hi all,new here,i was told to check it out as i am mentioned a bit.here are some facts.i have lived in penong since 1980,surfed there since early 70s,glassed ,sanded for gravelle for 20 years recently retired(do dings at caves)and have a deep passion for the places and the people of the far west coast.i mainly sup now i am 60 and get out most se to ne days,no one is banned at caves,but be stupid or a danger to anyone you will be told, just like anywhere.i know jeff and his son,both are good people and they know my view and most others here is that skis are great,they open many more doors,but we love our bay here and dont like seeing even dingys out there ,nothing noisy with a motor hell we dont even like motor bikes in our car park.we stop pros exploiting ,take the money and leave us to mop up,people often say to us 'the place is just like i remember 20yrs ago,thank the localism for that ,if u are polite and dont paddle inside u will have no trouble here,feel free to quiz,cheers sunny

Jeff, you do force what is quite often an uncomfortable experience onto people when you start buzzing around lineups on skis when people are already paddling.
If you still took the time to enjoy being in a lineup without a jetski you might understand again what people get annoyed about and how a ski running around a line up can ruin a pretty nice experience for people.
Why the no paddling anymore? years of working fishing boats put the shark fear into you?

Also I would have thought that if you were going to do tours you would want to try and keep some mysticism about the place you want to go to and not spruik spots? Even the guys in the Mentawais try to guard any spots that they think may be unknown so that they can try and get their customers into uncrowded waves.
I am sure there are plenty of spots down there that are hard to access, but more exposure will lead to more people and will lead to it being harder to get people into uncrowded waves in all conditions taking away some of the allure of going ona surf tour.

Jeff I am pretty sure you said something about paddle surfers dont have the right to tell skis to go away and I dont disagree. But it doesnt change the fact that for a lot of people it puts a downer on a surf when you are paddling and then a ski or skis start buzzing around.
The "final stab" was a question as I have two generations of my family that stopped going in the water because of too much shark exposure, as gay as i tell them they are they wont be getting back in unless it is an emergency. I started having recurring nightmares about them that almost spooked me out of the water but one of the best parts about surfing is sitting out in the elements and taking drops on solid waves so i thought it better to get over it.
I am not very good at math or that smart but i have seen how many big fish live in the ocean including the submarines that give you the nervous shits whenever you think about them.

And there are still mysto spots, but i have seen "mysto" spots away from the spotlight that start to get exposure even just by word of mouth then a couple of emails with a photo attached, that suddenly become a bit of a hassle to surf. Spots that a few years earlier you knew that when they were on it would have only been a small bunch of guys (at the most) with the knowledge and means to get to these places.
Now with fly in fly outs everyone seems to have half the year to go surfing and plenty of disposable cash to throw at getting to remote spots.

After seeing some of the spots in Oz that are probably as hard as anywhere to get to become even semi busy I dont believe for a minute that these mysto spots are always going to be like that cause surfers are greedy pigs in general and when they find out about these mysto spots and work out what conditions they need to break they go onto the watch list.

Jeff, the thing that has got everyone offside is long held unwritten rules, which have formed part of the SA surf pscychy are being eroded.

Being discreet with names/locations, staying on the beach and letting the locals finish their session before heading out and crowding the lineup, not putting photo's out there to the wider surf community- just generally not popularising the area.

But now everyone that has an affinity with the area can see where its going- 5 years ago could any one picture a live streamed contest from YB's? Would anyone have thought they would have seen a couple of top 5 pros at BF's covered by mainstream media? could anyone have pictured people talking online about spots with island in the name so freely like their talking about the weather? A surf charter running on the EP?

And whether we like it or not, you've played a large part in these changes.

I grant its never gonna be Gold coast crowded over there, but it will put more pressure on the more exposed spots which didn't need to be there. How many pro fly in's and photoshoots been conducted in the last 12 months? How many photos of the EP have been published?

Continue to pioneer uncharted tow waves, participate in already established tow contests elsewhere and all that good stuff, its a free world- but people are apprehensive of the media hype that seems to follow and focus on the WC.

What is the driver for it all Jeff, why the need for all the media exposure? As i don't understand?

