This is a good docco, unbelievable what these people go through this kind of poverty would be hard enough in India an already hot climate, but just living on a land that is basically on fire below would be hell in itself.
Sometimes those in poverty still look okay healthy or mental health wise, you can see the pain and hard life in these people...the place is literally hell on earth.
This is another good one in Indonesia, pretty sad stuff, good news is this docco is a few years old and the current government is trying to address these issues and clean ups etc, and in the last six month there has been progress in banning plastic bags etc in some provinces (including Bali)

I knew nothing about the Fyre festival prior to watching. And I’d have to say it would have been the schadenfreude hit of the summer except it wasn’t just a bunch of self obsessed insta-fucktards affected by this outrageous con job.
Bit sucky the way they semi redeem the main bastard as a lovingly incorrigible rogue with a gift for graft in the final few scenes. Such an American perspective.

Holy shit, I just watched Fyre last night too.
Pretty much sums up how Insta-life (sorry, lyfe) is now the dominant force in many people’s lives, and forms the crux of so many businesses (the surf industry is no exception either).
It’s incredible to see how easily people can be convinced to pay massive amounts of money just to be associated with something that’s perceived to be fashionable, even if it doesn’t exist.
If anyone wants a good fictional representation of the Insta crew getting slaughtered in gory ways, I can recommend the film 'Cloverfield' where a giant beastie (and it's lice) attacks NYC one night.
Kathryn Bigelow's directorial debut. Willem Defoe's first starring role. Robert Gordon acts in it and is on the soundtrack.

This comes back to our surf spots being instagrammed, or beautiful spots on walking tracks, or the whitest sandy beach - they all get mobbed to death for a while after appearing online or on Insta, then hopefully return to relative quietness after. All the FOMO/'pics or it didn't happen' - I detect that here, in an earlier type of online forum like these, there's a desire to not, when all is said and done, take the pics and share them. Watched 'Fyre Festival' last night and it made me happy to be a simple, suburban cynic. Fuck me, kids, stop comparing your insides to other peoples outsides. Suspend your disbelief while seated at the cinema but be brutal to the shit you see online/on TV/on billboards.

I would recommend it, but with a warning. It's very fucking disturbing and will emotionally kick you in the guts. It took me a while to get to sleep after watching it.

As one who opposes the death penalty it was hard not to want to see such justice applied.
We're told ad-nauseum what sophisticated consumers of media these digital natives are, and how much control they have over what they're participating in.
But there doesn't seem to be any increase in the level of critical thinking of kids coming through, in fact I'd say that kids are tying themselves in knots trying to differentiate between facts and postmodern fads.
I think they're as easily led as ever.

Only school interview I ever stormed out of, when the fucking teacher was consistently getting the kids to analyse prose based on how it made them feel. Doco by William Nessen ,The Black Road.Covers GAM and their fight with Jakarta/Indonesia in Aceh which only finished due to Tsunami.Having spent a lot of time in the region and having friends here I find it interesting to say the least.Yeh ok it's from 2005 but I don't get out of my cave in the jungle to comment very much here or anywhere else,hence my other comment about the Nam book coming tonight,as well but I do love the special mie gorengs available in Aceh and the coffees that are laced with the local product as well ha ha.But seriously,heavy word that,its a great doco and well worth a look.Cheers

Saw Storm Boy with the fam yesterday.
I suppose growing up in South Oz, the original movie was a big part of growing up - one of very few films filmed 'locally', which was a bit of a buzz to see on the big screen.
Movie remakes are always going to be tough work, but I reckon that for the most part they did a really good job. Only major gripe was that the small number of scenes with CGI work were a little low in quality (compared to what we're used to seeing these days) but Finn Little was amazing as Storm Boy.
Plenty of location cameos for South Oz surfers too: aside from the obvious Coorong shots, it looks like they did quite a bit of filming on The Strand at Port Elliot. There appears to be some scenes shot somewhere along the Middleton to Goolwa stretch, and Myponga gets a look-in too.
Colin Thiele, such a great Aussie writer. Pretty keen to see storm boy for sure. Things down this neck of the woods are a bit more like one of his other books “February Dragon” at the moment. Looking forward to it being over.

