I just read about those Red Sea attacks Blowin. They caught and killed two sharks after the first couple of attacks, one of them was identified by marks on its dorsal fin as being responsible. A few days later there were more attacks. I don't see that anyone is dismissing the one shark hypothesis out of hand but there doesn't seem to be any more evidence for it than for other explanations.

Read this drivel typical of shark “ science “. BTW the facts stating that the bite correlated to that of a bull shark in the New Jersey case is utter tripe.*

https://www.diveplanit.com/marine-environment/debunking-myth-rogue-shark/

Particularly this little nugget of poo :

We asked Dr Alicia Lloyd, a marine scientist at Manly Sea Life Sanctuary to tell us the truth about “Rogue Sharks”. Here’s what she had to say.

“The myth of the “rogue shark” was based on the idea that once a shark had “attacked” a human it would then acquire a taste for human blood.

There are two problems with this statement.

Firstly, would a shark actually “attack” a human, rather than take an inquisitive bite?
And secondly, would a shark continue to target humans as a result of this interaction?”

See what I mean , BB ? Scientists won’t even admit or acknowledge that sharks eat people . They think it’s a quaint , yet dangerous folksy myth !

The whole premise of their disputing the single shark theory is based on the sophistry that sharks dont eat humans. Where do you start when crew peddling that garbage are the “ credible experts “ ?

Point being , BB , that scientists would rather lie outright than admit that sharks eat people , Despite the dozens of eye witness cases of humans being consumed . To consider that a shark would do it repeatedly is NEVER to be considered.

That is why the single shark theory is not given the appropriate amount of scientific attention it deserves , not a lack of evidence.

I think you will find Blowin that in the vast majority of attacks the person isn't actually eaten.

Blowin's picture
Blowin's picture
Blowin Tuesday, 6 Nov 2018 at 10:22pm

Many , many people have been eaten by sharks.

Some sharks may make a habit of it.

How does the fact that most attacks don’t see the person eaten alter these other two at all ?

Geez , BB , for someone who prides themselves on an enquiring mind you’re certainly doing a good job of avoiding considering all possibilities.

Science is continuously telling us “ we have so much to learn about sharks , there’s so much we don’t know about sharks .” But they then choose to ignore some things they DO know . Such as the fact that sharks fucking eat people !

You just tried to dodge the truth yourself . Why would you do that ?

If a shark attacks and eats the body with no trace and no witness it is chalked up as a drowning statistic.

If a shark attacks and the victim gets away it’s not considered an attempt at eating the person.

If a person is attacked and they lose both their legs or a large chunk of flesh , the victim isn’t considered to have been eaten. But where do you reckon the missing legs got to ? Here’s a hint as to a likely location : It’s very dark , extremely acidic and smells very sharky.

The mayor in Jaws did alright . His initial stance was no different from that of most modern Scientists....denial.

Then he stood up and hired Quint.

Quint ....we all knew who he was , all knew how he made his living , he took that vengeful fish to task and died doing what he loved second most of all in life. His first love being the love of swimming with bow legged women.

factotum's picture
factotum's picture
factotum Wednesday, 7 Nov 2018 at 6:59pm

Nah, the Mayor was a fuck-wit. Total. Only thinking about the tourism cash, his own political popularity and thus, survival.

Let's go through the highly popular fictional film.

In actual fact, it's the scientists - first, the medical examiner who tells the copper that it could have been a shark that killed the first victim, and the marine biologist (played by Richard Dreyfuss) who says it's definitely a shark, a rare shark (that fact excites him!) - that are on the ball.

The copper (who is the 'everyman' in the tale; the audience shares his point-of-view throughout) listens to and believes them both, because he doesn't know shit, and readily owns up to that. He wants to shut the beaches down so they can find out what's going on.

The Mayor meanwhile first wants to keep the scientist's opinions and ideas on the down-low, so the tourism bucks aren't affected, then get the copper to lie about the cause of death!

