Kenya Airways Yes Varies Surfboards over 107cm long must ALWAYS be pre-booked.

Anyone ride shorter than (3 feet 6 1/8 inches)?
Even the 'Somalian Pirates' would have a hard time getting on board!

eat-your-vegies, 1424632710

thanx guys.

love your work

Anyone with horror stories of boards totaled from airlines? AA from newyork to Baja destroyed my board after it failed to make a connecting flight, it looked like it was kicked all the way to Baja! Disgraceful! I fought it and got 950 US dollars back. It was brand new and I was gutted. Anyway thanks for all the info so helpful!

Funny man you are Welly! Hahah

seaman-staines, 1424650157

I have noticed Virgin seem to charge for boards NZ to Australia as a matter of course now, I just leave a board over there it's cheaper.

trolleyboy, 1424650657

Wizz Airlines sounds like fun.

thermalben, 1424650891

Jetstar measured my boards (domestic) last week. They've replicated Mum and Dad's old system of a texta mark on the wall next to the counter, with "190cm" scrawled next to it. Managed to keep my boards on an angle so they came in well under.

Point is: they're getting gnarly on baggage. Also weighing carry-on luggage too (combined total no more than 7kg).

donweather, 1424659715

Ben, all budget airlines will do this, or will do this more so than the more expensive airlines as this is a major directive from their CEO as it (charging for excess baggage at the airport) makes a considerable cost of the shortfall in their ticket price, thus recovering a reasonable amount of their losses.

And they know that once you're at the airport with all your luggage they've got you with a gun pointed to your head.

scottishsponger, 1424662316

This is impressive guys, but you omitted Fiji Airways. They accept surfboards (I've only ever travelled with shortboards so don't know the max length) but charge $50 for the privilege. Last time I flew with them they also wanted to sting me an excess baggage weight fee in addition to the $50. That was going to set me back almost $250! After a protracted argument they agreed it should only be the $50 fee, but I won't fly on them again with surfboards as result.

chin, 1424662512

What airport Ben, Sydney?
I was nervous about Jetstar Perth (A320) to Indo with a 7 footer but they didn't blink and I couldn't see anything they could use to measure it anyway, unless they had a tape measure behind the desk.
They did manage to put a hole in it though. They can still put over-length boards on a 320, but they go outside the cargo module, in the cargo hold.

thermalben, 1424662803

Yep, Sydney Airport.

erikb, 1427024032

Currently trying to book flights back to europe via indo and finding this page absolute GOLD! Thanks heaps!

Flew Island Air between Oahu and Maui last week. They charge US$35:00 each way for boardbag up to eight feet, under 50lbs. Extra US$35:00 if heavier.

asharper001, 1427061798

G'day scottishsponger,

Fiji airways states in excess baggage:

International (A$50 Australia to Fiji and same return)
◾Bulky items consist of any 'one' piece exceeding 158cm (62in) but not exceeding 277cm (109in) in total dimension [length + width + height], at a maximum weight of 23kg (50lbs), (may include surfboards, golf bags and other equipment)
◾Bulky items are subject to the bulky item fee plus the rate of excess weight beyond each passenger's allowance.
◾Any piece exceeding 277cm (109in) in total dimension [length + width + height] must be carried as Freight

Domestic is pretty much the same but they charge FJ$100 which is around $62 Aussie at the moment.

Last time in Fiji (July 2012), had no real issue with Fiji Airways (previously Air Pacific when I flew with them). Got charged as above (although FJ$100 was A$52 back then). Took a 6'4", 6'6", and a 7'0". As all in one board bag, only paid the single charge. Only issue was whether you get all your boards on the small inter-island planes they run (all dependant on how much room they have in the hold). I was lucky, others not so and had to have their boards come out on the next days plane. Things might have changed in the last three years and as donweather mentioned, could be a CEO directive to harden up and get more money out of people.

Guess the trick is to fly Virgin or someone else international and only use Fiji Airways for domestic. At least you might save the A$50 each way international.

Just..thanks
This sort of conclusive info is difficult to find, particularly for low cost carriers

udo, 1493589786

Malindo Air - Anyone used them ?
Depart Aust Perth and Brisbane....site is a bit vague on carrying surfboards.

donweather, 1497401799

You may want to amend the above for Jetstar. As of 15 March they've now amended their fees to $AUD25 per surfboard bag. This is in addition to the checked baggage weight costs. So if you're checking in a 25kg surfboard travel bag on any Jetstar flight it now costs you $25 for the 25kg checked baggage PLUS $25 for the oversize baggage "handling" fee.....so total of $50 extra EACH WAY for a surfboard travel bag!!!

Fcking jetstar rort as it doesn't cost the airline a single cent more for the oversize baggage!!!

lostdoggy, 1497404951

That pissed me off too, Don. And when booking luggage it says it's best to book the oversize fee on the website but there is no where to actually select it. (I looked multiple times.

So I just booked the 20kg, got to the airport and weighed in combined total of 20.5kg.
No worries, no oversize charge either.

Must've swayed her with my smile, haha.

udo, 1497405962

Malindo Air will include 1 surfboard up to 2mt long in your 30kg allowance
Extra boards will be charged at $20 per kilo . Anyone flown with them ?

Craig, 1497407820

That Jetstar tax stung me a couple of weeks ago. What a joke!

I brought it up with them, and said well if I'm paying the extra $25 surely there'll be extra care taken and no damage to the boards at all! Sitll had to sign the waiver.

Old mate told me it was because too many people were abusing the oversized items space with large bulky items. What ever it is, to charge 25$ just for an oversized bag and then to have to also pay the baggage weight of that is criminal!

donweather, 1497411296

I feel like writing to the ACCC and asking them to write to Jetstar as to how they can justify it costs them $25 to handle a surfboard.

They can't enforce it if you booked your ticket pre 15 March 2017 (fortunately I booked Dec 2016).

It now just means other airlines are worth looking at now.

donweather, 1497411379

It is there on their website. Just have to click the little blue writing "oversize baggage". But its the same cost whether you pay on line or at the airport. I'd try at the airport to see if the gay check in guy likes you or not!!! ;)

udo, 1498467549

Nothing to do with Board Fees ...But
Air Asia - Pilot asks you to say a Prayer WTF ...why didnt this plane land at Pt Headland rather than return to Perth ?

crip, 1498523801

A few years ago I was thinking Air Asia would be ok to fly with, no frills and therefore cheaper than the others. Now we know why they're cheap. No way would I fly with them now.

udo, 1498523993
