Don’t call it a comeback

Surfers are athletes.

Chiselled gods with preternatural levels of fitness , effortless ability and aesthetic beauty. Refined instruments of aquatic grace to a man or woman.

Everyone knows this to be incontrovertibly true.

So why are my boardies so tight ?

Unfortunately, the image of the stereotypical surfer fails to address the slightly grotesque reality of those wave riders who’ve regrettably misplaced their abdominal muscles under an unsightly layer of pudge. Of course there’s never an acceptable excuse for letting your physique and therefore your health deteriorate, but mitigating factors aren’t too far away for many crew.

Excessive work responsibilities , familial obligations, injury , location, failing motivation , depression and illness are amongst the varied reasons why you’d wake up one day and find the stomach verandah is extending over the tool shed below the belt.

Then there’s the other reasons for losing condition , many of which I’ve explored extensively....love of food or drink , laziness, apathy amongst them. Some crew are all about hedonism and indulgence - admirable traits in moderation- but when you start to realise that your spirit animal is neither the dynamic dolphin nor the potent puma , but is actually more likely to be the golden labrador fixatedly staring at the kitchen from its spot on the lounge , or that your patron is Saint Occhilupo of the Rubbery Girth then you’d best keep an eye on your waistline.

My lifestyle, body type and inclinations find me constantly yo-yoing in weight and fitness. Sometimes I’m lean , strong and capable . Other times I’m chubby , weak and slack. The ceaseless cycle of peak and trough , top and bottom which seems to be my lot in this world.

Right now I’m on the resurgence. A dedicated program to ascend to the lofty heights of my personal mediocrity. As usual I had to bottom out before the turnaround......such is life. As I’ve embarked on this project of renewal I’ve had reason to realise that I’m in no way on my own in this situation and that some crew may not know how to halt their decent into dicreptitude , may not truly realise the pitfalls of not arresting the decline or may just need a bit of inspiration to get up off the floor and rediscover the ability to own their destiny.

So here it is ....Blowin’s guide to exiting the world of the fat bastard.

Your health is the most valuable asset you possess. Being fat or out of shape has repercussions ranging far beyond looking bad in a wetsuit *. Without your health and physicality you are hugely diminished. You cant enjoy activities with your loved ones .You can’t earn a living. You DIE ....which is bad. Being sick or infirm can be hugely expensive.

Surfing is a gift for getting fit. The key to getting stronger is in your hands.

And the best way to get fit in my eyes is to treat it like you would any other issue of overwhelming priority. Do it properly Treat the act like an investment in yourself .

Step 1/ Find a location with a good , consistent wave within easy access from accomodation and go there immediately. It doesn’t have to be the best wave in the world , just somewhere that you can basically surf everyday and for all day if possible. Somewhere you can amass a high wave count and expend a lot of energy day after day , irrespective of time , tide or wind conditions. Sound impossible? It’s not at all when you start looking.

Step 2/ Go there on your own. Sounds boring / sad / lonely , right ? Who gives a fuck .... you’re here to get fit , not go on a bucks party or to laze around gossiping whilst getting back rubs.

Solo means focus and no distractions . It means you aren’t likely to find a beer shoved in your hand at lunch and you won’t be waking up the next day hungover, having to again start from scratch after you’ve decided to reward yourselves following a taxing surf. You want single , bloody-minded purpose. This ain’t meant to be fun , it’s meant to be a second chance before you fall over the edge into the void of the perpetual fatfuck.

And a bit of silence and time for contemplation never hurt anyone.

Step 3/ Make it fun ! Yeah , yeah , I know what I just said , but If you’ve chosen your destination correctly, you’ll be surfing better within days. Weight falls off quickly with the right diet and regular exercise and your resurgent strength, agility and range of motion will increase your surfing ability and therefore your enjoyment of the act. Watch surf movies between sessions. Take this moment to immerse yourself completely in surfing . Do it for your loved ones ....the fitter you are , the healthier you’ll be and your time together will be maximised .

Step 4/ Eat clean . The eating part is hard if you aren’t clued up in healthy eating. Research good eating habits , but it’s basically lots of fruit , veggies , quality protein and as much unprocessed foods as possible. Completely unprocessed is best.

Choice of destination will be influenced by availability of good , fresh , healthy food. Some places have a diet which is inherently healthier.

Step 5/ Don’t drink. Full stop. Alcohol distorts your body well out of proportion of it’s excessive and unnecessary calorific value .It bloats , poisons and ruins for much longer than just the time it takes to piss out of your body. There is a condition known colloquially as Pub Face whereby the cheeks bloat , the jowls sag , the eyes dull and bag whilst the chin seems to breed multiples of itself.

You don’t want to have Pub Face.

