The BBC's 6 part series on the Spanish Civil War, made perhaps in the late 1970s, before that institution became hopelessly partisan. It's as well balanced a presentation as you will see of the widening political divide, momentous events, initially farcical combat, then increasingly serious and deadly results.

The divisions between the Republicans, caught between monarchy and chaos, the socialists, the anarchists; and the more traditional landowners, church and military will be seen. While the Republican government tries to make it all work, it will be Franco (with his moorish division) who prevails, leaving great bitterness for more than a generation.

https://thefederalist.com/2020/06/02/media-falsely-claimed-violent-riots...

It’s a shit house state of affairs when the vast majority of the MSM is flat out lying to the world and not only do they not get called on it , but the result of their continued gas lighting is that people now want to believe the lies and are willing to overlook the fact that most of their opinion is based on lies.

When the lies are revealed, the population just covers their ears and waits impatiently for the next two minutes of hate.

@Blowin,

The Federalist defence has already been proven as horeshit.

“No tear gas was used, and no rubber bullets were used,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters Wednesday, echoing similar claims from the U.S. Park Police and the president’s allies.

McEnany was correct, but only to the extent that police did not use products labeled “tear gas” and “rubber bullets.”

The Park Police acknowledged firing “pepper balls,” a projectile munition that lofts irritant powder into the air, and “smoke canisters” to scatter the crowd Monday.

So it's technically correct that tear gas wasn't used - hooray Donald, take a bow The Federalist - but instead they used a chemical irritant and smoke cannisters, and that's all good!

We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society."

That ain't Caeser the No Drama Llama talking but General James Mattis, who Trump appointed as Secretary of State.

And on the motivation to protest:

"It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation."

"When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside."

It’s about how in the context of hyper partisan politics the losers of elections don’t let those that win govern cleanly and how the constant white anting of the opposition is creating further divisions in society. Republicans treatment of Obama was cited as an example.

Now if they said spend $50k and we'll give you $25k then the uptake would be much larger and the money would go more towards your small construction businesses/tradie set ups rather than to the larger businesses and architects that will jump on the gravy train like they did last time when Kevin Dudd splashed some cash around for the building industry.

'Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu tendered as evidence in whacko-right conspiracy'

The “rising movement” of whacko conspiracy theorists in Australia — the whole QAnon, shape-shifting lizards stuff — has found a new recruit in Josephine Cashman, and the mainstream right has a new embarrassment.

In the past few days, Cashman has sent out a storm of tweets alleging that the sinister international global conspiracy is manifested in Australia by… the success of Bruce Pascoe’s book Dark Emu.

Remember Josephine Cashman?

The top end Indigenous businesswoman and former prosecutor found brief fame last year during the all-out assault on Pascoe and Dark Emu by the conservatoriat.

Cashman provided Andrew Bolt with a letter which purported to be from Yolngu elder Terry Yumbulul attacking Pascoe as a fabulist. Yumbulul denied he had written the letter; Cashman claimed she had written it “for” him.

At the same time, Cashman fell out with onetime mentor Marcia Langton, and Black Inc. publisher Morry Schwartz, both of whom were on the board of Cashman’s Indigenous bootstrapping Big River Impact foundation, after Cashman made wild allegations about organised crime in Indigenous groups and launched her attacks on Pascoe (who is published by Black Inc.).

Schwartz (disclaimer: he is a publisher of mine, one of the lucky ones, who actually got a book) has a soft spot for “iconoclastic” Indigenous leaders — practical business types, none of your abstract theorising and wigging out spectacularly,

Cashman has certainly been hard-headed and dewigging in the past 48 hours, putting out a blizzard of tweets about Dark Emu, Schwartz and… George Soros, of course.

This tweet serves as a summary of the torrent:

Yes, Cashman is going dank emu, getting into the international Soros conspiracy.

Her near continual stream of tweets yesterday repeats the familiar charge that the protests in current US unrest are being paid for by Soros, through Antifa, that the Chinese Communist Party is involved and much much more.

