New Victoria restrictions

Just watched the press release from Dan Andrews and I really feel for how victorians are going to once again pay for others stupidity. Not sure how they are going to police the 1 hour exercise policy but a trip down the coast for a surf could be costly. I understand these new restrictions are mainly Melbourne suburbs and I’m very grateful for where I live NSW Qld border. When we were in shutdown there was no time limit for our exercise thank god as a 3 hour surf kept me sane after losing my job.

Oh haaaaaaaaiiiiiiii boys, Gary's been lurking quietly but he's still out there watching.

It's true that Gary generally lives in the city so he can expose himself to the most possible eyeballs per square km, but Gary was en vacance with family as things went sideways in Vic and has spent the last couple of months trying to keep his glorious rig in shape in the land of Coopers, Serial Killers, and Farmers' Union Iced Coffee.

Gary can't really put his finger on it but he feels an affinity with the mid-coast in SA.

Gary misses his usual haunts though and will return in good time.

Massive thank you for those who have done their part to reduce the spread of this virus. If the ocean and the waves have been missing for a long time, hang in there, the first contact with the water will be amazing, the first wave to glide past will be very special. It's coming, but also a time when other state borders will be open to you as there is a very low chance of the virus being spread and increasing.

Question: did you get the pool back, and have you been able to body bash in the time since the early lockdown stuff? Hope you did, and wish you well.

Being in the lockdown compared to the rest of Oz, it's like having been on another planet - and Melbourne crew probably have a further degree compared to us in regions.

You blokes want to know why the ALP will get back in in Victoria? Have a look at the Liberal Party. What a shit show. They got their arses kicked at the last election and they are seriously thinking about replacing their nobody leader with the klutz that got flogged last time. The Liberal Party has been taken over by religious nutters and they keep throwing up genuinely pathetic candidates. A shed load of them were kicked off the team due to racist, homophobic and bigoted social media posts during the last campaign.
They've spent the entire pandemic whinging and carrying on, demanding fewer and fewer social distancing rules.
Yes hotel quarantine is a mess but most Victorians know we'd be in a much worse position if the idiots in the Liberal Party were in charge.
And one more thing, the hotel quarantine in Vic was not much different to NSW. Yes the ADF played a role in Sydney but there was still a soldier knobbing people in quarantine. There was still private security and many of them worked multiple jobs with zero protection. It was pure luck Vic had an outbreak before NSW,

We will have another federal election (9/22) before the next Victorian election (11/22).

By 9/22 high unemployment, falling house prices, negative interest rates and the prime marketer's debt and deficit disaster will be front of mind even for those who last saw the last of their treasured free franking credit Howard era largesse cash in late 2020. Plus two more summers of the east coast ablaze with bushfires and the world wide economic fallout of a Republican Party not accepting defeat in later 2020 and Nth America spiralling down down to deal.....

The Victorian hotel quarantine saga by then will be long forgotten and/or the blame rightfully placed as the feet of the god fearing speaking in tongues Slow-mo for not accepting quarantine is and has always been a Federal Govt responsibility, true the Constitution says so!

So, as VL was saying the ALP are a shoe in at the next election .... Load up, put your house on it but gamble responsibly.

But I wonder if he’d have been less stringent and more expedient if compelled to face the voters much earlier than Nov 2022.

Fixed four year terms were vaunted as the means for pollies to put short sighted politics aside and look to the long term.

Here in Vicco, for better or worse, that theory’s been borne out.

@Blowfly

I just outlined why i turned my back on labor, i was voting on a perception of what the parties are and not actual policy. ideals etc

Technically I'm now voting for all the right reasons, but yeah when i was young and on the dole people said your best voting for labor for the best money etc plus you just followed the heard either Greens or Labor. (i voted Greens when i first started voting)

The best thing that every happened for me though was Howard making it harder to bludge on the dole it motivated people like me to get off my arse and really seek work, it was the nudge that we needed after being trapped in the system and by then there was also much more jobs as the economy had picked up. (BTW. i wasn't alone, i was living on the Goldie and all mates started really looking for work and for a while it seemed like everyone was on the dole but then everyone started getting jobs)

BTW. When i finished school it was at the peak of the recession and even if i wanted a job or apprenticeship it would have been super hard to get especially in coastal areas, i was happy surfing, partying and traveling (two six month trips living in a kombi between Vic to Cairns & Vic to Noosa most of that time spent between Crescent to the Goldie) even did my first Indo trip on the dole thanks to some cash work.

I don't really vote based purely on money even if i joke i do, id probably be better off voting for Labor if i did as im not on a high income, i could earn much more than what i do if i worked another 10-15 hours a week or employed someone (which i use too but just found it more of a hassle more paper work, tax, less flexibility etc) but im quite comfortable i have a house near the beach almost paid off, few properties in Indo and a good work life balance.

As it is the whole system IMHO is pretty generous to society, education, childcare, but im sure Labor would give more handout's or make it more generous.

