More like 40 years, Syppy. One thing. Thatcher. Reagan. Oz response. 35 years, give or take. Under a Labor Govt.

In the UK for example, no working class resistance to Thatcher? No union resistance to Thatcher? No 'academic wanker' resistance to Thatcher?

Hmmmm.

Forward to the US, Clinton. 90s. Welfare cuts. GATT. NAFTA. WTO. No working class, union, & 'academic wanker' resistance?

Seattle, WTO, 1999. No worker, union, 'academic resistance'?

Australia, Melbourne, S11, WEF, 2000. No worker, union, 'academic wanker' resistance?

I could go on.

What are you trying to articulate here?

Where does "bullshit political correctness" fit in?

BB, you've said you have faith in the ingenuity of mankind etc etc and that we are well and truly on the path to decarbonising etc etc.

Maybe you've said Coal is dead?

Anyhow I've read a bunch of article since the election saying coal is dead.

But correct if wrong, it's likely Adani will go ahead and possible other mega coal mines in the Galilee basin. Two new coal mines were just approved in QLD.

How is coal dead? It looks pretty healthy from this perspective.

I don't agree Blindboy western nations like Australia transition to renewables is set by the lifespan of our current coal fired power plants.

Same with India and China etc problem for them is they have large numbers of new coal fired power plants, although they also have large numbers of old ones to close down.

IMHO sell it while we can, 25 to 50 years it could be worth nothing.

100% support transition to renewables, i can understand if people got upset if we built a new coal fired power plant, i think that would be a backwards move.

Coal exports though, completely different issue, by not allowing our coal to be used, does it help in anyway...nope...

In some cases it could actually mean the coal places like China and India otherwise must source elsewhere could be of poorer quality causing more C20 emission and if the theory of C20 emissions affecting climate is true, could speed up climate change.

Not to mention if mined in developing countries environmental standards could be worse so environmental impacts from mining worse than in Australia.

Perhaps the sensible balance would be to ensure any coal mining for exports are of a certain standard of coal.

BB I 100% support a sensible transition to renewables, there is no reason not too, it's jut an evolution in energy which is cleaner, i even hope to get rooftop solar in the next 12 months.

But like it or not, human caused global warming is still a theory not a proven fact, yes it's a valid theory that is highly likely correct but it's not a certainty.

Science should always be reevaluating and questioning and testing theories and ideas until it can be proven and totally understood.

And no just because a majority believes a prediction doesn't make it true, classic example recent labor win that virtually no one saw coming including the political analyst.

Climate is such a complex area with so many different aspects many aspects we are still learning to think we can understand or predict everything about the area is crazy, even things we create ourselves like the Y2K thing often don't turn out as predicted.

I’ll assume you’re on a pension then.

Certainly puts it into perspective when you attack self supporting retirees as being entitled, doesn’t it ? When you attack the way people vote as though they’re stealing from the poor by considering which party would help in securing their financial future.

Decades of overseas trips , surfboards and luxuries and now it’s a hand out from BB.

Just trying to get my head around the socialist perspective. What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine.

Grown man taking money from those who couldn’t work to support themselves. Embarrassing.

I’ve got nothing at all against retirees on a pension, just those who bite the hand that feeds.

FNQ voted overwhelmingly for the LNP, One Nation and Clive as is/was their right.

FNQ therefore voted overwhelmingly in support the development of Adani and other mines in that basin on the promise of jobs.

Let's talk jobs.

The last time I looked there are between 60,000 and 80,000 (seasonal dependent) direct jobs in tourism mainly associated with the reef and the natural environment. Double those numbers to consider indirect jobs in the total.

Now, the numbers have wildly varied but what is the latest number of jobs quoted for Adani and let's remember its going to be highly automated .... between 2,000 and 5,000 ongoing jobs??

So FNQers are prepared to put between 120,000 and 180,000 jobs at risk for what? Between 2,000 and 5,000 jobs??

Something just doesn't stack up here.

I love the natural world of FNQ and the reef but the people are different. In all my trips there something always happens to remind me so like the time I queried the change given to me in a shop in Cairns and the manager invited me to "settle it outside" or the time I was refused service at a servo in Rockhampton because of my Vicco number plates. My brother in law comes from FNQ and he just reckons the ghost to Joh lives in all of them.

On Adani, if it must proceed, and IMO that will be a sad day, let it do so with zero taxpayer money or concessions, let it rise or fall on the back of its own capital. My guess is the Adani story has some way to go, its a shady company run by even shadier people, it will be a financial disaster in the making if taxpayers money or underwriting goes anywhere near it.

