Alright , OK , not too bad.

Mull growers going full Seppo and shooting holes in each other in their inbred enclave. That shit would never happen here ......
Well , it does , but the bastards doing it probably wouldn’t be circle jerking over their outlaw status.

The government is revealed to Big the biggest bunch of crooks in town.

Same, same ....but different.

"Wellington Paranormal"
It's a throwback to 80's Kiwis taking the piss on laid back!
Think Stoner Round the Twist meets X Files (Only a bit more mental than that!)

The Special FX are subtle but always brilliant often disguised in the background.
The whole show trashes cool on every level. Jokes are painless but mess you up!
The only downer being a 6 pack of 20 min episodes.
Leaves you craving for a fix ...need want more brainz. Yea funny as Cuz.*****

This is a good docco, unbelievable what these people go through this kind of poverty would be hard enough in India an already hot climate, but just living on a land that is basically on fire below would be hell in itself.

Sometimes those in poverty still look okay healthy or mental health wise, you can see the pain and hard life in these people...the place is literally hell on earth.

Just watched Fyre festival on Netflix.

Recommend.

I knew nothing about the Fyre festival prior to watching. And I’d have to say it would have been the schadenfreude hit of the summer except it wasn’t just a bunch of self obsessed insta-fucktards affected by this outrageous con job.

Bit sucky the way they semi redeem the main bastard as a lovingly incorrigible rogue with a gift for graft in the final few scenes. Such an American perspective.

Fucker really needs a good kick in the nuts .

Just watched Fyre.

So many authentic perspectives.

What a clustering fyrefuck it was.

Its a prime example of a grand idea devoid of practical reality. The bottom line is that the larger the idea or project the greater the devil is in the detail.

Why do I get the feeling Billy the bullshitter will be back some day.? (Hows his form after getting out on bail? What an idiot)

Like blowin says, he still needs a good nut kicking.

"Hey everybody we're having a huuuge music festival on an island!"

"Sounds great, who's playing?"

"Errrr not important we'll work it out later. Now get promoting and start parting cash from the punters anyway you can, and if you don't like it,
you're fired! "

In summary,

Should have been at the promo shoot.

Holy shit, I just watched Fyre last night too.

Pretty much sums up how Insta-life (sorry, lyfe) is now the dominant force in many people’s lives, and forms the crux of so many businesses (the surf industry is no exception either).

It’s incredible to see how easily people can be convinced to pay massive amounts of money just to be associated with something that’s perceived to be fashionable, even if it doesn’t exist.

Going back to the Fyre stuff, I've found the link for an indie version of the tale, released about the same time as the Netflix one:

Have a watch before it gets taken down if you are interested.

Also a link which discusses Fyre and the underlying millieu:

https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2019/01/marie-kondo-fy...

if you are feeling a bit more like reading.

"Fyre Fraud, surprise-dropped by Hulu last Monday, takes a different approach. Directed by Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, it mines the sociological implications of Fyre Fest, and what it says about a generation of Americans that they’re so susceptible to a scammer with an Instagram account. Fyre Fraud includes parts of a taped interview with McFarland himself (who was supposedly paid for his participation), but they’re the least revealing moments in the documentary. More interesting is how Fyre Fraud uses the selling of the festival to consider the ways some Millennials understand identity, including their anxieties about affirming their existences online—literally, Pics or it didn’t happen.

Fyre Fraud posits that, for all the sloppiness of his grift, McFarland actually has a surprisingly intuitive sense of what Millennials want, and how to market it to them. Having been raised with the sense that being exceptional is the only way to thrive, Millennials can be hyperaware of their own status relative to others, and ferociously invested in elevating themselves above the pack. As preposterous as the Fyre Festival promotional video might seem now, it pings all the right dopamine receptors in an ongoing loop of stick (the acute fomo of knowing everyone important is somewhere doing something fabulous without you) and carrot (countless Instagram opportunities for personal branding and self-curation). Influencers, the New Yorker writer Jia Tolentino says in Fyre Fraud, are people who have refined and monetized the art of this “performance of an attractive life.” "

This comes back to our surf spots being instagrammed, or beautiful spots on walking tracks, or the whitest sandy beach - they all get mobbed to death for a while after appearing online or on Insta, then hopefully return to relative quietness after. All the FOMO/'pics or it didn't happen' - I detect that here, in an earlier type of online forum like these, there's a desire to not, when all is said and done, take the pics and share them. Keep the secret.

AndyM's picture
AndyM's picture
AndyM Wednesday, 23 Jan 2019 at 11:13pm

Yep, the whole millenial/Fyre thing is an expression of the neoliberal wet dream:

"Even as they’re poorer, Millennials are more materialistic: 81 percent of Americans born during the 1980s say that accruing wealth is among their significant life goals, more than 20 percent higher than previous generations.
As a national belief in the collective has given way to an emphasis on the individual, Millennials have had to become less inhibited about the pursuit of self-gain, and more shrewd about how they define themselves.
Amplified by social media, such perfectionism urges the posting of absurdly idealized images, which, transmitted, reinforce the cycle of unrealistic physical ideals and a sense of alienation."

To be honest, I wouldn't give a fuck about these disgusting, vacuous narcissists apart from two things.

Firstly, is it really their fault as to how society and modern culture has shaped them? And secondly, the toxic stench of American pop culture permeates the whole world, right down to your local surf break in Australia, so sitting back and laughing at this whole sad Fyre debacle is not really an option.

But there doesn't seem to be any increase in the level of critical thinking of kids coming through, in fact I'd say that kids are tying themselves in knots trying to differentiate between facts and postmodern fads.

