Forum behaviour and disappearing threads

You may have noticed a few threads have dropped from view the last day or so. It's a regrettable result of the bolshie behaviour that's been happening. Spirited debate is great, pisstaking even better, but there's a line that shouldn't be crossed, in sincerity, jest, or even in irony. No private matters made public, no references or allusions to other people's partners or family members. Those are the specifics.

More generally, let's heed the advice of the whispering sage and take the fucken pressure down.

If i could be bothered id start up half a dozen profiles and start showing you how farked up a forum can become when people start using multiple profiles and why some forums have strict rules on this, but i really cant be bothered.

Luckily it hasn't become an issue here, because even though we like to niggle and debate etc we generally keep things relatively civil.

End of the day its up to Stunet, but it's just something i noted, seeing i saw blindly post under two different names in the other article ad this thread came up.

We're an inclusive website. We don't discriminate based on religion or surfcraft.

With comparison sites being all the rage at the moment, we need to show just the value of an annual subscription compared to a monthly subscription.

This is also a handy way for us to demonstrate our skills in mathematics.

If you take $79.95 - the long standing price of an annual subscription - and divide it by 12, you'll get $6.6625.

Because no-one works in fractions of a cent any more, we rounded it down to $6.66.

However, this number won't appear on your credit card - you'll be charged $79.95 in one go.

indo-dreaming Monday, 16 Dec 2019 at 4:58pm

Ha ha is the price $6.66?

If it is Dromodreamer and your somehow offended because of your religion just shake you head and laugh, obviously Swellnet aren't a group of satan worshippers or anything, and im sure you're God isn't going to be angry at you for paying because its the number of the beast, if you really believe in a god then surely you can just believe thats what is in your heart is what is important or matters.

It was most likely just an in-house joke one afternoon when they couldn't decide the price or something.

IMHO complaining about it just makes Christians look bad....everyone is just going to read you post and think FFS like really.

thermalben's picture

ID - the number wasn't an in-house joke. We launched annual subs many many years ago, and $79.95 was the same price as most other sites.

We didn't have monthly subs at the time. So we didn't even know what the equivalent monthly price was.

And in fact, we only put the "monthly comparison" price on the site last year.

I also don't know what the equivalent daily price is, or the equivalent hourly price. 'Cos I don't care.

I'm sure someone, somewhere, will crunch the numbers and work out that the quarterly subscription price, divided by the number of surfcams and multiplied by the number of Asymmetrical Board Design articles, is related to the same date when the U.S. Air Force shut down HAARP. Thus, Swellnet is somehow involved in Weather Modification.

I think satan worshippers are the crazy of the crazy though, i mean if you are going to believe in Satan, doesn't that mean you also believe in God/Jesus.

So why would you want to worship Satan?

I don't believe in either, but i think id be a christian before worshipping satan, i mean if heaven and hell and god and satan all existed, id rather go to heaven than go hang down in hell with satan.

Dromodreamer, not sure if you're dead set or just trolling, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Just remember that Revelation is written in the ancient genre of "apocalyptic literature" and is highly symbolic - particularly in it's use of numbers (e.g. 4 meaning complete, 7 meaning perfect, 6 meaning imperfect). So believing that the book is teaching that the number 666 (let alone 6.66) is objectively evil wouldn't be correct. E.g. the description of Satan's people having 666 stamped on their heads shouldn't be taken literally, but could better be understood as teaching that those who "belong to Satan" and those who "belong to God/Christ" would all be known by their outward appearance/actions. Even that mightn't be quite correct - it's a notoriously hard book to interpret.

TL;DR there's no reason a Christian could not pay a sum of $6.66 in good conscience (though you shouldn't go against your own conscience).

Thats kind of cool, so Frank black Aka Pixies was correct when he said God is 7

"If man is five, if man is five, if man is five
Then the devil is six, then the devil is six
The devil is six, the devil is six and if the devil is six
Then God is seven , then God is seven, the God is seven"

So what does 5 symbolz

Jeeeesuss .....christians sure are a funny bunch....God bless yas.

Can I recommend $8.88 which is the number of Jesus......apparently.

Interestingly, "Some people take the Satanic associations of 666 so seriously that they actively avoid things related to 666 or the digits 6-6-6. This is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia."
(Apparently.)