Step 5/ Don’t stop moving. Move your body as much as possible. Wake early after a good nights sleep and just .....GO ! Walk to check the surf. Surf . Walk somewhere else . Surf . Climb a hill . Do push-ups . Surf . Walk somewhere else . Do yoga . Run ....you get it ?

From waking to sleeping, just keep moving. Doesn’t have to be flat out all the time , just don’t stop.

Surfs small or shit ? Go out anyway for a paddle . Or swim the lineup. Just keep moving....

Step 6/ Rest and get good sleep. Don’t stress. This surf trip is as much for your loved ones as it is for yourself. You aren’t much good to them fat, broken or unhappy.

Step 7/ Appreciate your opportunity to do this. Appreciation is the key to happiness and happiness is the key to a good life.

A solo surf trip may seem to be too indulgent or expensive to justify to yourself or your family.

Think again. The alternative is to muddle along as you are now , never being able to make headway or gain traction in your good intentions to get fit and strong. This can drag on interminably without conclusion until one day you realise that your vigor is so long gone you wouldn’t even recognise it anymore.

The alternative is much greater medical bills or possible health failure. You think that a couple of weeks living and eating cheap whilst you literally surf your guts out is expensive ? Compare it with the price of a minor surgical process or ( God forbid ) a major , life altering circumstance arising from your poor physical state.

This isn’t an unfair comparison. If you don’t arrest your decline sooner rather than later , you WILL pay the price. Diabetes and heart disease aren’t just things that other people experience.

You probably pay the price of a surf trip each year in private health insurance. Well , here’s a truism : An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

And really, if you’re not putting a monetary value on your health, then you’re looking at a rude awakening down the track to find that it is the most expensive and valuable thing you’ll ever own. Look after it !

Step 8 / Get happy. Whilst it’s true that getting fat is fun , it’s also true that being fat is not fun. Being fit doesn’t just increase your physical health, it also increases your mental health and a strong mind is just as important as a strong body. When you are increasing fitness your moods and self esteem will elevate . You’ll enjoy life more and will probably become a better person for it. Who wants to be around a sad , self-pitying fat fuck ? Your opinion of yourself informs others about how they should treat you. Respect yourself and others are more likely to respect you. This all starts with the basics of health, fitness and vitality.

Ok, that’s enough sermonising . Good luck and get out there. Get fit , get strong , get some good waves and become the man that you picture in your mind instead of a shambling mound .

* Don’t kid yourself. Sucking your stomach in whilst wearing a wetsuit is a fool’s errand which only accentuates your rotundness. No one thinks that the manufacture of a slight void between your pigeon chest and your gunt is anything more than simultaneously sad and hilarious. Just don’t. Relax , let it hang and own it . Best for all involved.

Classic.

At the time I was living in China surfing little longboard waves basically all by myself. Had found a peaceful little corner of the world I called my own, amongst 1.4 billion people.

Had already booked flights back to Aus for late Jan 2020 to tie off some loose ends so I had no more major commitments to tend to and was free to wander for a while.

Only found out about covid when I got on the plane, a connecting flight from Paris, and the French lady next to me was wearing a mask, so I asked why.

One day I will go back and resume where I left off. I know it's still waiting patiently for me.

But I have it very good here on the SC too.

I'm right on the other side of this equation now.

Thought I was doing great, daily workouts, good clean eating, heaps of surfing and same weight as when I was 19.

Then a back injury I didn't see coming (on the second last day of 2 weeks of leave!) which has left me out of the water for 6 weeks.

Very hard to maintain fitness/workout with a back injury which means finding stuff which works.

Going to try riding a foamie this weekend before the surf gets big again and will likely be belly bogging or kneeling.

It's humbling having to go back to square one!

Don't take it for granted!

"Muscle is a liability to the body unless it is being used, so you must continually fool it into thinking you need muscle by overloading it regularly." by rooftop.

Yeah ive been on a constant diet for a few years since my meds made me gain lot of wait and since hitting 40 my metabolism is slowing down.
I used to be able to eat anything and not gain weight untill i got put on anti psych meds and hit 40 years of age.
Anyway my current diet is all super natural foods which are microwave meals for only around $4 each.
tasty meals too.
I only eat one a day occasionally a ham and cheese sandwich toasted too but not weekly maybe once a fortnight.
Anyway i feel like my physical health has degenerated and my muscles shrunk.
I havent been surfing much and the last time i did it was from a boat with a long distance paddle.
after the surf i could hardly lift myself up on the ladder and nearly fell.
Im blaming the lack of protein in my diet and lack of excersize for that..not sure how true that is.

