6'4 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/4. Should complement my 6'10 DS and 7'6 Spartan.

Still working up the courage to order a 9'0 DS.

I know, Andy...

There's this bombie just around the corner here, though, that gets very very good about 5 times a year. Oh, and an incredible wave magnet on the east coast. Time to do it before I'm too ancient, or just abandon the plans.

($760 base cost. $40 extra for full spray. 5 fin Futures, and solid glass job. Bargain)

Yeah you gotta do it while you’re able, and the funds are there.
Straightforward paddle out then?

Yep, no duck diving unless caught inside. Not like big Point :-(

Still, scary enough at size, with a tricky takeoff.

Showed Webby a video. He reckoned it looked like Waimea - with a longer wall.

Edit: not made of money. Reckon with buying and selling I spend $1000 a year on boards. Surfing is cheep as chips as obsessions go :-)

Bnkref, I'm the beneficiary of that 6'6! Been scouting gumtree for weeks for one and great to see one pop up 15 mins away in the exact length I was looking for.

Will let you know how it goes, looks a treat! Hoping to head up to the Hunter this weekend to have a dig in some good sized surf (For me at least), keen!

It was pretty exxy (considering webbys are fairly cheap as mentioned by IB) but it was in the length I wanted and the guy gave me 50 off, probs would've been hard to justify not getting new otherwise.

So unfortunately the weekend didn't go quite as planned and for the majority was surfing 3ft end-to-end closeouts. However, there was a brief period where the swell was 3-4ft and the tide combination was fixing the closeouts. In this fleeting moment I got a taste of what the DS is capable of.

Amazing board. It honestly felt comical how easy it was to paddle into waves. I was surprised to feel the weight shifting in just the right way through the full sequence of paddle to cruising down the line. I'm a tall fella (6'6) so a fair few of my boards have length and volume - this board isn't strictly a step up for me, yet it was paddling better than any of them, including my 7'0. Admittedly none of my other boards have ever been popular surfboard models so part of this could just be my excitement with a well designed surfboard.

I noticed the cushioned "suspension" mentioned here and it had plenty of drive with the quad setup. I was also sceptical of the pulled in rails (as mentioned by udo) although didn't notice the difference, in fact probably for the better to keep the volume down for duck-diving.

Really keen to see how it handles when I've got bigger surf and a better bank behind me.

Hey udo, I jumped on that DS and bought it this morning. Mint condition.

Thanks a heap for posting here as I never look on Gumtree. Hope Huey sends you some bombs!

Even got a really good surf in down that way after collecting the board.

Itching to get the DS out in the water. Serious board.

Wax job came with it. Like throwing in leather seats or something. My wax jobs would look embarrassing compared to that.

How do people go duckdiving on these boards? My next biggest board is a 6'6 (approximately 35 litres) which I can duckdive fine with. Big step up to 48 litres.

I seem to be able to get a wax job like that with sex wax pretty easily.
But that's a good wax job for vicco anyway.
Usually the soft wax for down there just ends up like a big wax cake traction pad.

I think my DS is 43 litres or so.

It’s good for duck dives. Goes down well and shoots you out the other side. Actually come up with momentum most times so you can escape the impact zone easier.

Have to hold on pretty tight sometimes when you’re under and it’s bigger surf. Lot of volume with a mind of its own where it wants to go.

If you hang on you know you won’t be down for long.

I got a new DS 6'5" x 19 7/8" x 2 3/4" 39L a few months ago and finally got to use it in some good quality 4-5ft waves over Yorkes SA. This is a step up board for me as my regulars are McCoy Nuggets under 6' but similar volume. The difference though being more of the volume is in the back half of the board compared with the DS.
After a couple of waves on the DS I felt really comfortable paddling into some steep ones and it never let me down. It felt solid down the line but I was also able to turn it up the face pretty easy when needed. I am stoked with it.
New price with a rail spray was $740 and if i had bought another McCoy it would have been $500 more than that. The DS wont get used as much as it will be saved for the bigger days so the price as well was a big incentive.

Hah, 3 fins on a Nugget is plenty of fin area providing drive as they are bigger than on most other thruster set-ups! Should have mentioned that I also got my DS with a thruster set-up.

Good to hear PeteH. I bought a DS about a month ago but still haven't got it wet. I'm Vicco based now but from SA originally so am pleased to hear it did the trick at Yorkes. Looks like it's been on there a fair bit lately.

Hey Stu, in response to how can a 6’4 be the same model as a 10’6, I think the main defining features of the DS are rounded V to spiral V and very soft and full forward rails, to a fine rail in the tail. I have a 6’10 and a 7’6, both boards have wide sweet spots, ignore chop, carve really well and pivot and turn much easier than their dimensions would suggest. They don’t seem to require adjustment they just go, and often make sections, drops or barrels that I didn’t expect to make. I believe the V to spiral V is much better for average surfers than concaves.

As far as I know it is a vee with a shallow concave scooped out either side of the stringer. The vee lets you get on a rail and the concave gives a bit of squirt was how it was described to me.

drodders's picture
drodders's picture
drodders Saturday, 4 Jul 2020 at 6:09pm

That’s it Fliplid, actually on my 6’10 DS and on a NPJ quartet that I have, the concaves in either panel of the V are really deep. The other thing the V allows is a flatter rocker to turn like a deep concave board with lots of rocker, but with lazy straight line speed, hence better for the average surfer.

Island Bay's picture
Island Bay's picture
Island Bay Sunday, 5 Jul 2020 at 12:14pm

This average surfer concurs - in terms of how the DS surfs.

But the deep single concave, ultra knifey rails, and substantial rocker on my Bourton Reef Swallow seem to also make me quite excited :-)
