BB - You’re aware of who puts the food on Ross Gittin’s table aren’t you ?

It’s his bosses at Domain Fairfax who’s only profitable sector is its real estate arm which depends almost entirely on mass immigration to keep it above water.

Here’s a rebuttal to your link :https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2019/03/gittins-fiddles-while-wages-burn/

If you would do me the favour of reading it thoroughly I’d appreciate it. Contained within it is Ross Gittin previous thoughts on mass immigration before he was employed by Domain. Extensive quotations towards the bottom of the page.

Quite damning.

Blowin, Ross Gittins has been the Economics Editor of SMH for as long as I can remember and Domain was started by them about 20 years ago. I have never seen any evidence of his spruiking of the housing market in that time. If you have evidence then you should quote it otherwise it is just another (yawn) ad hominen attack or another spurious disregard for a souce you do not like. All very tedious really. I have no reason to believe that his views on immigration have changed at all since the pieces quoted in your link.

This is what I have said so many times I have lost count.
"....... I don't deny that immigration has an influence on wages, I just want it seen in the context of the numerous other factors which you ignore" NB This does not mean I oppose immigration, it just means I acknowledge it has an effect on wages.

So the piece you posted makes a case for something we both agree on ..... that immigration creates downward pressure on wages but is totally irrelevant to the piece I posted except that it castigates Gittins for not writing about their (and yours ad infinitum) favourite topic. My quote analyses some of the (numerous) other factors that influence wages. I am happy to discuss them, but surely you have done the effect of immigration to death. And as I said before, the big end of town are happy to see people focus on that issue as it is such a wonderful distraction from all the other ways they are being screwed.
Now count to ten slowly, turn off your iPad, do some yoga, stay off the beer and see if you can actually address the issue this time rather than climb back on that poor exhausted immigration hobby horse you love so much.

Noticed our Trade minister was singing the praises of the FTA with Indonesia last night, more cattle, more meat and more vegatables will apparently be sold to Indonesia which is apparently good news. All the while I was thinking how will all this be grown with the existing terminally sick river system and water management programs we have here. Is water going to be suddenly pulled from thin air or does the LNP believe they can continue in their fucking up of the environment. It is worth noting that it takes over 15,000 litres of water to grow 1kg of beef.

I also note the ACTU are up in arms because it will allow even more really cheap labour into the country.

Apparently more working holiday visas available for indo's, which yes means more cheap labor and undermining of wages in oz.

But I'm cool with it, this time. We kind of owe em (from my warped perspective)

"It is worth noting that it takes over 15,000 litres of water to grow 1kg of beef."

True but also misleading.

Cattle in Australia is generally grass feed and supplemented by hay, silage etc all of which is grown from natural rainfall, then they drink from dams in most cases also feed by natural rainfall but in some cases those little half a tank drinking things filled from bores. (Even grain feed beef in Australia, is only done towards the end of their life cycle)

Cattle don't actually drink much, only reason it takes so much water top produces beef is because it takes a long time until the cattle is ready to slaughter and harvest the beef.

On the flip side crops are generally seasonal planted then harvest so for 1kg of food produced less water is technically used.

However most crops can't be grown on just natural rainfall and need to have regular irrigation from bores, which use use huge amounts of ground water over short periods much of which is lost through evaporation and could possibly effect local groundwater levels.

So which one is more sustainable?

Even with the ' bule pass' he can't get a gig. I dare say one needs a fair bit of cash and the right connections to get a run.

you'd hope the oz embassy and government would aware of these 'needs' when making the current changes. But I bet they don't give a shit as long as they're getting what they want out of it.

Sustainable agriculture should be hand in glove but I doubt that to mostly be the case in the top end especially when it come to cattle. But it will continue to happen while the land gives up regardless what any of us think. As a sad aside, all cattle that recently drowned either in water or mud in the channel country in Qld. Is that sustainable raising cattle in country criss-crossed with water courses that can flood so drastically? These guys are giving sustainable agriculture a fair dinkum crack. https://wooleen.com.au. The history past and rear present of Wooleen makes interesting reading. I've been following their work for several years now.

