Secrets of Desert Point: Trailer - video

Unlike Uluwatu, G'Land, Nias, or the whole Mentawai chain, there's never been much mystique around the early days at Desert Point. Despite being one of the best waves in the world its history is a bit of a blank.

Now that Desert Point is a 'destination' and there's little left to lose, American Bill Heick has decided to fill the vacuum with an impending doco on the early days at Deserts.

Yeah that's OK, let them tell you the stories BUT for christs sake only this time and this place as it is still ferrul, shallow, hollow than hell and the heat you can keep. But then you have to suffer a little to have lived. Plenty of other secrets out there that don't need the attention of archive, memory or even the remoteness of how to get there. Just don't let VIRGIN airlines get you there with 23 kgs MAX baggage. travel light, travel fast and don't trip over your passport as you struggle for the exit aisle huh haha !

Be interesting to see the movie's take on what led up to the machete incident. I've heard a few different stories.

Crg I was on a boat at the time at lombongan on the way to dp. Story I heard was the gang they mentioned came into camp and stole all the valuables. One guy charged after them and was consequently sliced with a machete. No boats at deserts yet so they rode a bike to mataram hospital. So the story goes.

PS how do we make deserts lowkey again? We need a few more decoys like Skeleton bay.

That's a version I've heard...perhaps simplified or perhaps the simple truth. Another further version is the attack wasn't a random theft incident but a retribution for the surfers dealings with some locals?
I'll never know I wasn't there then...

Actual know the guy personally his name is Blair and is from Victoria. Had some good camera gear taken and even he said he should not of ran after them but he did. Just a surfer that made a bad decision.

Thanks surfer1971...it never ceases to amaze me how BS stories spread around...I'd heard it as gospel from a self styled "Indo vet" that the attack was revenge for the surfers roughing up a local lady who was providing her feminine services...they didn't pay and slapped her round. Gossip gossip gossip...

The key to keeping a break low key is to keep Kelly or anyone from the ripcurl search away from it

Stayed at Deserts for a week in the early 90's (long after these guys). Had to walk in from a village over the hill a few kilometres away. Slept in board bags and camped in those basic little huts. We got there for the anticipated full moon swell (long time pre-swell forecasting)....and it was basically flat all week. Maybe got waist high sets on one day for a few hours. Not a lot of other things to do at Deserts if it's flat. Though there were Mushrooms.....
By the end of the week everyone was super bummed out and really irritable, because we had been at one of the world's best waves by ourselves for a week and got donuts. It was hard to swallow. But that's surfing. Great adventure. I remember it was a magical place in the evenings as the sun was setting.

G'day,it'll b interesting to see the movie.
on subject but off topic kinda?i've been really sick last couple weeks.its been happening 1or2times a year.i swear its malaria relapse.i can feel it coming on.i know its coming, the feeling, the taste, the freezing, the boiling fever, eyes hurting, super sensitive to light, vommit+runs.soul shattering torture sessions that i wouldn't whish on anyone.

whats fustrating is i go get so messed up i've ended up in the hospital a couple times last 3years.me complete blood test come back showing nothing!i've been asking them to test for everything.quacks telling me twice me bloods in remarkable shape with another saying my bloods in excellent condition.i've had 2strains of malaria, vivax and falciparum.i thought i was over it, all better for at least a decade.the problems have really started the last 4years since moving back to sth oz from the tropics.climate change?
i'm writing this hoping to get info,Clam has been my chief adviser on the subject years ago n i was wondering if others suffer relaspse and are they detectable?wasnt sure if the topic had already been on SNforums?any info/opinions much appreaciated.thnx

Gday Troppo , its impossible to know really . I had a same thing happen where the hospital could not find any malaria positive within days of a malaria fever . Its not uncommon, i think the parasite larvae have to be released in your blood and a fever for it to be positive.
Other times i felt ok and the hospital did get positive results, so its not clear how it works ??
U probably need treatment to knock it out of your organs . I haven't researched the latest info for ages so im not a malaria guru anymore.

I copped a bad muffler burn trying to get up that gravelly hill towards deserts. Probably not the best place to learn how to ride a scooter. I found the surf jaw droppingly perfect and stupidly crowded, lots of entitled drop ins from one Hawaiian in particular.
