"Last year was a bit of an after thought," says Maui filmmaker Dan Norkunas. "Seemed like everyone still had an El Nino hangover and we were neck deep on trying to finalise a documentary. We took breaks from cutting our new film Nervous Laughter by filming, but there were no trips, no hyped swells, and no real concise thoughts on producing any new edits. Luckily for us this past year still provided unique days and we were able to cut a new piece entitled Black Wave."

to me Albee Layer is taking the sport to new levels like Jamie O'Brien did 5 years ago. Innovating in paddling in deep & taking off late at Jaws, Inventing new airs, and that drop in the above vid at 2:53 has to be pushing the limits of the heaviest paddle-into a slab. Granted he gets a lucky early entry but once the wave steps it matches some of the biggest paddle efforts i've seen at places like shippies & chopes etc.

Only another surfer can appreciate how good this guy is. I watch a guy like that doing what he did and think maybe I should give it away... nah just makes me want to get out of the office and into the surf. Awesome vid!

I'm mean fuck! You don't see many beachs in Australia where there is a guy launching multiple 15ft flips and shit of 4-6ft waves.
I think of this guy paddled out at you local beachy on a chunky day you would paddle in with your tail between your legs!
Much the same as the gaint waves he surfs.
