. The less the better, I think they have taken the commentary models from comps like the x-games where the commentators are explaining every trick performed in the half pipe, slope style, street skating etc. Surfing kind of speaks for itself so it not necessary IMO.
Comment the replay

Sheepdog, 1428739618

Cheers, guys..... And it breaks the "monotone non stop talkfest".... Thomas, they could also take something out of your "putting some music on", during the replay I reckon........
So to recap - no talking or music during a live ride - just that wonderful ocean sound, and the crowd response.... During the replay, some soft background modern tunes as the commentators dissect the ride... heck, smart marketing would even have the artist and name of track in the bottom right hand corner... Cha ching lol.....

Give it a go, WSL.... Nothing to lose...... Maybe trial it in some early heats..... If the idea is better on paper than in practice, just go back to the current format.....

saltyone, 1428740940

yep Sheepy me like it too.. you're onto it. Less IS more that's for sure. The spaces.. it's the same in music.. need to have spaces, to let things settle to let it sink in, to ponder, gives time to breathe. Bells beach is part of the beautiful nature reserve, it's important to also let that be acknowledged, and not in a quick side comment but to be integrated, through the sound of the ocean. The ocean… that vast huge expanse that ebbs and flows with the magnetic pull on the moon, a reminder of mysteries of the universe !That mystery is a sacred thing actually.. so by dissecting and analysing every move a surfer makes it is taking away from that. And how many times when asked do surfers often say they don't remember what happened on that wave.. they just surfed it. It's that beautiful being in the moment thing. Doesn't need to be continually dissected and picked at and pulled apart..

saltyone, 1428741497

I think the live ride with no commentary , and replay /music idea is a good one. Seriously !

Sheepdog, 1428741684

You're not gonna believe this, saltyone... Wifey just yelled out... Watching AFL before the game on CH7...... They dubbed Brian Taylor Football commentary over footage of the Bells surfing...... WTF???????? lol Hilarious!!!!!!
Have a good night, bloke ;)

wellymon, 1428742083

Good night Sheepio;)

Awesome quote Saltynine.
Thats gonna stay in my mind for a long time.
Well said champ
Love it.
Cheers:)

Didn't that contest finish?

dastasha, 1428803723
How many times do we need to be told that these are the best surfers in the world?
Yeah more like the most privileged, most marketable surfers in the world.
I think they made a mistake letting JJF on the tour. He might actually be one of the best. I reckon they told him to tone it down a bit after that France/Spain comp wherever it was. He kept blowing up and pulling in on those huge bombs. I'm sure Jack Parrow wanted to call it off.
Anyway JJ was back to doing bunny hops like the others at Snapper. Though he was still surfing pretty smooth

saltyone, 1428873352

think JJF is going to go well as Margs. He is amazing to watch, incredible surfer, got that natural "thing" that so many other surfers on the tour are trying100 times harder to emulate. Not afraid to tackle the big stuff. I'd love to see some big bombs/barrells being caught in the comp .. bunny hopping - yeah pretty shite hey, john john looked as thrilled as sorting his sock drawer throughout that heat

Mr Wax, 1428969380

They are best surfers on the" planet ". So Pottz, does that mean you where the best on the planet ? Oh yeah Jo its so hard to be the best on the planet . It feels so good to be the only surfer on the planet Jo .

wingnut2443, 1428970351

Yep, they need to add in in "competitive" or "competition" whenever they say that ...

"these are the best COMPETITION surfers on the planet"

Performing at an elite level, in the moment required, is a skill distinct from the art of surfing. Let's just call it for what it is ...

PS: The idea about silence and the crowd reaction as part of the commentary telecast would be good.