Jeff, all that stuff that you love doing is pretty much what everyone who grew up in the country loves doing? Fast toys, guns, and catching and consuming things from the ocean and bush are pretty much staple activities for a lot of people.
Generally speaking everyone gets to keep on doing all this stuff until someone or some people fuck it up for everyone else. It’s kind of like going to the park and sitting down with the family and there is a huge expanse of park and some muppet starts hooning around you with a lawnmower or starts playing cricket or throwing a Frisbee over your head. It is fucken annoying and usually leads to problems.
If they stay down the other end of the park there isn’t usually a problem and no reason for the fun police to start hassling them or getting them booted out of the park.
I don’t know you from a bar of soap and I have never been to SA and there is a good chance that you and your mates respect the place you live but I would have thought that the “park” where you are from is way big enough to stay under the fun polices radars.

As far as the naming and shaming of spots you kinda contradict yourself a bit from time to time;

I agree with lpt you are going to fark it and it has already started, the place has blown out massively in the last couple of years as far as being visible to the everyday surfer and I reckon the situation is going to change way quicker than you think.
I went and lived in a massive Asian city for four years and just got back and things have changed big time in four years in some previously remote areas, I just count my lucky stars that I got to see and live in some of these spots before the masses caught on. And I hope there are a few left around that my young fellas can enjoy in a decade.
If you are going to do charters down there I reckon you are kind of shooting yourself in the foot by getting on chat forums and rattling off names of places even if they are supposedly known to you and you mates. I would have thought the best way to attract people would be by the promise of “mysto” waves?
There is no way I would pay to go on a charter to surf waves that everyone already knows of and how to get to them already. Don’t sell me spot names or islands that I can just google and work out if my centre console or 4WD can get there. Sell me something that I can’t have unless I get on board.

You are right Zambezi it is 2012 and it is way harder to keep a secret, probably all the more reason for people to try a bit harder.
I just took a zoom around on google earth to some of the spots that you mentioned Jeff..... no shit it looks like a wave paradise, rights, lefts, peaks, bombies, beachies, islands, all sheltered on different sides of point and bays so the different winds and swell directions will always harbour something. All within a nice compact little stretch of coast that is about 500km's as the crow flys.
And your freak of nature island that no one will get to in Spencer gulf, you are right it is a freak of nature for where it sits. Is it worth buying a block of land there? Does it really harbour one of the best waves in the world? if so maybe i should by a block there and eat SBT sushi and abalone for the rest of my days?

Zambesi the place does look amazing and i cant believe i didnt really know about it until recently. Everyone has known about cactus but to now know that the place harbours so many gems in a relativley small stretch of coastline gets my stoke levels up.
To also know that the locals are a bunch of good dudes that like sharing stories and beers at the pub gets my stoke levels even higher.
I have been busy wasting my time searching and getting skunked through my own barren backyard for all of these years when i should have just been B Lining it straight to this beautifull part of Oz.

I might be missing something here. Is the West coast already crowded? Does everybody know about these spots except me? Am i the only one who hasnt sampled the warm hospitality and fine waves?
Is it already like SW Oz where you pull up at dawn with the rest of the surfing world and try to race out and get a couple of sneaky waves before it becomes a free for all, either that or just admit defeat and go to a second tier wave where you know you will at least get a higher wave count of average waves?
Still really fun and in a beutifull environment but it is way more fun when you arent having to hassle and fight for waves all the time.

I reckon there are still alot of people like me out there who would love to surf this place and with all this sharing of love on a public forum probably will, hopefully it will still be as lovley and nice as when you surfed it.

I know we've had more than our share of attacks, but the year I rocked up there an ab diver got bit in half. Welcome to Mary-Ann Harbour! The bronzies are as big as horses too. We pulled up a ten footer that grabbed the mast of the Nereda and shook fuck out of it. It then started to chew into our freshly cut gummys on deck then spat out six pups! That was between Crazies (aptly named) and one of those potential offshore reefs. You can have that joint too!

@Reece by all means check it out, but just have a head about ya mate. This vast coast is a special place but it's not all beer and skittles in the Bight. Good people die out here in these waters. Too often. Sure some things may have changed round here of late, but what remains is that if theres one thing this place deserves its Respect.

*Actually the biggest pointer I've ever seen was alongside Yatala Reef. I see that joint mentioned somewhere here too. A 20 footer biting at the livers hanging from the Opal's scuppers. Zambezi, I don't think Christo's book would of done anything to the crowds or the experience out west. The only people that can relate to it have been there and everyone else wouldn't give a rats.

As turns has stated it all comes down to respect out there both in and out of the water and if you show up with a good attitude you'll have a great time!

