New Victoria restrictions

Just watched the press release from Dan Andrews and I really feel for how victorians are going to once again pay for others stupidity. Not sure how they are going to police the 1 hour exercise policy but a trip down the coast for a surf could be costly. I understand these new restrictions are mainly Melbourne suburbs and I’m very grateful for where I live NSW Qld border. When we were in shutdown there was no time limit for our exercise thank god as a 3 hour surf kept me sane after losing my job.

Freeride - There’s all kinds of weird price distortions happening when city crew relocate to the regions. I reckon they search for houses in the small town locations using the pricing metric they’ve brought with them from the over priced areas they are leaving.

Example- There’s a house down the street from me which sold recently . The house next door to it has been on the market for a couple of years at $850K before being reduced to $800 ONO - it still won’t sell. The house across the road from this went for $650K a couple of years ago and we thought it was overpriced.

Back to the first house I was discussing and the city crew who just bought it paid $2.55M for it ! Sure , it had a decent reno done on it but by any measure the buyers overpaid by at least $1.5M . Any measure except the mindset they brought with them from their previous location which made $2.55M seem reasonable.

It’s patently fricken crazy. A large scale version of the Aussie who pays $20 for a rip off Billabong shirt in Kuta cause the same shirt in Australia would have cost them $50.

It’s obscene and it destroys any chance the local young crew have of competing on price for a house in their home town.

One thing that has always thrown me about moving to smaller towns is the predominantly white Australia populace.

I'm what you would call a white Aussie myself, and am not self loathing, but I do highly value the multi-culturalism of Australian cities, particularly Melbourne.

I think the Betoota Advocate nailed it quite well in this one:

Mate at Ewingsdale got $250,000 more than he anticipated , he then brought land in Mullumbimby , 40 blocks of stage 2 sold out in less than 2 days , people were offering $40,000 more than he paid 3 days later , can’t build for 18 months until infrastructure is laid. The long time vacant blocks in my world with sold signs on them have all had surveyors crawling all over them . Whoever bought them are not waiting around to develop them.. And they'e not locals ..according to estate agents boasting about the sales .
And yeah the younger locals around are finding it hard to secure a block/house ,,priced out
I,m really off smarmy Sydney siders at the moment ,the numbers have increased significantly, They don't realise how arrogant and pretentious they are , or maybe they do and just don't give a faark. I don't care , either way , go fuck yourselves.

This whole realestate boom is so unexpected, back in March we were all trying too predict how much property was going to drop by.

I know it's a city to regional/coast areas shift, but it's something none of us saw coming.

Im sure even media articles back in March were making big calls on the drops we will see.

It just goes to show the so called experts when it comes to real estate or the economy and predictions rarely seem to get things correct.

It’s not over yet , Indo.

We are currently existing in suspended animation as far as our economy is concerned. The mass immigration tap has been turned off and half the population is on government handouts.

Will the handouts sufficiently overlap the resumption of the Ponzi scheme long enough to keep this lead balloon afloat ?

What’s going to happen when the next layer of the pyramid scheme - freshly imported from the backstreets of Mumbai and Nepal - dont earn enough from driving Ubers to even qualify for the loans required to ensure the house prices spiral ever higher ?

What’s going to happen when the Australian 3rd wave of COVID brought about by the inevitable fuck ups of international “ student “ and “ skilled “ migrant quarantine cause Scomo to face a full speed retreat from his plans to continue fire hosing warm bodies into our economy ?

If you think it’s all good behind Scomo’s smirk then ask yourself why they’ve just removed the responsible lending obligations from the banks. Or why they’re soon going to push for complete access to superannuation for new home buyers ( at least ) .

This ain’t over by a long shot.

I'd be happy to see Melbourne people at the beach or wherever. No issue in the water as they dont surf as well and spending money in cafes etc helps the community.

You're making shit up again billythekid. When did the fake roadblocks happen again? This idea of locals "slagging off anyone they don't recognise in the water" is a fantasy. Slagging off doesn't happen that often and when it does, the spark is someone's poor behaviour, not how recognisable they are. Stop posting crap.

Have to say it's been a solid bounce back here in Melbourne.

Around where I live it's packed, bars/cafes/restaurants all well very occupied. Lots of people out and about and enjoying the outdoors. The council/state gov al fresco initiative works really well and has given the place a new life. They've eaten into street parking spaces and re-purposed them as dining areas, works quite well.

Pretty much the most stark of a contrast imaginable to a few weeks ago.

Unbelievable that we're on track to have less active cases than NSW soon, and getting less daily cases (inc. community transmission). Can't say I saw it coming, or had faith we'd get here.

VL the fake roadblock happened after covid first hit. I saw it. At entrance to winky bells. It wasn't council or VicRoads who put the barriers there. I even heard a local middle aged wanker loudly talking shit that non Torquay residents were going to be fined.. And I witnessed a guy at Bells ask a mate where he was from around the same time. Parochial bogan bullshit. If you got out and surfed more instead of prancing about in lycra and judging everyone you would have noticed this too. Or maybe not, since your a parochial bogan

As far as letting the virus rip - time will tell whether saving some lives was worth impoverishing others. But yeah, maybe I'm wrong. Feel better?

