Just finished watching The Family on Netflix.
It's a bit slow at first but the 5 episodes are worth the watch.
As a doco/dramatisation it carries itself by mixing facts and interviews about this secretive 'invisible' organisation hiding in plain sight.
Whilst the overall premise of their existence is presented as a benign relationship builder all in the name of Jesus, the hypochrisy of their operations is obviously the opposite of what their Master from 2000 years ago represented.
The seperation of church and state was enshrined in the US constitution but 'the family' have strived to undermine this democratic maxim by using 'Jesus' as the power to infiltrate government, not just in America but all over the world. They weren't concerned with the little people, only those in positions of power, which is directly related to the groups creation.
It matters not what an individual has done or who they are, if they accept Jesus as the only guiding factor in their life then they are welcomed.
Claiming to be a church (for taxation purposes), yet operating as a cult, the desire to change peoples worldview to match their own continues unabated to this day.
For me the evangelical conservative religous right are like a bad hangover from medieval times, and like the churchs overall, I would be glad to see them and their traditional family values/bibliospeak disappear into a blackhole of irrelevance.
Admittedly its not all dark and shady and some 'good' has been achieved by Doug Coe and co, but the self righteousness of their belief system is a hard pill to swallow for myself.
As for Trump, he's about as christian as an atheist, but the bible thumpers wholeheartedly endorse him. Strange world indeed.
If one could see God as being 'all that is' then without a doubt God works in mysterious ways.

Watched 'The Loudest Voice' over the last few nights, an incredible portayal of (US-based) Fox News founder/architect Roger Ailes.
The acting is very good - Russell Crowe as Roger and Sienna Miller as his wife Beth, plus Seth MacFarlane (!) as VP of Fox. Simon McBurney's take of Rupert Murdoch is spot on.
But even more impressive are the prosthetics used to turn Russell into Roger (and Sienna into Beth). Gotta see it in action to appreciate just how advanced the technology is.
Figured I knew exactly what course 'The Australian Dream' was gonna take before I watched it on the weekend. For those unaware it's the doco on Adam Goodes, the second one released in close succession, made by Stan Grant as a continuation of his IQ2 speech, so you can predict the angles it will run.
Fortunately the filmmakers didn't opt for the easy explanation of what was ultimately a complex turn of events. Credit goes for interviewing people such as Andrew Bolt, who obviously disagreed with much that Goodes did, but at least he didn't turn it into a Culture War pissing match.
Sport as a metaphor for life only goes so far in explaining the Goodes story. Too much was happening at the individual and national level for a simplistic overlay. Hard not to feel gutted for a guy who thought he was doing good, suffered from split second decisions that people then spent weeks and months condeming him for, but also had responsibilities put on him that he didn't request. Got hounded out of the game. A dual Brownlow winner.
So yeah, good film, even if Stan Grant is excruciatingly earnest.

Watched Trainspotting 2 over the long weekend. Didn't think I'd ever go there, I read about the many aborted attempts at making a sequel and each time I thought to myself, thank fuck for that. The original was so unflinchingly unsentimental that any nostalgic romp was bound to come off more like a Very Brady Christmas in comparison.
Anyway, two years after it was released and twenty three years after the first, I watched it and was glad I did. Great sequel. Amazing screenwriting.
Like the original it opens with Renton running to a heavily percussive soundtrack, except now in a gym on a treadmill under fluorescent lights instead of a smack addict running from the fuzz through the streets of Edinburgh. Some things stay the same, like people and their addictions, all that changes is the way those habits are channelled.
And the backdrop, that changes too, just as it did in the first film, "Drugs are changing, music's changing." This time around it's gentrification and globalisation.
Those are the primary themes, four men lost to middle age, wondering where the last twenty years went as the world got shinier and more connected, the EU grew, opening the opportunities for prosperity, by legitimate means or otherwise.
Irvine Welsh again appears in the film as Mikey Forrester, moved up from heroin dealer to fencing stolen property and trading contraband. Out of an Exploited t-shirt and into gaudy Italian leather.
Many references to the first film, all handled deftly, and the screenplay turns on a circularity: stories of the past that bring the present into existence.
It's a high wire act, you can't catch the zeitgeist twice, but the legacy of the first film remains intact and the second furnishes their story with time.

Nah, didn't read it. Read the book Trainspotting and maybe another one or two by Welsh, but I'm not keen on written vernacular. I struggle to get through any book, even Peter Carey's 'True History of the Kelly Gang', supposedly written in a style that I should understand was an ordeal.

Watched El Camino the other day, despite having seen only the first two episodes (season one) of Breaking Bad (not sure why I haven't binge-watched that series.. I really liked what I saw, but now it's on another streaming platform I don't have access to).
Anyway, despite the fact that it was an epilogue to the TV series - and thus, full of known assumptions - it was a bloody good film. Very tense the whole way.
Watched the WSL 'Mic'd Up' episode with Kelly Slater, and it was fascinating how much is demanded of Slater, how thin he spreads himself, yet he still, somehow, manages to pull it off.
Aside from when he's surfing, Slater is joined at hip with TV healer Charlie Goldsmith who has a soft, reassuring voice, and clearly has a hold over KS, but unfortunately he comes across as a bit of a twat.
Probably an unfair assesment, the editors crafted the story around Kelly not Charlie, but what parts they kept made him sound as profound as an Instagram Influencer.
More disconcerting was the absence of ocean. Not sure why I was only struck by it now, I've watched all the webcasts and it didn't present an issue then, but maybe it's getting the keys to the backstage and seeing the whole artifice and realising that surfing could exist without an ocean. It's an unsettling thought. Made the visit and weird surf talk by Jack White and John C. Reilly seem somehow fitting.
I dunno if this 'press conference' fits into this thread...or where the actual bout will...

haven’t seen either of those particular films by pilger or moore but will be sure to watch them both - thanks. a similar thing is happening internationally with knowledge. the big publishers (of both academic books and journals) run largely off free labour provided by academics doing editing and peer review. university libraries subscribe to journals and increasingly to online books, and the same corporations who own the publishers are also moving into running the universities’ CMSs. to publish in or review for journals (i.e. to have an academic career), you need an online account agreeing to their privacy policies. in short, taxpayers (paying for university infrastructure, wages, research funding) are paying to create knowledge, and it is all being handed over for free to multinational corporations who take it all and put it behind their paywalls, while they piss themselves laughing and cash in

This kept popping up in my Youtube recommendations and i finally gave it a go, and it was actually a pretty good watch, something completely different.
This was cool too, even if you are not or were not a skater give it a watch its just interesting in the story and his personality and he was just so far ahead of his time.
The guy is like Kelly slater to street skating but even on a more extreme level he was just so far ahead of everyone back in the 80s, then finally took his freestyle thing to street and was then so ahead of everyone.
To be honest back in the day, i wasn't even a fan of his, i was always into Tony Hawk or Hoosai or Mark Gonzales, i was intrigued by freestyle but it seemed more like a novelty and then the next level street thing blew up after i stopped skating.
Seriously him on street and Tony Hawk on ramp are the equivalent of what Kelly is to surfing, it's just unbelievable what they have achieved and how much they changed the face of Skateboarding.
I skated heaps when i was young mostly before i started surfing at 13, I've been thinking about it a lot lately, i really really regret giving up skating,, i dont know why i even did, i just surfed and forget skating, now I'm older i bought a new skateboard the set up i always wanted, and im using my board to get around but im too scared to even try an ollie because i might hurt myself and not be able to work etc.