Also i recently went to hospital for a seizure where my mouth would suck in on itself, lips sinking in i couldnt swallow even drink water or powerade, i could hardly breath unless i told myself to relax...it happened about five times in a few hours so i woke up my brother who was sleeping..we went to the local doctor who facetimed a Dr in Perth..he thought it was tetanus or maybe an interaction with my meds...i had swallowed 3 grams of magic mushrooms a couple of days before which is a light dose but they tasted like dirt so had me convinced it was the shrooms.
Anyway the doctors sent me to Geraldton hospital to have cat scans and all sorts of tests...even checked my ears which i had one ear infection (maybe the cause)...
Anyway it happened again in front of the drs in gero hospital and they were all in shock staring discussing amongst themselves.
Still to this day they didnt know what caused it maybe a seizure from getting back on the alcohol at new years and having a bender.
However since coming home i discovered it was from sucking on my vape pen too hard and too strong a dose (35mg)per ml. which made my breath suck in too rough and sound like im snoring while im awake.
However the whole time in the ambulance to gero hospital i hadn't had my vape and it kept happening..

After i left the hospital the drs released me as they had no idea what caused it and it hadnt happened in about 12 hours..so i got dropped off at the bus stop to get back and the only toilets were around the back of the ex train station behind the office. the toilets were closed until the bus was due which would be 5 hours later..
near the toilets were all these homeless indigenous people who had a shopping trolley full of emu exports so i sat and drank with them. Some seemed well educated and i wondered why they were stuck here.
Since then ive had 3 or 4 seizures similar and its definitely due to the vape juice being too strong and me huffing on it too hard.

I did my lower back around the start of covid , 2 years ago, while i was renoing my house, I dont know what caused it, but at one point it was so bad I had to sleep on the sofa in a hotel because the bed i was in was affecting my sleep. I tried to do as much as I could to try and get it sorted, - physio, xrays, gym etc, nothing really worked

anyway long story short, 2 months ago I went to Indo and within the first week of solid surfing and a couple of massages it was gone, couldn't believe it.

Hey FR, slightly different but same outcome, was outta water for months with a pinched neck nerve.
One thing that helped fitness and trimming back into shape quickly was long prone paddles on the paddleboard. Jump in the old teatree lake there and do some sets, i was doing stuff like 3 sets of 100 slow paddles, 50 medium and 25 flat out sprints, along with maybe 1 or 2 km of just distance. You can muck around with the numbers to suit you. Also jump on a boxing bag and give that a good workout. It's amazing how a few sets of 2 or 3 minutes...(hitting it hard!!) can gas you. That'll get you back to peak fitness in no time. All the best with getting back out there.

Great stuff Blowin. I’ve recently decided it would be more wise to decline the experimental “vaccine” and instead cut the alcohol from every day to special occasions with family or friends only as well as cutting refined sugars and processed food as well as surfing, swimming and moving more. Really hard at first. Feeling really, really good about this decision so far. Feeling so good all round only one month into it. Lost weight, less joint pain, more energy, better sleep, better sex and other benefits.

FR 6 wks seems to be dragging on a bit for a typical pinched nerve or bulged disk type thing, so have you had x-rays/scans and a professional assessment of it and treatment plan?

I swear by a hanging stretch I do every day, like the pic below but I have the bar only slightly above head height and my feet back behind me to fully arch my back. The effect is the same as the bottom pic but doing it hanging works better for me.

I at least go for a light walk before hand to warm up. When I ease and relax into the hanging stretch I sometimes feel a small click in my lower back right in the spot and then I know I've got it and I feel very loose after that.

groundswell, no I never got into anything like that. But I've been to a chiropractor and that's all they mostly seem to do.

I keep things really simple and don't get into any alternative or fad kind of stuff.

btw fucken hell you seem pretty psycho mate, a complete weapon, in a funny and cool way of course, but you're a real worry for yourself (unless you're taking the piss with the above).

If I was you I'd go back to the very basics of things like 3 square healthy meals a day that cover all the food groups, regular exercise including light weights and surfing, no drugs or alcohol for at least 6 months, a multivitamin and probiotic every second day, regular decent sleep, maybe read some mindfulness or other self-help kind of stuff, connect with some healthy minded people who are on track, etc.

Just some basic healthy balance in life and let your mind and body heal a bit.

But I apologise up front if I'm overstepping here.

The main thing i need to do is swim every day, its warm here i have a pool with warm water that's looked after and a groundskeeper that looks after all our gardens and lawns...also a river to swim in (with a few bull sharks)...
anyway been wasting away not exercising enough, even not surfing enough to keep fit...but theres only been one good day a week lately and im often working those days.

Not sure i can make it 3 square meals a day though, tried that with exercise and gained a lot of weight..
its my meds that cause it and my age.
Ill just have to start doing laps in my pool with regularity. Maybe eat some more steaks or biltong (the biltong here is unreal).

Best thread, and such a great antidote to these rotten Covid times.

- Blowin, thanks again for the words.
- FR, I hope you get your back in shape soon. Best of luck.
- You too, Groundy. Fark, you're hard on yourself.