EDIT: most of those tourism jobs are with small businesses (that pay tax) while Adani's track record of tax avoidance and seeking taxpayer concessions and grants are there for all to see.

My wife and I are wanting to do a similar move north to the south coast, even have towns, streets and down to specific houses in mind if they come up for sale.

In our discussions we believe we will need to quickly make local contacts via clubs and associations - golf (I hate golf!), CFA, CWA, landcare and other NGOs and charities.

How are you and your wife going in that regard?

stunet's picture
stunet's picture
stunet Thursday, 23 May 2019 at 3:43pm

Not sure if I've missed something here or what...but an interjection? This govt has a bad whiff of black money and rent-seeking, money that's increasingly falling outside the regulatory system, and seemingly encouraged to do so, that it would be more rational to pursue those ends to shore up our economy than build white elephants that, while they will provide jobs (note, the jobs dont yet exist), will also have subsidised construction and privatised profits. Same as it ever was.

Also worth asking why so many financial institutions wont lend Adani the money to build. I mean, some may have been swayed by politics, but all 28 of them? Nah, they're mercernaries, they've got shareholders to think of, but they know which way the wind is blowing.

GuySmiley's picture
GuySmiley's picture
GuySmiley Thursday, 23 May 2019 at 3:57pm

There was an excellent 4 Corners program last year on Adani.

Worth looking at.

A very dodgy company run by even dodgier people.

It concluded the company was basically bankrupt except for the "book" value of the Abbott Point port facilities which will also be worthless unless the Adani mine goes ahead. So while the mine makes no financial sense, given the current and highly likely long term low price for coal, the Adani owners want to proceed solely to prop up the book value of an asset ..... alternatively, if the government stopped it the Adani company would sue for billions, in lieu of future earnings which are all a mirage given the price of coal here on end.

.... and as for Palmer, his $60 million buys him the environmental approvals associated with Adani as he's land is right next door.

The mineral councils and lobby groups are running the joint.

indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming's picture
indo-dreaming Thursday, 23 May 2019 at 4:15pm

Apart from Jobs at mines.

Id assume that most of the mines is the area up in QLD would be fly in fly out workers, but the mines would still boast economical growth in the area in all kinds of different ways.

Not to mention many fly in fly out workers would end up basing them selves in places like Makay or Townsville etc and on time off fly back to these areas and in many cases being cashed up and having worked their butts of for a few weeks then have a few weeks to kill, spend up big, eating out, partying, hobbies etc

So the $$$ flows all around the FNQ area.

Many of those people then end up setting down roots in these areas all cashed up, open business etc further supporting these communities.

BTW. God bless the voters of FNQ if only the area had proper waves.

Can we all agree no taxpayer funding or underwriting of Adani or any mine, resource or power station here on end?

Now before you are tempted to say what about the subsidies renewables get (which is a fair point ... to a point) just do your research on the vast subsidies the fossil fuel industries and mining already get e.g. all those multi nationals exporting all our gas aren't expected to pay ANY tax for up to 3 decades because of what they were able to extract from state and the federal government.

Stu - Imagine If the ALP had half a clue and decided to use the BORROWED money that’s needed in the futile attempt to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year in our Big Australia Ponzi scheme and used it as productive investment instead .

As Pottz says - WOW !

Our environment isn’t fucked through masses of humanity, our wages grow , our house prices stabilise and our economy has a foundation made of something other than the sands of the immigration disaster.

As soon as immigration stops the GDP goes negative, our national credit rating goes arse up and we realise that everyone is indebted to their eyeballs with no employment . So Big Australia it is ......where everyone loses. Even the koalas.

But let’s keep kicking that can down the road Scomo and Albo.

Midnight Oil are playing Anita's Theatre, Thirroul, in a few hours time. They tried to avoid scalping by implementing some measure or other, not sure what, but it obviously didn't work cos just minutes after they went on sale, the tickets were on sale at Viagogo for hundreds of dollars.

That price has only been going up, and last night two general admission tickets sold for $4,973 each!

Fortunately a mate plays in the support band and got me two tickets for a little cheaper than that.

This morning my wife went through the last drawer down, pulled out old contest T-shirts, IMB Surfmasters, OP Oz, and Beaurepaires, plus a few old Midnight Oil shirts, She's currently wearing a 1985 tour shirt (the Steal Base Slide tour, first stop Dubbo). Neighbour reckons we could get $1K for that shirt on eBay.

So between our tickets and shirt we have about $11K worth of assets, but we're not gonna liquidate 'em, instead we're just about to head down to Beaches for two-for-one snitties, a heap of tins, and some sing song.