Cashman’s Australian twist appears to be that the publication of Dark Emu, and kids’ version Young Dark Emu, is part of the global conspiracy, Schwartz apparently working hand in glove with his 17th cousin, George ‘Schwartz’ Soros.

Call it what it is. This is anti-Semitism from the lower depths, and with an extra twist straight out of the playbook: that Jews are manipulating simple black people for their own nefarious ends.

That idea has the distinction of being deployed by both the KKK and the Nation of Islam in the past. Cashman’s flurry of tweets on this matter and her conviction that Dark Emu is central to a global conspiracy suggests an… erm… manic enthusiasm for her new found political faith.

Will her onetime champions, especially Andrew Bolt, now call her out on it?

Don’t hold your breath. Bolt sailed pretty close to the wind, during the Abbott government’s 18C review, after he accused Jewish community peak bodies of ingratitude and disloyalty to him when they backed retention of the law. (Heh, you know who else accused the Jews of disloyalty?)

Mind you, a lot of the Likudnik-dominated peak bodies are pretty slow to call out anti-Semitism on the mainstream right, as manifested in the writings of, for example, Nine political editor Chris Uhlmann.

Their support for Israel is too important to squander on the remorseless spread of old-skool anti-Semitism on the global “respectable” right.

Meanwhile for the right, Cashman is now just another hero/martyr figure who has crumbled to dust.

She joins Lord Monckton (climate denier turned Obama birther), Milo Yiannopoulos (cheeky conservative turned man-boy-sex defender) and Jordan Peterson (inspirational scourge of victimhood and champion of enlightenment common sense, addicted to painkillers; who cold-turkied in Russia following a mental breakdown) in the avenue of open-mouthed laughing clowns that is the contemporary right.

Planet Janet Albrechtsen and Andrew Bolt have written gushingly about most of them. They’re either so stupid we should try and sell them a timeshare, or they don’t care that these hero figures have a limited shelf life.

Meanwhile, given the steady rise in right-wing anti-Semitic attacks in Australia (we can presume it wasn’t the Deakin Uni BDS collective who sprayed swastikas on the greens of the Jewish-community founded Cranbourne golf course recently), we hope that Cashman will get off the Jewish conspiracy hunting and onto shape-shifting lizards as soon as possible.

I mean have you ever asked what Bruce Pascoe is hiding behind that big beard of his? Gills, sheeple, he’s got gills! Open your eyes!

So why make a fuss about this? It's in a country far away that many here do not like.

The reason exists within the link above I posted to the Spanish Civil War. Once something like that goes live, the two sides give no quarter. There are countless examples of the swing - the Right moves through a town, all the Left are killed. The Left takes the town back, the Right are killed. What ends up is wholesale slaughter.

Also, if you look at the history of successful communist revolutions, once the vanguard group manages to overturn the executive/policing/military of a country, it is inevitably turned upon the civilians and we get massacre, perhaps 90 million in Russia, millions in Cambodia, 50 million in China. We get starvation massacres like the Holodomor (about 30+ million of the USSR total). If you look at the vanguard groups themselves, they don't do it on their own, they are helped.

So if one truly loves life, and values all opinion and peoples, the logical approach is to call out the nefarious organising going on in the background, with the hope that most rational people see it and do not succumb to its hatred. It is much better to debate the Left vs Right in an open forum/soapbox than reach a stage where only murder will suffice.

That's disappointing from Josephine Cashman i follow her on social media and she seems to be really playing things up to a far right demographic at the moment i guess to raise her profile and gain more followers so she has more of a voice, and i guess also out of frustration of the attacks from the left on her (like this guy who sounds like a complete far left wanker trying to link anything he can to her to bring her down)

It is disappointing though she should just stick to indigenous issues and take a more central approach to gain a broader diverse range of followers like Jacinta price (who is still right leaning) has, it might take more time but it would give her more credibility, it's a pity especially at this time with the media playing on the whole race thing she should be focussing on that area instead.

That whole other incident was pretty dodgy though, something doesn't add up there, i mean she is a lawyer obviously quite smart, absolutely crazy to think she would write a fake letter and think she was going to get away with it, if just doesn't add up, it more likely he agreed to it and then something has happened after it went public.