Andy M - you got it, the lack of critical thinking. Only school interview I ever stormed out of, when the fucking teacher was consistently getting the kids to analyse prose based on how it made them feel. That's a slippery slope to "My feels are hurt, I will attack" - rather than engaging a topic based on rational, critical response. Thank goodness for separate Lit classes.

Saw Storm Boy with the fam yesterday.

I suppose growing up in South Oz, the original movie was a big part of growing up - one of very few films filmed 'locally', which was a bit of a buzz to see on the big screen.

Movie remakes are always going to be tough work, but I reckon that for the most part they did a really good job. Only major gripe was that the small number of scenes with CGI work were a little low in quality (compared to what we're used to seeing these days) but Finn Little was amazing as Storm Boy.

Plenty of location cameos for South Oz surfers too: aside from the obvious Coorong shots, it looks like they did quite a bit of filming on The Strand at Port Elliot. There appears to be some scenes shot somewhere along the Middleton to Goolwa stretch, and Myponga gets a look-in too.

Watched it, yes pretty crazy very raw docco that guy has balls.

Crazy to think it wasn't that long ago and i was often in areas of Sumatra just south of Aceh during that era.(Nias, Telos, Mentawais)

It's just really weird and almost hard to see Indonesians fighting Indonesians, i support Indonesias right to Aceh but also hard not to feel for those people, hard to see Indonesias suffering.

I don't believe in a god, but pretty crazy the tsunami changed things, it's almost like a strange gift for Indonesia to sort out the issue like a cleansing.

I don't have anything to do with Aceh so know little of the real current situation or thoughts of the people, but hard to imagine these people can just get on with life and forgive and forget.

Probably the influence of Wahhabist Islam. Its more hard core than the relatively soft cultured Islam that a lot of Indos go for.

Think Southern Philippines ( Mindanao ) where they’ve just been given autocratic rule . Next stage is Tamil Sri Lanka.

Indonesia was formed from the areas the Dutch occupied which included Aceh, so it's Indonesia's legal right to control Aceh, so i support that.

East Timor is different because it was never under Dutch rule.

What i was going to say but forget too yesterday, is i wonder how the Aceh people viewed the tsunami?

I wonder if they saw it as a sign from god or something that they were not happy?

Because interestingly the areas they talk about a lot in this film the south and west areas were the main areas hit by the Tsunami.

And it seemed a real turning point.

@Amb

Yeah as lost doggie said Papua/West Papua (formerly Iran Jaya) and areas of Maluku.

I don't think anyone was really happy with being colonised by Dutch or Japanese, although now if you talk to Indonesians it's pretty rare to find any that don't like Dutch or Japanese, some even now look back and say the Dutch made Indonesia.

It's actually weird how forgiving Indonesian people are, i have no idea how Aceh people feel, but i wouldn't be surprised if now many are happy to be part of Indonesia.

Probably the important thing to understand is that for a very very long time Indonesia was very Javacentric as most of the population live on Java, so much of the income came from outer areas of Indonesia that are very resource rich but never went back to these areas. (nothing was every built, schools, roads, ins electricity, etc

Under the previous government SBY and even more so now under Jokowi this whole approach has totally changed 360 and now the government puts extra focus on all these other provinces and outer islands etc

Its actually amazing the infrastructure developments that have been going on, so many new airports etc around Indonesia but in places like Nias, Telos, Mentawais its crazy the new infrastructure that has gone down in the last ten years especially last five years or so, new roads, concert paths, jetty's, toilets for villages, new ports, new schools, phone towers, mains electricity where there was none.

@Ifocus

Yeah 100% that is a factor in the major areas, and all new major airports (pretty much every major airport in Indonesia has be rebuilt or major renovations in last ten years)

And yeah 100% the Indonesian economy is growing at a crazy rate, i wish i could find it, there was a article that had like an active counter prediction and major economies, and Indonesia just keeps on going up and up towards 2050 to number 4 or something , its crazy when you watch it.

But the infrastructure for all these outer provinces is a bit different, its a intentional movement more about politics than anything, to get votes and keep everyone happy and keep Indonesia united etc

There has been articles about it, and mentioned in books etc

Edit: Not as impressive as i remember it, maybe i saw this one from 80s to 2023 (where Indonesian goes from 15th to 6th GDP ranking)

Finished watching The Crown on Netflix recently.

Never would have thought I’d enjoy it . The royals never interested me previously but it’s not bad at all.

Interesting watching the tail end of the devolution of the Monarchy, from divine gods with absolute power to the modern day struggle for relevance. The descent into having to accommodate the proles as they’ve watched other monarchies around the world falter and disintegrate and their existential angst at how long their own remaining power can be sustained is well documented.

Also worth watching as it’s basically a historical documentary overlayed on their personal and professional lives. Like any good program it allows you to both like and dislike the characters. Real life is seldom as black and white as absolute heroes and villains and it’s refreshing when a program reflects this truth.

Well acted with the great production values that you take for granted with quality TV these days.

It’s the monarchy as soap opera and historical documentary.

Definitely worth the effort.

Strange to think that the entire monarchy is nothing more than the result of centuries of gentrifying the organised crime which spawned and perpetuated the original wealth and power and maintained its polite respectability to the recent age.

The ultimate Gangster family - Feared , deified then finally ceding what it must to modern democracy.

With Game of Thrones about to kick off it's last season this month - I've found a better 'game of thrones'. The BBC's recount of the Wars of the Roses:

Stunning just how much it is like the fiction, you'd think GRRM might have been digging here. (Oh, and I've stood on the wall myself - at least the real-life wall that got bigger and more icy in its allegory. It was cold and bleak that day, didn't pee off it like Tyrion did.)