Now there's a 'beast' of a word.

But in reality its nothing short of superstition.

"You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religion. . . . Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, quite intelligent enough." -Aldous Huxley

@indo re the number 5. I read somewhere the symbolism below;

1 - mineral
2 - plant
3 - animal
4 - human
5 - next evolutionary level above human aka the kingdom of God.(whatever that means)

Yeah, generally speaking where numbers are said to always/objectively stand for/mean something like what you've posted there, that's coming from a cultic background or from numerology rather than mainline Christianity. My post was more saying what a couple of numbers are taken to symbolise in one particular (highly poetic & symbolic) book than claiming those numbers objectivity represents those things.
Curious as to what your source for that list was WotL?

The post earlier on, displaying paranoia about the number six being repeated three times, is an example of religion's self fulfilling 'doom and gloom' perspective. If you look for a pattern or a symbol to justify a (in this case nonsensical) belief then you'll find it. You can then direct your heightened emotional state at any person associated with that symbol, thus blaming others for how you feel on the inside.

Religious advocates use emotion to scare people into joining them in their prison.

They use fear to try and get what they want - "Instead every christian out there won't join." - The implication being that you won't get their money if you don't change to the way they think you should be.

A small example but behaviours make patterns and patterns make personalities and society is made up of personalities.

Pops's picture
Pops's picture
Pops Tuesday, 17 Dec 2019 at 10:34am

Patrick, I don't think it's fair to imply that fear is the only/universal motivator to religion. No doubt that some people are driven by fear to a greater or lessor extent, but not all.

For myself, I found deism (i.e. belief in God) made sense of a lot of big questions (why is there something rather than nothing? How did the universe come into being? Why is the universe so improbably "finetuned" so as to be compatible with life? etc). And then I found Christianity to both be the most plausible form of deism, and to provide the most plausible explanation of certain historical facts (that Jesus of Nazareth was executed by crucifiction, that he was buried in a publically-known location, that his tomb was later found empty despite being under guard and being sealed, that his opponents then sought to claim the body had been stolen rather than that it was still in the tomb, and that his followers came to sincerely believe that he had risen and appeared to them - culminating in the explosion of the early church). Fear never factored in.

Crew, sorry for bringing religion in again. Always happy to discuss further, but appreciate that many here aren't interested.

AndyM's picture
AndyM's picture
AndyM Tuesday, 17 Dec 2019 at 11:34am

Why are people motivated to follow belief systems?

We could also include a desire for feelings of
- control
- competency

These may be pushed along by feelings of confusion and also a simple unwillingness to engage in critical thinking.

Pops's picture
Pops's picture
Pops Tuesday, 17 Dec 2019 at 12:21pm

You could add wanting to belong/be part of a community to that list AndyM.

There's also people who have thought critically and examined their beliefs - and changed them as a result of that examination. It's too simple to indiscriminately paint the religious as the closed off, non-thinking dunderhead to the naturalist/atheist's enlightened analyst; or vice versa. There's too many intelligent people on both sides for that to hold.

rooftop's picture
rooftop's picture
rooftop Tuesday, 17 Dec 2019 at 4:20pm

Agree with you on that one Pops. While not religious myself, I would argue that it often takes a very open mind to embrace religion as an adult. On the face of it, religion is a pretty kooky thing, easily mocked, and so most won't adopt it lightly. Conversion requires a deep questioning of one's existing assumptions. There are many closed-minded anti-theists calling themselves atheists who cling to a materialist views out of nothing but fear, tribalism and identity.

But asking why there is something rather than nothing is not a logical question. There may well be nothing, even an infinite number of nothings, but all those nothings don't exist and so don't matter. Asking why the universe is "so finely tuned to be compatible with life" is also looking at it the wrong way round.

There may be many universes wholly incompatible with life, but, again, there would be no life in them to contemplate the fact. It's like an owl saying, wow, what a happy coincidence that I can see so well in the dark, and my favourite meal is mice, which are out at night. No, all the owls with bad eyesight or who didn't like mice starved and failed to pass on their genes. What we're left with is those that are compatible with their environment. Of all the possible universes out there, (and we don't know how many there might be), the one perfectly suited to producing us would have done so.