This brings me to a trip a couple of years ago which I'm sure a few of the locals will remember.

A van full of 4 backpackers rolled the van on the way to the beach from Penong. They weren't wearing seatbelts for the first time of their around Australia trip and two who were sleeping in the back got tumbled while the front passenger had to pull his leg in from outside the window as it rolled.



Here's the car after and you can see they were all very lucky to only come out with cuts and bruises.. soo many others don't.

Anyways one of the guys freaked and got a bus back to Adelaide while the other 3, a guy from QLD and two girls were stuck at the campsite for a week while borrowing gear off some of the locals.

The 3 of them were cool as and I camped next to them my whole stay but the QLD guy didn't quite understand the etiquette and was paddling inside the older locals on a smaller day who were waiting for the good wider sets. Although he was a great guy I felt like distancing myself from him in the surf as I didn't want to be associated with this behaviour.

Anyways after a few days a solid 6-8ft swell hit and it was pumping. Old mate Qld'er mistimed the jump off and put a huge gouge in the bottom of his board and then during the surf blew a take off and copped the board to the face splitting his eyebrow.

I drove him back to Ceduna to get patched up and we gave the board to Sunny to patch up.

Now Sunny was great and it'll be interesting if he remembers this, but a generous fee of $50 was asked for which for fixing a few dings within a day in the middle of nowhere shouldn't be sneezed at!

QLD'er wasn't happy and started to argue with Sonny, and Sonny rightfully got pissed off as you would do with all the help the locals had given him and the 2 other girls. I told the Qld'er to leave it and just pay the money as it was very generous and it was dealt with.

Now the attitude this guy had isn't what you want to bring to the area and I guess he paid for it in both board damage and also a cut brow.

I'm not writing off the guy either, he was good to hang around with, but just had a bit of the wrong attitude.

Also on a side note the 2 girls with him, 1 a Norwegian backpacker, and the other an English, both skinny blonde and good looking were the talk of the town! One was tied down with QLD'er, but I got to 'be-friend' the Norwegian which was the icing on an epic trip of waves, especially in an area where you're locally to see a girl, let along a good looking on at all!

Believe it or not I agree with you on some things, there would be heaps of footage of the day, hand it over to the cops and let a judge decide. The size waves you are out on are the place where jetskis belong, but I think the guys with the bigger balls paddling should have the right of way, if they are dong it successfully. Smuco I am 56 years old, to old to be surfing waves like that, but I do still paddle into waves that are a fair size, I have to choose my battles. I'm not being macho, just pointing out that the guys paddling in should really have the right of way A. for safety. B. because they are the ones using more skill and pitting themselves against nature. i only weighed into this debate because i didnt agree with some of the stuff being written about skis and the blow out of spots that may not even be secret but are definitley not main stream.
now there seems to be a ton of contradictory statements that are really hard to dredge up because if you swing from thread to thread you lose all of your hard earned writings but here is one from mr Schmucker "Scott; i dont think paddle surfers have the right to tell skis to go away...the rules are 4knts 50 mtrs...so they are the rules...IMPORTANT;the drivers of the skis must be able to drive!! If you can tow at 4knots at 50 metres at a surf spot you are doing a hell of a good job i reckon, is this possible???
My personal opinion is that most of the problems here are that people seem to be annoyed at the internet blowout of spots and the invitation for people to come and sample all these spots that are reasonably sacred to some. (sounds from these threads like the popular spots are becoming more popular?)

In saying that the models are really divergent regarding the weekend and early next week with moderate falls probably likely as that cold front combines with an inland trough.

Looks like there'll be some sort of rainfall event, but how much and when will be clearer over the coming days. Wonder if Kelly will hang around for the end of the week?

This week , and perhaps the next Month . Will continue to not provide that much , whilst there is still a strong Easterly influence on SE Aust . This is no-doubt the dieing throws of this summers La Nina ... And ultimately this blocking Pattern of Easterly's , has helped produce the EPIC surf that has been regularly experienced in the last few weeks . It's created a buffer to stop the fronts extending North and East , and has held the LWT in the Southern WA region of longitudes in the last three pulses . Of which late this week is another , the Models are up in the Air as Craig mentioned , on what follows this weekend .

