How The Prodigy covered L7's 'Fuel My Fire' not knowing that it was ripped off from 'Lost Cause' (legally so, L7 and Cosmic Psychos used to tour together).

So when it came time for The Prodigy to pay royalties, they flowed, not to L7, but to Walsh, Knight, and Jones.

And in that vein...neck a pinger and get on the dancefloor.

I heard about it from this doco. It's a good one peeps, L7, Mudhoney & Eddie Vedder relate a few stories.

love that bauhaus single....i remember buying it at phantom records on pitt street in 1982. it has a great cover, so good that a girl stopped my as i was walking home through surry hills and asked about the record. i miss those days...if you saw another person dressed in black you would just walk up to them and say "hi, want to get high and go burn shit in the parking lot?"

re the gig lineup - Blowfly, I'm guessing that one was '93, maybe a Big Day Out sideshow? I'm pretty sure it didnt come to Bris that year, so bands did sideshows in Bris, and one was Beasts of Bourbon, Mudhoney and Iggy Pop. I was spewing, too young to get in, so went and sat outside Festival Hall to take it all in anyway - awesome.

But then a week or so later was Sonic Youth, Disposable Heroes... and Screamfeeder - it was all ages so I was there. I remember it was the night of the first day back at school year 12. I was a bit perplexed about Disposable Heroes on the bill, but man, they were awesome, ended up being fully into it. The other lead singer (not Franti) was frequently smashing this massive chain onto some sound system thing, the noise was amazing. Great gig, Sonic Youth obviously awesome too

another great lineup I recall, but a Festival, was that Summersault Festival 96 at Goldy, that was an epic day

It's so weird Udo, it's like 25 years has passed and it hasn't, at the same time. Look at a hi-po thruster for example. My fav Nick Cave song will always be "Release the Bats."

Wow blowfly, that would have been a very cool performance to see. Was he a bit more underground than the big acts? A smaller venue? I've only just seen that myself so am completely new to Leo.

Being a finger picking guitarist (or imitation of one) and having a much more talented son who also finger picks rather than with a plectrum, I've noted similarities and differences in our styles. I will use the thumb for E and A, then one finger per string until the thin E string; my son is similar but a bit more free in how he will adapt the middle three fingers. If you want to imagine a sound, he can nail Mark Knopfler's finger picking style on "Sultans of Swing" then head off into his own impromptu versions of it, right down to the percussive picking.

Leo is something else again. It's intense, a full on energy through the 12 string, complex backing notes and maybe he's on an open tuning. He has a thumb pick? And will use the thickest three strings as baselines. Very, very interesting and sounds good. No need for backing band. Then the voice... wow.

Any concert observations welcomed - this site is awesome in the stories it gets us to share.

At that time I think the only people who would have been aware of him were doublej listeners so it was a nice small room. I didn't actually play at the time so I wasn't really into the technicalities of his style but was blown away by the whole effect, the richness and complexity of his 12 string playing and that great voice.
When I started learning guitar I tried finger picking but I could never get it to synch with my singing so I went to a plectrum and a more percussive style. I never had the ability to be ambitious in that direction but it has been a great hobby over the years and I have had the good fortune to play with some really good musos who were also good mates. I still write a lot of songs and play for an hour or two most days. I'd say it keeps me sane but I'm not sure the evidence is there to support it!

Thank you for the anecdote, it sounds like a treasured experience. Keep up the songwriting and playing, I find I've been listening more in recent years than playing as someone greater has developed... it's been nice to whack the guitar on the bass pedal and try to keep up!

This one is a similar complex melody through picking on open tunings, a bit more contemporary and was shown to me by my son, who then spent a couple of months chasing how to get the sound. Nice clip, too:

Very cool track. Funny that you are listening more, I am listening a lot less and have gone all classical when I do. I think it's the times, they seem to favour that grandeur that classical delivers. A great version of a Mozart gem.

I listen to tons of classical music myself. More than any other really. My wife is an accomplished classical pianist so I love nothing more than drifting off for a nap when she's practicing.

Perhaps devolve was not the right word Mr. Facto but classical music is a bit thin on the ground in this thread and probably rightly so as I think it originally started as Ben looking for new or previously overlooked tunes.
