Not really Vlocal - that is a very local issue . I was hoping for a state or national issue . Something of importance , not something that might have interrupted your surfing and stopped tourists getting a better view . A REAL issue .

I’m glad you asked hutchy, this list might explain why I have zero patience with people like you .....

Vietnam moratoriums.

Anti apartheid protests/Springboks tour.

Saving Fraser Island from sand mining. Likewise Myall Lakes.

Blockading of construction work to stop the damming of the Gordon River in Tasmania.

Protesting against French nuclear testing in the pacific ending with the sinking of Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior in a NZ port.

Sea Shepherd volunteering.

Plus an adult life of donating time and cash to various groups like ACF which has locked projects like Adani in the courts for years.

Thanks Smiley . You proved my point .

None of the above protests had any positive effects on those issues . China won the Vietnam war , you had no effect dismantling apartheid , it changed many years later , low mineral sands prices stopped the mining , you stopped Tassy having more CO2 friendly hydo and the French would have taken no notice and laughed in your face .

I saw the protest clips yesterday in passing, without sound. You had the union laity assembled as a crowd against the union organisers, and the organisers trying to shout their message, and then chaos. Projectiles were thrown, someone picked up a plastic bread tray and appeared to pitch it at the official. Next clip seemed to show the official use the megaphone as a bat to hit protestors, total carnage and a mini-Bastille of improvised domestic and bakery items.

Police line on inbound Westgate bridge, protestors just walked to other side of Fwy to get past it. Unreal.

Protest and petitions rarely do much because in most cases it's just a noisy minority opposing the views of the silent majority.

BTW. Most petitions these days online are completely pointless with the aim really being about data collecting.

I'll always been grateful to those that took a stand against the Franklin River Dam; the clearing of the daintree, logging and sand mining of Fraser and many others. so thanks to the noisy minority back then who now are the silent majority.

The views expressed above by info and hutchy about the effectiveness or otherwise of public protests are no surprise and would be commonly held by those on the right. After all why protest against the status quo of ongoing favourable outcomes as delivered by the their preferred (of and for the right) government and media (Murdoch) outlets? In fact Im struggling to remember one protest generated from the right apart from the nut jobs like Reclaim Australia and the current Anti Vax and Lockdown protests Victoria which the LNP and their media cheer squads are failing to denounce.

Others are good results but the extra carbon free energy from Franklin river dam would be pretty handy these days even with Tassie at 100% carbon free energy they could export the energy to Victoria to all the gap needed with solar and wind.

What about the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Indo? 1978 was more of a protest / march of defiance than a parade.
Probably a good thing they were successful and gay people are no longer being tossed off the cliffs in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.
Protestors and the noisy minority. pffft. What have they ever achieved.
Not to mention the Freedom Rides in 67. good protest Indo, or just noisy minority?

Decent point maybe only conservative type protest that might happen is more conservative Christian type things like anti abortion or something along those lines.

People are pissed. Protests are a sign of frustration. Majority or manority. Until leadership delivers they will continue. All discontent starts someware. Those causes need addressing or the continuing escalation of protest will rise. People finding their voices is a sign all is not well. Could this public anger which is expressed on a number issues be prevented? If so why ignore simmering tensions of public interest.

I don't like wasting my time doing anything that doesn't help a cause . Other than responding to you guys .

Please don't include protests to meet boys or girls .

Some are:
Let Them Stay, no not just the Biloela family
Marriage Equality rallies
FIGHT FOR THE BIGHT, though you'd know fuck all about that. You don't actually surf do you.
SLAM (Save Live Australia’s Music)

Will keep persisting for asylum seekers, Invasion day etc. Often these things are a slow process, but maintaining awareness for some, is a futile waste of time to cunts like you.

Hiccup - Feel free to waste your time . You seem very good at it !

On all the issues you mentioned you are doing nothing and I bet know very little .

As an example . Are you fighting for live music and protesting against lockdowns which is killing the pub industry ?

The Bight - you are referring to oil and gas exploration is expect . It has been done in Bass Straight for decades with out any problems . If done correctly ie avoiding disturbance on whales , marine life and the environment I am happy for the industry to employ workers and for Vic to not have to rely on gas from Gladstone . I bet you were against that project too as it relies on fracking to release the gas from coal seams . Lucky we didn't listen to you on that to as we would now have terrible gas shortages and super high power bills for pensioners and small business to pay .

The demonstration against nuclear energy stopped the development of the only form of power that can provide base load power 24/7 CO2 FREE .

Stop wasting your time and stuffing up our future .

Hiccup - From the Fight for the Bight web page .

"With Equinor abandoning its plans to drill in the Great Australian Bight, the immediate threat from oil exploration is gone.
The people have clearly demonstrated they want the Bight protected from oil drilling, and it is time for the Australian Government to provide permanent protection.

We call upon the Australian Government to listen, and permanently protect the unique waters of the Great Australian Bight from drilling. The next stage of the GAB Alliance campaign will be focussed on how to ensure long-term protection of this unique marine wilderness area. With your help, we will succeeed. "

The fight was about stopping the exploration ! It has now moved on to trying to stop it in the future .

I hope it is as successful as the Stop Fracking protest at Gladstone !

Great to see one or two protests that had an effect . The pay rise for nurses . Gay pride march ? Unfortunately I didn't hear that the murderers were caught . Who thinks their views changed ?

Freedom Ride 65 - Terrible that the living conditions and social problems in Aboriginal communities is now WORSE .

Invasion Day - read above .

If someone need my protection I would let them in my home and ring the police . When it was safe I would want them to leave . If they wanted to come in because they liked my home and food I would not open the door . Same rules should apply to my country , my home .

The Sri Lankan family seem nice and the community would like them to stay but they cannot . They have been proved in multiple hearings to be not refugees . They have been ordered to return to their home like so many others have . No exceptions can be made as it will set a precedent . This will then be abused and potentially cause us to have the same problems as the US is having on its southern boarder .

A pity that those protesting for freedom now are getting abused by you freedom fighters .

CO2 is also produced making solar panels , their stands and stupid wind mills .

Singing the praises of fracking? Once again Hutchy displaying a complete lack of knowledge. Cheap energy prices, revenue for Australia, clean energy, I’m still trying to work out if you’re a serial shit stirer, wilfully ignorant or just a complete dill. Everything we know about fracking in Australia is pretty much the opposite of what you are saying. Domestic prices higher than what the same gas is being sold internationally, heavily subsidised, poor economics given cost of production, little to no return for Australia and I could go on but I’ve got to go.

And as far as comparing drilling in the bight goes try deep water horizon depth but southern ocean weather, Bass straight being quit shallow by comparison. Emergency response times where also an issue.

So there was actually a bit to it. Fossil fuels are on the way out Hutchy.