The way i look at it id rather the LNP be in power but when they aren't the likely hood of extra hand outs with labor is always there, i guess that's my way of looking for positives in negatives..

blowfly's picture
blowfly's picture
blowfly Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 8:56am

So, having done pretty well out of Labor's policy of maintaining welfare payments above the poverty line, you now prefer to drop them below that level. Hypocritical doesn't even begin to describe your thinking. What you seem to have forgotten (or just couldn't give a shit about) is that not all welfare recipients are footloose young blokes who can pick up enough cash work here and there to maintain their standard of living. Many welfare recipients are in difficult situations trying to feed their families, keep a roof over their heads and maintain some dignity while living below the poverty line. Your suggestion that the system is "pretty generous" is about right if you are middle class, have a decent income and no compunction about exploiting all the middle class welfare options available. If you are out of work in a regional area with hundreds of applicants for any jobs that do come up, the system is very very far from generous.

So Indo why do you preference libs over labs? Is it just because you think the labs provide more welfare/handouts? Is that the only reason?

For the record I've been of voting age for nearly 30 years but I've never cast a vote, neither state nor federal.

The discussions on here have me thinking I might vote just to preference labs over libs... lib corruption / handouts-for-mates is starting to stick out like a sore thumb as opposed to the labs. Federally I'm talking about.

VicLocal and others defending Labor, genuine questions here below as you love to go on the attack with the Libs, but can barely mutter a word against Dan A and his mob in this state.

Are you content with how Labor have handled themselves at the inquiry? Are you satisfied that none of them appeared to know what was going on, or they did know and they are just lying? In which case I'm unsure what's worse.

In your response, please do your absolute best to not respond with "yeh but what about the Feds, what about this, what about anything else that doesn't answer the question"

I ask this question as someone who voted Labor last state election, and someone who thinks the Vic Libs are an embarassment, I've said this before on this site. It is entirely possible to be a Labor voter and still think they have been a pack of lying cunts this year, or if not lying they are just inept & collecting a massive paycheck without knowing what's going on in their portfolios (looking at your Mikakos).

I also ask these questions with this thought in mind: Anyone can lock down the state for months to get cases down. That's the easy part to get on top of the virus. But can you protect the state as every other state has with strong plans in place once we open up?? That's the real test, at which point it's in my opinion our state government is the countries biggest fail in the history of Australia.

Vic Local's picture
Vic Local's picture
Vic Local Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 10:02am

Indo, It's pretty obvious what you think a "handout" is. government payments to people on low incomes. eg unemployed people or pensioners
Indo, are the following government handouts? $30mil to a Liberal Party donor for a $3 mil block of land. Billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, Endless untendered contracts ending up in the hands of Liberal Party mates. $440 mil to some shonk for security on Manus Island. Billions to aged care and child care providers (with a shit load going to Dutton's missus). The billions in middle class welfare payments handed out by Howard. Billions going to well-off pensioners in the form of franking credit rebates for tax they never played in the first place.
Personally, I'd rather my taxes help some single mum put food on the table than allow some corrupt liberal party donor afford another super yacht.

Zen, The reality is, some people will always take advantage of the dole, but they make up a very small percentage of those receiving it. Estimated at 10%.
The last figure I saw about jobs advertised to people looking for work is 1:13. So while I'm not keen on funding lazy fuckers going on Indo-style road trips, I don't want to punish the 90% of people who get the dole and want to work.

I would , Zen.

Make it a Voluntary deal.

Give a year of national service then get a year on a guaranteed minimum income. That would be a great plan for our youth. We would have a steady stream of young crew ready to learn a skill and serve the community which would also create a stronger bond with our national community. Make them feel a part of something. Give them a sense of what nationhood actually means - that we are in it together as a society by contributing to projects which benefit the greater good. Then they had a year to roam the nation as they see fit and find their place without the threat of destitution and societal pressure to have a job hanging over their heads.

I reckon you’d have way more productive young people relocate to the regional areas after they’ve had a year to find somewhere they like and settle in and meet people which leads to employment down the track. It’d also help divorce young people from the idea that you have to go to Uni if they found a job they liked and were good at whilst they had the security of guaranteed income.

Let the youth be free and let them prosper. Consider it seed money.

I actually see it as a form of community service / sacrafice. If you can live a relatively healthy (non depressed) life on the dole through times where there is little prospect for employment, without being a burden on other services, ...good for you... go for it...

better than all those small business scammers cooking their books to keep their healthcare cards and the like whilst leading 100s of $1000 lifestyles

I agree Vic, it was a rhetorical question and Dude, I think your idea has merit.

Welfare is such a hard thing to administer- how do you target those that need it the most? How do you withhold it from those who need it the least?

An important question is (and all things being equal) how much do you pay a person to keep them out of poverty, to lead a relatively dignified existence but not take away the incentive to improve themselves either through getting a job, training or education?
