Thanks Island Bay, I'll check out the Captain Fin McCallum quads and NVS. I can purchase just the future quad rears to go with the EA side fins from the thruster set, something like QD2 3.75" which come in flat, symmetrical and 80/20. Mind you the EA side fins from a thruster set are overall "bigger" that the EA side fins from a quad set.
Checked out the Captain Fin McCallum future quads. As all fins same size, the side fins have "similar" dimensions to the rears in EA control series, i.e. the EA side fins are "bigger" than the McCallum side fins.
Checked out the Apex G10 series Bronn Quad. Very similar in both material and overall dimensions to the EA control series, both side and rear fins. No sure on the rake comparison though. Cheers IB
Someone in Geelong is selling a DS. 6’2, 19 1/2, 2 5/8. 34.5L. $370. Looks like it’s in decent condition.

Unfortunately my 6’10 DS snapped a few months ago (got caught inside an 8ft plus set, broke right on top of me), 7’6 is still going strong, as far as fins go, I found less fin the better on these boards, small rear quad 50:50 foil, or 80:20 foil, medium front fins.
Clearly my 6’10 was also great in 4ft or smaller set up as a single and side bites, widow maker style...RIP

Picked up a near new DS last weekend.
6’3 x 19 1/2 x 2 7/8. Took it out immediately. After about an hour a 25+ knot cross/offshore hit (which are the type of conditions I bought it for) and the rest of the crew called it, I stayed out and gorged myself for the next 1.5 hours. It certainly does the job in those unruly conditions.
It's an unreal chop buster.
i like those captain fins.
the tyler warren two plus one set up works a treat in my thruster. although i have ripped a fin out twice. might be the extra size and fcs1 tabs. might be bad luck hitting sandbanks...

Just playing with fin combos atm. NPJ glass quad set I have (all 4 fins similar size) went pretty damn good from the get go. Small shapers rears on the way to loosen it up a bit.
New Desert Storms being inspected and given the seal of approval by the magpies. They chortled that the colours looked great as well. A shout out to Wayne and Shanan

Finally got to give my DS a proper go yesterday. 6ft or so and onshore at one of the exposed Surf Coast reefs.
Handled the chop and lumpy conditions very well. Paddled great and really easy to get into waves. Never ridden a quad before so that will take some getting used to. Also the volume (48.5L) made duckdiving interesting. I struggled to get any depth duckdiving so got smashed on some which I'd normally get under okay.
Bnkref, did you find it had enough drive as a quad?

I’ve seen a bloke on a step up length DS during a couple of north coast point break surfs this this winter. It looked a little ‘‘Boatie’ to my eye. It could’ve just been his board, it really looked like a thick chunk of a thing, that appeared too much for the wave size and his capable ability.
Does anyone else have this experience or are they still fairly refined for less than proper solid waves? Is it the sort of board that you just take out when it’s macking?
My 7'6" is a pretty serious piece of equipment. Thats a board I'm reaching for when it's 8-10ft and I want to catch a set wave. I rode the wave of my life on it during the Black Nor-easter swell in June 2016.
my 6'6" is much lighter, easier to throw around and still has amazing paddle power. Very fun board in anything from 4ft up. Handles clean 6-8ft surf easy.
so I'd say the answer to that question is : depends.
AndyM, it was my first time surfing it (aside from 2 muckaround surfs in ankle to knee high waves) and first time on a quad, so it was all completely new to me. On a couple when I found the sweetspot on the waves it took off like a rocket.
Solitude - mine felt boaty sitting up on it and duckdiving but my normal shortboard volume is 31-32L and 6'6 step up is 35L so it was a huge increase in volume for me. Will take some getting used to but first impressions are good.
Mate has a 6'8 DS (which is about 42/43L) which feels a fair bit more refined than mine. Looks and pretty much feels like a normal step up. Just a touch more solid.
how big is yours Bnkref?
FR mine is 6'10, 20 1/2, 3 1/8. 48.5L.
Freeride - thanks mate. Depends makes sense. Those two boards really are for different things and it does sound as though your 6'6 is ideal for decent DOH point surf that many people (myself) would be taking their step up out for anyway. The big board must make you feel confident for when it gets serious.

One thing about the DS is that it's an excellent chop slayer. I sometimes ride my 6'10 in only 4ft waves, if there's devil wind.
If it's a good, solid day, I might ride my 6'3 Ghost or my 6'10 DS, depending on my mood. It can feel so good with all that rail and volume and power - like swinging a big broadsword.
What I'm trying to say is that it can be the perfect board, even if you think you'd be totally overgunned.

Totally agree IB, I surfed my 6’6 in glassy powerful 6 foot waves and it was perfect. You can hit the lip, carve, catches waves like a dream. So good
I have a 6'6 DS x 20 1/2 x 3 about 43 L
I have only had it out in 3-4 foot Dbah just to get a feel for it and it was Unreal!!! felt like I'd ridden it for years on my first surf. Turned nicely, super responsive and paddled like a dream. My normal board range is 35-38 L ( I'm 93kgs ) and I was able to duck dive the DS with ease. I am super confident to take this out in 6ft+ when we get some real swell.