If we are going to have FTAs and I do query their benefits to the general population I think we should use them to foster greater relationships with near neighbours like Indonesia and the Pacific rim and that includes allowing foreign workers here, if we must. @Indo, genuine question, given your brother-in-law's experience has that to at least to some degree coloured your well annunciated view on refugees arriving here by boat?

Sounds like the usual pre-election manoeuvring by business to give an issue enough profile so one, or both, parties respond to it. Doesn't seem to be any danger of it being closed before the election so it is probably for the best if it is left for the in coming government to judge the issue on its merits rather than use it to buy a few votes.

Blowin's picture
Blowin's picture
Blowin Wednesday, 6 Mar 2019 at 10:31am

Judge the issue on its merits ?

The gas companies are holding the entire East coast economy to ransom with their artificially inflated energy prices. They’re taking OUR gas and selling it overseas then we’ve got to pay to import it back at greatly increased prices.

Energy prices are a massive component of every household and business budget. Businesses fail due to excess energy prices . Now our ability to manufacture the explosives used to defend our country is in jeopardy.

The whole deal is a rort , a cartel and an impost on every East coast Australian.

All this after the energy companies lied about their access to gas and their ability to recoup costs domestically in order to construct their subsidised plants in the first place.

But the REAL reason that this entire loop is being created is in order to gain social liscence to commence non conventional gas acquisition ie fracking etc. using the fraudulent claim that there is a gas shortage.

We are being led by the nose .

Again.

The only reason the pollies on both sides are even considering letting the situation stand is because of the export dollars the gas brings to help shore up a failing economy after they’ve run it into the ground with their corrupt housing Ponzi scheme.

Too bad that most of those export dollars actually wind up in the pockets of the foreign owners though.

blindboy's picture
blindboy's picture
blindboy Wednesday, 6 Mar 2019 at 11:00am

I was talking about what seemed to be lobbying by that company for some sort of subsidy. The wider issue of gas prices is complex and rising prices are being used as an argument for increased use of fracking on the east coast. Will the ALP sort the issue out? Well I think they are more likely than Slomo and go.

"@Indo, genuine question, given your brother-in-law's experience has that to at least to some degree coloured your well annunciated view on refugees arriving here by boat?"

No not in anyway whatsoever, my brother inlay experience is only in the recent two years, and too be honest even though we get on fine I'm not sure if i want him here as he would be working with me for a six months or so and living with us which could be a bit too much...fine if a holiday but maybe not for six months or so and he currently is doing pretty well in Indo got good work etc.

Even my experience with sponsoring my wife to come to Aussie almost 15 years ago doesn't really shape my view, you often hear stories of how hard it can be, but she got accepted very fast.

Same with sponsoring my inlays to visit, it was a bit of a mission especially considering just a few weeks holiday, but as much as i get on with them, i don't really want them here too long either staying with us or for it to be a too regular thing, id rather go to indo, visit them for a few days, my wife stays longer and i then go elsewhere surfing, or even every few years we take them with us to different places in Indonesia like Mentawais, which is actually pretty cool.

I think my viewpoints on refugee situation has developed more from a first hand experience of knowing the hardships many people in Indonesia face (and safe to assumed large population of people in all developing countries face), obviously villages I've spent time in and even had two friends die from simple things like dirt complications, and seen others die (well not seen but the next year i visit are no longer alive) because they died from preventable disease like TB or other treatable or preventable things.

My wife family are pretty well off for their neighbourhood now which is a poor neighbourhood , but before they had very little and even in their neighbourhood their is people doing it super tough, family's just living in a room or two with a no furniture just a concrete floor, no toilet, often share a community toilet or community well and we are not talking about a village, this is in a city area of a Javanesse city with a few million people.