Lockdown messes with me something awful, so I was chubby going into the holidays. Early Jan I made a decision to treat myself better, and shit has it paid off. A beer or two twice a week; no snacking; smaller meals and lots of veg; lots of surfing. Now I'm down to 82kg, and if I dip below 80kg I'll be stoked - hopefully there by the end of Feb.

Really getting into surfing my new obsession has helped too. One: it's a long paddle (1.5km) and generally a mission, and two: it's got me fired up and really excited.

Will weigh in and report end of Feb.

even though i only eat one meal a day i weigh 75kg and still have a beer gut...it will still be a lot of work to get rid of the gut i think. Would prefer more weight in my shoulders and pecks than my gut.
a six pack once you're past 22 years old is almost impossible imo.
stopped drinking beer yesterday too. Had 9 months off beer last year and spent $3000 on surfboards and wetsuits with the money i saved...looking forward to more things or places to go this year with the savings.

I think I said this to you before:

eat well - plenty of protein, veggies, good fats, limit sugar, alcohol, stuff in packaging

train both strength and cardio - think about functioning and being able to surf and forget about the gut.

If the gut improves by doing the above then that’s a bonus.

He needs to bring back chewing tobacco.

From what I can ascertain from watching old movies, mostly Westerns, it’s that spitting a huge squirt of tobacco juice onto the ground is an excellent way to add further exclamation to an opinion.

It’d sit well with the whole “ Y’ain’t from round here are you boy ?” Kalbarri vibe.

Hey Groundy im sure your aware and the Docs how told you how Nicotine can really fuck with your Meds?

My local gp's here in the Barri dont seem concerned about the meds and nicotine but they are only gp's.. which is why they recommend i live in Perth as there are so many good Psychiatrists in Perth.

However i refuse to go back to that almost waveless dump and we have facetime and internet now and feel there is no better time to live somewhere with good waves in mostly warm weather except for a few 0'C easterly wind days in winter...the weather here is mostly warm or at most jumper worthy which i really like and all the b grade waves mostly go unridden..also its easy to find work here.
I like it here but i also like it on the east coast so if given a chance would consider a move to Ulladulla or nowra if they have good doctors..i havent looked into that however.
Also i hear south coast nsw has been ruined with gentrification so not that keen on that.

ps the surf was shitty but worth a paddle but i swear the swell was more west than the charts had it.

You're not going to get well off meds by taking magic mushrooms.
And either reduce the nicotine content of your vape pen or throw it away, it will kill you in your sleep.

Thanks Udo i will start eating two of those meals a day then and one toasted ham and cheese sandwich for breaky from now on. Maybe also some fruit or a banana.
Does that seem about right?
about 12 green teas a day instead of 12 beers a day.(i feel green tea helps me give up the booze)

Put the fruit and bananas before your toasted sangas Grounddoggy,

Lentils, beans (not baked beans) and vegetables. Eat the rainbow of fruit and veg. Cheap nutritious and protein packed meals to get you going to surf all day.

Skip dairy, that shit is for baby cows to grow big and strong, not for humans.

It's amazing sometimes how people spend so much money and time on surfboards but then abuse their bodies, i guess we all did it at some stage when young, but really your body and mind is the most important vehicle, doesn't matter how good your board is if your body is fucked up it will hold back your enjoyment and ability..

It's actually quite sad, a few characters in the surfing scene where i live heading towards or past fifty have really abused their bodies and are pretty fucked up units, hard to see them getting past 60 or so.

I wish i could be healthier but im too lazy for gyms and crazy diets and love sugar, but im lucky in that ive always been a big fan of raw foods and fruit and vegetables and never got hooked on smoking tobacco or pot and i rarely drink alcohol these days and stay away from all drugs now (Cocaine is huge in my circle of friends too)

First surf in 6 weeks today.
Quick one banger on a foamy in uncrowded 2-3 Point/beachy wedge.

duck diving wasn't great, paddling was oK.
it was good to be in the water

I’ve just been back and read most of the thread from the start, the original post by Blowin, “Blowin’s guide to better living” is spot on.
After an extremely busy and stressful (with not a lot/enough of surfing) 2021, I took from the 22nd of Dec off and head back tomorrow. I try and maintain level off fitness throughout the year, and keep the vices in check. Bit of a flat out pot smoker, and at almost 47 the lung decline is real. Prompting me to kick this 30+ year habit…… and I love getting stoned.
The last 6 or so weeks has pretty much been out of “Blowin’s guide to better living” only at home with the family.
I’ve surfed a lot, had a workout programme, completed renovation’s, eaten healthy not drank too much and had days off, early mornings and early nights and been fishing Done a few successful strikes east and west of home and I’m heading into work tomorrow feeling physically and most importantly mentally fit not only for work but life in general.
If you are able, the work free reset, I think, should be something everyone try’s to do at some stage, and if possible before you see the bottom.
Good luck gentlemen and tear it off.
