Attack of the Giant Squid! - video

Looks like even the cephalopods have had enough of the burgeoning SUP population. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out well for the large marine invertebrate.

That's sad- let it die with some dignity.

Reminds me of the octopus scene from Oldboy:

If you've never seen Oldboy then I highly recommend a viewing. Preferably solo, no talking or disturbances of any kind, don't read anything about it lest someone spoils it, and make sure you sandbag your mind - 'cause it's sure to be blown.

One of Quentin Tarantino's all time fave films, if that counts for anything.

That the climax to the movie ?

I'll watch - joyfully , strangely enough - as long as it's not a spoiler.

Not sure about the old unscrupulous Asian stereotype. Maybe incomprehensible is a more appropriate word.

Then again they'd be more than surprised to see someone performing the dance of the flaming arseholes.

PS I'm glad you're a fellow Tarantino fan , but did you know he LOVED Big Wednesday ? He said that surfers didnt deserve to be represented by such a great film. Not a fan of surfers , Quentin?

You're spot on Zen. Why bring it in for everyone to look at only to hack its head off while still alive. Can't even eat it as it's full of ammonia. Let the fish have a feed. Kooks. I dislike SUP's even more now.

The guy in the video is actually a prone surfer from South Africa on the World Surf League big wave tour, some rather poor journalism at Swellnet if you ask me to even be promoting this video without referencing James Taylors actual comments as to what he was doing with the squid AND then attempting to demonize SUP at the same time.

G'day Maxe, I made no reference to this Big wave legend and his sport which I love and respect. As a surfer and fisherman, I believe that noosing an animal which was clearly trying to dive down away from him was dragged to the shore and had it's head cut off is plain wrong. That weren't fishing for food. Leave it be. Surfers and SUP's have well known indifferences in the surf and we've had to regulate lineups too many times because of the lack of respect to the general rules in the surf which don't comply with most SUP's. That's why I'm not a fan. What would David Attenborough do? Not that.

Huh? Maxe, I'm flattered you considered the two sentences as 'journalism', but the fact is that there wasn't any accompanying text with the video.

Hnmm as someone who has worked at sea killing beautiful marlin, tuna, swordfish and count less others! And also enjoys recreational fishing!
I have learned respect for the creatures I have killed for you in the supermarket.
Im not sure if he caught it to eat, bait or fun!
If it was for fun he's to old it's something kids do and regret as they grow old!
Food! Fair game any squid can be tenderised over time or with technic.
Bait? Well yes I would take it too.

I'm interested to know

It was clearly near dead to start with look liked it had been hit by a boat or bitten by another animal.

The choice would have been to let it die at sea or bring it in either way it was going to die, possibly bringing it in and cutting it's head off would give it a quicker death rather than slowly dying in the sun.

If it was alive and healthy you would never just catch it like that, those things can move very quick when they want too.

Edit: just googled it squid have even been reported at moving as fast as 11.2 metres a second, they suck in water and push it out like a jet.

Looks to a be a male squid, that probably got into a blue with some others for the rights to impregnate a female, or just ran into the wrong woman,, That, I believe, at the end of the clip is the squids "detachable penis" or hectocotylus used to inject sperm into the females mantle. Some squid are also known to try to inseminate other males out of desperation,, so that SUP rider is lucky that squid wasnt a bit healthier and didnt mistake him for just another bare bum in the shower,

Now that would have been a story, a good one.

any keen fisherman knows that fish absolutely love squid/cuttlefish. just walk along the beach and look for the big cuttlebones that have been picked clean. no idea why they bought it to shore but without accompanying text i can only speculate that they are uneducated in this particular area and i am judging them fuckwits. give me a good reason why they bought it to shore and ill take that back. thats like taking a nice big Tbone and throwing it in the ocean for no good reason.

Less is more.

Look, appreciate, if you have to take a photo do so, but leave the poor fella to die in peace.

We go into the water primarily to commune with nature and come back feeling refreshed.

Not sure any squid dies in peace,{ pieces maybe}, or even lives in peace. Not taking anything away from anyones comments about leaving the thing alone to complete it's natural life cycle , I agree and I personally would not have interfered. .If other squid or marine predators havent finished it off then that squid would probably die from parasites that are common in all older pelagic squid. Its death was never going to be dignified. But to be dragged spitting and dying onto the sand for the self gratifying notions of some hippy minded SUP marine expert must've been the final indignity .Perhaps they thought they were simply euthanising "the poor creature" and discussed this over some kale sandwiches afterwards , but it does appear to lend more to morbid curiosity and showboating than any actual green ideology. I imagine that Attenborough gives this two thumbs down

Very true. Maybe dignity was a poor choice of words.

Perhaps respect may have been a better choice. To be hacked to pieces on the sand with no intention to eat it showed a lack of respect in my eyes. Let Mother Nature take care of it.

Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story (SUP bashing) Swellnet, ......maybe you can sell out to Rupert Murdoch, just pathetic quite frankly, the true story is here , yes on a SUP site heaven forbid! http://www.supconnect.com/news/giant-squid-crawls-onto-a-paddle-board-in...

okay his intentions were a bit better than originally thought but his idea of "It felt like the best thing to do at the time." and mine are totally different. he states only 5 have ever washed up on shore, which reinforces my opinion. and as for it wrapping its tentacles around his board, well he was fucking with it before that happened, lucky he didnt come in contact with his beak. hope they put it back in the ocean after they killed it so at least the local fish got a feed.

Speaking off "journalism" maxe ,The opening to your link is a beauty ,The article asks "What would you do if a Giant Squid started wrapping its tentacles around your paddle board like the Kraken"..and goes on to say "there have even been stories of them attacking small whales and now Taylor's 'Naish paddle board'.", with an advertising link to Naish paddle boards in the text. And you expect anyone to take it seriously from there.? So , no , lets not let the truth get in the way of a good story as you put it. If you want to interfere in something like that then give the appropriate fisheries guys a call. I,m not offended by what was done , just think it was largely unnecessary .

I agree, so just so we all know where we stand, World Surf League surfer James Taylor unnecessary films the death of a giant squid, just happened to be on a SUP when he did it.

I think the footage itself was cool, aside from the squid roping rodeo scene and subsequent beaching, not everyone has Attenboroughs camera crew on standby ,or his PR manager for that matter. And personally I dont care what he was riding or what his surfing credentials are. Could've been a kook on a kayak , makes no difference.

Life Expectancy

Much of the life of these reclusive creatures is unknown, but scientists have been able to study the remains of those that occasionally wash up on beaches around the world. Unlike large mammals such as the elephant or whales, the Giant Squid appear to grow very rapidly from the time they are hatched from their egg. Small concretions or hardened cells have been found inside the organ responsible for equilibrium. These concretions would effect the ability of the animal to swim and hunt. This indicates that these animals live for no more than five years. This fast growth would require enormous amounts of food.