If i were you i would start reading WeatherZone , there atleats 3 or 4 Weather Guru's in the SA threads , and one of them is a Professional Independant forecaster that specialises in Ag forecasts and Precipitation patterns . His tag is " Bucketing Down " , and his own site is HOLTON Weather . You will get free advice off him if you contribute to the WZ Forum , when you ask nicely ....

There is talk of a Negative IOD establishing this Winter / Spring , this provides good NW moisture feeds to SE Aust . Its still early days , But enough of the Geek talk ..... Have a look for yourself ...

@ pharmer..the talk I've heard is no major rain patterns 'til June or in other words no major break un til then. You should have oodles of sub-soil moisture so maybe only a little bit of rain will help. Cyp has never had a bad year has it? Elders weather gives you free weather forecasts but most weather observers change their prediction evry 12hrs or so.

thanks for all that information guys, will look into it further, as for there being oodles of sub surface moisture, I can assure you there is very little on cyp, my guess is theres plenty in the eastern states to grow a bumper crop, thus putting downward pressure on domestic grain prices. You aint wrong if you say we have had a dream run in the past 20yrs, not unlike the dream run of quality surf days this month, and it looks set to continue :) but all good things come to an end and records show even cyp has to expierience dry winters and hot windy dry springs, they can be devastating,
fortunately we are already prepared and capable of handling the worst case senarios, unlike many other farmers who take a much larger gamble every year with the weather and the bank manager.
Anyways its only early days yet so I probably should pack the ute and head west, love to see ks 11 on my travels and catch up with Jeff for a beer or 10...

Hopefully before i get there you give me more directions to the good waves so my trip is easier and i dont have to work for an epic wave. Hopefully it isnt booked with lumps though, but apparently SA will sort itself out so that should be fine.

.....please sir.. its not the majority that think this of the "Blowins"i assure you!...most of the kids love the pros and the good surfers come as it inspires them. There are some guys that seem to let the visitors spoil "their day"which is sad but i'm of the mind that its their problem not the blowins problem...

as for naming places...if you think it brings more crowds well you are wrong...if anything its the photos and we have been dealing with that for a very long time now. Dont underestimate the surfers nature to chase waves around this country and the visitors like yourself have been coming for a long time...i dont think you should have to put up with the crap that you say you have experienced either.

Fortunately this beautiful state has many spots, sharks & people who are shit scared of both. Jeff i understand your reasons (believe it or not everyone else) and i also see other peoples point of view. If we search a little bit further, study swell maps, coastal geography, etc, we are still able to find solo waves on a regular basis. Hey guys, reading these threads the past few months has been quite entertaining, and pretty self defining of the types of people you are.... Jeff is the sort of bloke who speaks his mind when given the opportunity, i commend him for that, right or wrong, id do the same if im passionate enough about something. All you haters are giving Smucks the best publicity ever if it is true that he want to run surf charters in S.A.
Simple and plain..
Almost all surfers,australia wide/ worldwide, know south oz recieves the full brunt of the roaring 40's southern ocean groundswell, you only have to look at a map of Australia??? Most surfers worldwide also have seen Jaws (the movie) and are aware our waters are alive with marine life, especially the men in grey suits..I saw a very large one yesterday while surfing alone a long way off shore, I know the risks.
Now that they are protected, (which i am a supporter of), i imagine they will keep the crowds to a minimum.
Also ive read surfing magazine, heard and seen sick photos of waves on an island mentioned in these threads, My questions to you haters is this, Have you surfed there?? and if not why?? I havn't, because i cant get out there, now at least i could call Jeff, probably at short notice and he could provide me the opportunity to get amongst it...and probably more spots that HE HASNT EXPOSED
I wish you all the best with your venture Jeff, and hope one day i can jump onboard and take advantage of your local knowledge learnt from a lifetime of being a waterman/ fisherman/surfer. We all know S.A is notoriously fickle and good days are rare and short lived so Jeff will still have to work hard, diversify to make a go of it and earn a living, like the rest of us, well most of us anyway..

hey pharmer...even if a charter operation doesnt get goin i'm sure myself and a bunch of likeminded folk will keep doin what we're doin and getn shacked and chasing new waves and new days at old waves...you know its amazing that for years a lot of the waves we surfed we juz thought they broke at a certain size and conditions/tides/etc....only to find out that there is another stack of days that these reefs and others turn on the gas with no one there... all good stuff and takes a certain level of committment and searching to work this all out....i remind the readers that this information is not for these pages and is not for sale.