Crazy to think it wasn't that long ago and i was often in areas of Sumatra just south of Aceh during that era.(Nias, Telos, Mentawais)
It's just really weird and almost hard to see Indonesians fighting Indonesians, i support Indonesias right to Aceh but also hard not to feel for those people, hard to see Indonesias suffering.
I don't believe in a god, but pretty crazy the tsunami changed things, it's almost like a strange gift for Indonesia to sort out the issue like a cleansing.
I don't have anything to do with Aceh so know little of the real current situation or thoughts of the people, but hard to imagine these people can just get on with life and forgive and forget.
Wow agree what a raw amazing doco, im very ignorant to all things Aceh, but ID whats your reasoning for "i support Indonesias right to Aceh" sounds like they have always wanted independance (as per East Timor), why not allow it?. Other Islands such as Bali appear to be proud to be part of Indo, but not these guys.

Indonesia was formed from the areas the Dutch occupied which included Aceh, so it's Indonesia's legal right to control Aceh, so i support that.
East Timor is different because it was never under Dutch rule.
What i was going to say but forget too yesterday, is i wonder how the Aceh people viewed the tsunami?
I wonder if they saw it as a sign from god or something that they were not happy?
Because interestingly the areas they talk about a lot in this film the south and west areas were the main areas hit by the Tsunami.
And it seemed a real turning point.

@indo-dreaming, seems like the Aceh havent had much choice in it, they wernt happy been ruled by the Dutch , they wernt happy being rulled by the Japs, now they arnt happy being ruled by the Indo's. Is this a small minority of the Aceh people thoughts or majority? Is there any other states within Indo with the same thoughts that were part of the Dutch occupation.?

I don't think anyone was really happy with being colonised by Dutch or Japanese, although now if you talk to Indonesians it's pretty rare to find any that don't like Dutch or Japanese, some even now look back and say the Dutch made Indonesia.
It's actually weird how forgiving Indonesian people are, i have no idea how Aceh people feel, but i wouldn't be surprised if now many are happy to be part of Indonesia.
Probably the important thing to understand is that for a very very long time Indonesia was very Javacentric as most of the population live on Java, so much of the income came from outer areas of Indonesia that are very resource rich but never went back to these areas. (nothing was every built, schools, roads, ins electricity, etc
Under the previous government SBY and even more so now under Jokowi this whole approach has totally changed 360 and now the government puts extra focus on all these other provinces and outer islands etc
Its actually amazing the infrastructure developments that have been going on, so many new airports etc around Indonesia but in places like Nias, Telos, Mentawais its crazy the new infrastructure that has gone down in the last ten years especially last five years or so, new roads, concert paths, jetty's, toilets for villages, new ports, new schools, phone towers, mains electricity where there was none.
ID the spending might be more in line with the growth Indonesia has seen and the size in GDP.

Yeah 100% that is a factor in the major areas, and all new major airports (pretty much every major airport in Indonesia has be rebuilt or major renovations in last ten years)
And yeah 100% the Indonesian economy is growing at a crazy rate, i wish i could find it, there was a article that had like an active counter prediction and major economies, and Indonesia just keeps on going up and up towards 2050 to number 4 or something , its crazy when you watch it.
But the infrastructure for all these outer provinces is a bit different, its a intentional movement more about politics than anything, to get votes and keep everyone happy and keep Indonesia united etc

Finished watching The Crown on Netflix recently.
Never would have thought I’d enjoy it . The royals never interested me previously but it’s not bad at all.
Interesting watching the tail end of the devolution of the Monarchy, from divine gods with absolute power to the modern day struggle for relevance. The descent into having to accommodate the proles as they’ve watched other monarchies around the world falter and disintegrate and their existential angst at how long their own remaining power can be sustained is well documented.
Also worth watching as it’s basically a historical documentary overlayed on their personal and professional lives. Like any good program it allows you to both like and dislike the characters. Real life is seldom as black and white as absolute heroes and villains and it’s refreshing when a program reflects this truth.
Well acted with the great production values that you take for granted with quality TV these days.
It’s the monarchy as soap opera and historical documentary.
Definitely worth the effort.