It makes me see the situation much different than many people, because i know that most refugees are doing it extremely hard back closer to areas they fled, be it stuck in a refugee camp or just neighbourhoods in countries they have fled too, I'm thinking of these people and the bigger picture and how i would feel if in their shoes and how i would feel if others were treated differently and gain priority.

And its hard to believe or take serious people on Manus or Nauru who claim this and that when in reality compared to millions in this world and millions of other refugees they have everything so good.

The problem most people have is they have little to know understanding of how most people in developing countries live and the lack of ability to travel and pay people smugglers and how most refugees would be so grateful for everything provided on Manus or Nauru and for basically becoming a lottery winner in getting a golden ticket to a new life in a developed country. (not the first draw but its like a second draw, first draw is getting resettled through resettlement programs i guess)

There is no understanding with most Australians that most refugees don't have this ability to gain priority and that what you are seeing is a lucky minority (that could still escalate to a large number when you have 65 million refugees in the world)

Yeah so i think my view is shaped more about possibly having a better first hand understanding of the lifes of many people in developing countries, rather than any dealings with immigration , visa etc

PS. My wife wanted to do further study to become a nurse the other week as did here friend from Africa they both went through the whole process and got accepted, and had been told they could get a hex debt, but once it came to the crunch they couldn't as athough residence of Australia and paid tax for almost 15 years my wife is still Indonesian, but they also told her if she was a refugee even on a TPI visa she could get a hex debt....man was she pissed off whinging about how refugees can get hex debts but she cant.

To be honest i just said oh well it sucks and thats so wrong but it is what it is..end of story for me..few weeks latter and she still whinging to everyone else about it.

Yeah she could become Australian, but makes things more complicated for living and working and retiring in Indonesia and for my daughter who is currently a dual citizen (must pick one at 18)

100% agree Blowin, Australia got sold a pup with Gas big time, and there is no greater example I can think of that supports your view that both sides of politics are selling out Australians. I don't think any other gas producing country in the world did not set aside gas for domestic consumption when signing export licences like AU did. The last licences were signed during Gillard's time and her resources minister, Martin Ferguson (ex ACTU FFS) strongly supported not setting aside gas for domestic use. Well, Ferguson left politics and immediately landed a prime position with the Minerals Council. Legislative negligence on a grand scale. https://www.crikey.com.au/2017/08/09/why-martin-ferguson-turned-on-the-a...

Victoria used to have extremely cheap gas until the day its gas network got connected to the eastern seaboard pipelines that all went north to Qld where it's shipped overseas.

This is how fucked the gas market is here AGL is thinking of buying AU gas back off the Japanese and shipping back to Victoria and offloading it in Westernport Bay, an extremely sensitive environmental waterway with one very narrow but deep enough shipping channel.

You guys are full of it. NSW is a state that runs like a clock thanks to Gladys and Mike before her. Mike is only gone because being cruel to greyhounds upsets him and he tried to stop it and caused an uproar. The new hospitals and schools Labor is parroting on about are already being built by the Libs. The road network is being built now and on time. Everyone froths on footy so the new stadium is being built. New airports and train lines being built now. Yes they sold off the power grid for big bucks because they know it will be worth nothing in 10 years when everyone is on the new battery solar systems. Regarding a few of the concerts being shut down, why should the Govt be responsible for dickheads who stick synthetic tablets made by crims in their mouths. The concert people need a better plan and approach. Considering all the new migrants are usually dumped in NSW and we have the most people already, I think they are handling this pretty well so if you can do better get into politics as its easy to be an armchair expert rather than have a helpful and contributing view.

Just one short step from optimism to delusion. Gladys has stuffed up every major infrastructure project, allowed private enterprise to run public hospitals with an accompanying decline in safety and service and, having shut down Sydney's night life now wants to shut down the music festivals. She has caused several deaths at these events by refusing to take expert medical and legal advice that pill testing is effective and foes not lead to increased use. She will be remembered as the least competent Premier in a generation, just anothe narrow minded ideologue devoted to filling the pockets of developers and the rest of the Big Endians