Yep much lower uptake of the outdoor mask mandate this time around, large majority of people I see out and about walking have the mask around their chin at best. I hang mine around my neck, slip it up if I head indoors, it's an over-kill requirement outside considering it's all contained at this stage. I'll take my chances that I'm ok going maskless up at the park on the other side of town to where the cases have popped up....

Sheepdog - Gladys/NSW did a targeted lockdown of a particular area, allowing majority of businesses to stay open. She didn't shutdown the entire state for a cluster that they have now managed to get down to zero for 30 straight days. So yeh if you want to compare, she was amazing compared to the blunt force used in Vic. Even WA & Qld used a more targeted lockdown approach than Vic.

And your comparison of case numbers shows where most peoples heads are at when it comes to this. Is it about deaths or just case numbers? I mean for you if it is about case numbers, then still Gladys and her mgmt of this shits all over Dan in her management of it when you look at how many cases NSW has had in 12 months vs Vic, how many returned travellers they have brought in vs Vic, and how many deaths they have had vs Vic, so you're up shit creek in your defence of Dan either way. Well done.

Pretty easy when Avalon is on a peninsula, and not next to the 2nd biggest airport in the middle of the burbs. If the vic cluster was in eg Sorrento, on Mornington peninsula, that would be a lot easier to deal with. So your comparison to not look at all the variables, including geography, shows where most peoples heads are at when it comes to this. (see what I did there :) .. ).
You also have to include deaths around Australia thanks to the ruby princess, and NSW allowing passengers to spread covid ALL OVER AUSTRALIA.

"Pretty easy when Avalon is on a peninsula, and not next to the 2nd biggest airport in the middle of the burbs..."

totally agree, across the world basic geographies are totally overlooked for cheap political points

which raises the question...

again...

why such strong resistance to this...

"The health experts, as opposed to the govt and media classes, have been calling for remote quarantine for how long? well since the pandemic started ... if this doesn’t happen now the country has learnt nothing when the next pandemic hits .... carry on"

the resistance is totally illogical, one or two fuck ups, you could defend these positions, but now, it's just become a joke. like all contemporary politics, it seems no one is capable of self reflection, regardless of the side. is it reluctance to be seen as 'backflipping'? and the media / public backlash?

my lecturer used to make this point how 'backflipping' on policy is seen to be a big nasty no go, to be avoided at all costs. when really, it is a sign of growth, and being open to new 'evidence' and ways

is it pride? ...hubris? ...bigger forces at work?

Dx3's picture

Dx3 Tuesday, 16 Feb 2021 at 1:45pm

Ahhhh sheepdog, was wondering when you'd bring out the 'what about the feds' line. Right on cue.

I'll make myself really clear - I do not care one bit for Morrison and his utterly useless government, the bloke is a do-nothing smirking prick who seriously needs to get called out for just how little he actually does. Does that make me a rabid Dan Andrews fan then? No. Why? Because this isn't a fucking footy match and anyone who cheers on their 'team' is a genuine idiot. You can support a government whilst still being critical of them. It's actually better for all of society if you don't lap up everything your 'team' does like a little bitch, that helps them be made accountable.

Yeh the feds manage a lot of aged care, in many states not just in Victoria. Only in Vic did it end up catastrophic in terms of death numbers.

As for the strain of virus... WA & Qld had a leak of this strain. 1 case per state, that's it. NSW are also taking in more travellers, some of whom have this strain, no leaks of it to date, hopefully stays that way.

And you can cherry pick the Avalon cluster if you like and say it's geography helped, it probably did, but NSW have had other clusters along the journey, and none resulted in a statewide lockdown like Victoria did. End of the day, they manage it better up there, there is actually no disputing this unless you're a bit simple and just want to keep barracking for your team

Dx3's picture
Dx3's picture
Dx3 Tuesday, 16 Feb 2021 at 1:58pm

Also I should add, everywhere manages it better than Vic. Not just NSW. Every state & territory has managed this whole thing better than Vic.

To Dan's credit, finally today we are hearing of something resembling a plan or course of action to improve how we manage returned travellers by way of moving them out of the most populated areas of the state. This isn't about shunting them out to the regions, it's about designing and building genuine quarantine facilities that will work better than a tourist hotel in the CBD. It's never too late to start this, so whether it's a covid benefit or the next pandemic that comes along, they'll be used I'm sure. It seems this latest outbreak is finally the straw that's broken the camel's back.

Saw they had some proposal for self contained little cabins out near the aiport but in a open paddock type area.

That would make complete sense, close to airport open area but realistic not out in whoop whop..

But the problem is nothing happens quickly in Australia, would take a while just to get approvals and then if they dont already have them who knows how long to get built but I'm sure longer than needed, and then you can bet there will be all kinds of other crap go down, like blow out cost or design flaws, or people will complain of the quality or some BS.

Most FK ups have been completely preventable, this time Dan said it was gold standard but a nebuliser was allowed to be used greatly increasing risk and mask not up to standard were also not used, so really its more like bronze standard.

Nobody could guarantee this proposal will be built and ready for use in time to manage the current pandemic, but that does not mean it shouldn't be done. Any action is better than none, at least it's a step in the right direction IMO. Build it, and whilst it's being built, work through the mechanics of how it would operate in terms of staffing, medical facilities etc.