After Dreyfuss the scientist is proven right a few days later, when another death occurs, and this time is obviously a shark, the Mayor puts out the call for all the local fishos to keep an eye out, and get amongst it. This is when old Quint the mercenary comes in, and wants $10,000 to catch and kill. The Mayor is all about the coin, and says that's way too high. Then a couple of dudes catch a tiger shark, the Mayor proclaims all's good, and the beaches can remain open, even after Dreyfuss the scientist says the shark that's been killing people is a way bigger than normal great white, let alone a tiger.

On the 4th of July, the Mayor encourages people to swim at the beaches, and Dreyfuss the scientist is proven right again when the shark bites a man's leg off. The copper, whose kid witnessed it all, and is now losing his shit emotionally through fear, pleads for the Mayor to hire Quint the mercenary to find the shark. And now, and only now, in true conservative politician style, does the Mayor agree, because his own kids were at that beach too and could've been victims themselves.

And so Quint, Dreyfuss the scientist, and the copper go out in the too-small boat ready to do whatever it takes to find the shark. And we know how that turns out!

*spoiler alert*

Quint gets munched, the copper shoots and kills the shark, the boat sinks, and he and Dreyfuss the scientist paddle back home.

Quite a fictional tale, hey?

So anyway, back to the real world, I'd say the Mayor is kinda like Colin Barnett. The fear-driven, all-about-the-coin-and-his-own-political-survival politician responsible for killing a whole lot of 'anything-but-great-white' sharks, just before a WA state election.

But unlike the fictional Mayor in the fictional Jaws 2 - and the truly "vengeful fish" as you put it, Blow In; the literal son of Jaws 1! - our poor old Barney lost!

Oh yeah, here's a piece about the author of the book Jaws (which was a mass best-seller...FEAR sells!). It's for those readers out there:

“There was a spasm of macho lunacy after Jaws came out, and I take full responsibility for that." - Peter Benchley

Coaster's picture

Coaster Wednesday, 7 Nov 2018 at 6:38pm

And the story in the film was different to the one in the book. In the printed version of the tale, the marine biologist, who wasn’t such a nice guy and had an affair with the sheriff’s wife during his time in the town, was killed by the shark as was Quint.

In the final stage of the story, the sheriff was the last one swimming (the boat had gone down) and the shark had lined him up for the kill but the numerous drums attached to it by harpoons brought it to a stop and it drowned within a few yards of the sheriff.

But back to reality, the mayor of Ballina just appeared on the six o’clock news. He said shark nets don’t work because they only caught 3 sharks while they were deployed; they removed the nets in February this year. “The smart drums lines are still there”, he said.

And from the story in SMH:
“Don Munro, former president of the Le-Ba (Lennox-Ballina) Boardriders Club, of which the victim was involved, said the 2015 attack is still fresh in the community's mind.

"We don't want to relive it," he said. "The more we talk about it the more it affects our economy because it scares people."

According to him, it's business as usual for locals.

"The surfers won’t be put off, they’ll be back in the water once the curfew is over," he said.

"The community is bummed and shocked but there is no panicking at this stage. We hope it is a one-off."

He’s a bit of an optimist with that last statement, given the history. And the mayor wants to protect marine life. How the roles change.

@Stunet, I stand corrected. Should've stuck with fuck-knuckle.

@Coaster, yes, the book is a stinker. Bad books make better films? I'm thinking of Stephen King for one.

My first thought afterwards was that a fact-checking department would've been given a real work-out!! And with no over-time penalty rates (thanks Mal!)

I also thought the best question of the night - were they vetted? Seemed pretty tepid, even by Q & A standards - was whether our new PM ProMo was a Steven Bradbury or a Niccolò Machiavelli in regards to Malcolm's ousting. His response was clueless, witless, and most telling for that witless cluelessness!

Blow In: "Your policies were fine..."???

Really?!

Hang on, do you mean Turnbull's actual policies he sort of owned - well, waffled about - before he assassinated Abbott?
