First up, where's the the original? Still in Haliewa? 
Yes, she's up on the wall in a cabinet with the helmet at Barry Kanaiaupuni's Quiksilver Boardriders Store in Haleiwa.

How long is the original?
7’8” x 17 7/8” x 2 1/8”.

The spray and planshape look identical to the original, what about the rest of the dimensions?
Directed by Pat and with the masterly help of Simon Anderson we made a survey on the board's little brother, a 7’0”. It's still in excellent condition and owned by my good friend Leigh Moulds. I used to get a new quiver at the start of every winter, usually up to six boards all separated by increments of 4”.

The one for auction, and to be ridden in the Heritage Heat, is pumped up a little in some dimensions for this 53-year-old paddler, but width and thickness are the only areas effected by these changes. Every other aspect: bottom curves, rails, reverse vee, and fins - white fibreglass original templates masterly created by Greg Trotter at Soar - are replicated. FCS Fusion fins had to be used and not glass ins as delivery time became an issue.

This is by far the closest version made as a replica to the original that I have seen yet. And there's been a few.

What do you plan to do with the board after the Pipe Masters Heritage Heat? 
The current plan is to hand the board to Hans Hagen of Mauli Ola Foundation and the board will sit within their fundraising efforts as an auction item whenever it suits them.

Back to the heat: It’s 12 foot Pipe, Backdoor doesn’t exist underneath a whitewater maelstrom, where are you gonna sit?
Looking for that Second Reef A-frame, dodging the wash throughs. There's always a re-aquaitance period with her, and you never know how long that may take.

Hypothetical time: A set stands up tall on Second Reef holding its energy for the First Reef detonation, Derek Ho is 15 foot further out and turns to paddle. Do you: 
A) let him go and wish him well on his travels,
B) turn to paddle and block his path,
C) take the wave as if there’s no-one else in the water.

None of the above! I'll give him much deserved respect and look for my opportunity…but most of all, check where he’s positioning himself.

And the question everyone wants to know, will you be wearing size 26 boardies?
No, size 30” now.

Postscript: Tom didn't get to replicate 'that' snap during the Heritage Heat, however he did score a 9.60 for a great barrel and easily won the heat.
