World surf legends and leading academics to converge on the Gold Coast for the International Surfing Symposium 13th & 14th March 2017, in association with Global Wave Conference.

In just under a month world surf legends and the odd academic will converge on the Gold Coast for a two day conference on ocean conservation, surf culture and related themes.

The inaugural International Surfing Symposium will be akin to a surfing summit attracting world champions, cult legends, learned university folk, and concerned punters like you and me.

Talks will be given by Peter Townend, Rabbit, Tim Baker, Rebecca Olive, Felipe Pomar, Dan Ware, Dick van Straalen....really, there's too many to name here so check the program below.

Griffith University will host the second day of the conference with highly qualified surfing professors such as Professor Ralph Buckley, Professor Danny O’Brien, Professor Donna Weeks, and UK’s Dr Greg Borne amongst others. Dr Rob Hales of Griffith University will chair a panel to discuss shark management options and social license.

The Queensland State Government Minister for Tourism and Major Events, the Honourable Kate Jones MP, has welcomed the first International Surfing Symposium on the Gold Coast.

“This event opens Queensland’s doors to informed discussions around surf zone and environmental preservation, as well as promoting the cultural and community benefits of surfing areas in the State.  Leading into the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro events on the Gold Coast, this business event is a valuable resource for Queensland’s tourism economy and we welcome all our visitors from interstate and around the world.  The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support events such as this through Tourism and Events Queensland, which support visitation and expenditure in Queensland, showcase the Gold Coast and its surrounding destinations, and create jobs.”

The symposium is open to everyone. For more information and registration go to www.goldcoastworldsurfingreserve.com  or contact Andy Mackinnon on 0412 754 974

Panel discussion on Shark management options looks interesting.

Can't see any program for artificial breaks or modification of local geography to develop surf breaks. Can only see management guidelines. Certainly relevant for Qld with its natural resources.

Sounds like a potentially constructive and informative forum. Surely events like this would benefit other surf zones/tourists precincts around the country.

...me too on would be very interested to hear about "advanced reef design" - philosophically I'm more aligned with hearing about these development opportunities, when compared to artificial wave pools. ...

Yep, missed that 3-3.20 session. I was just feeling that with the crowds we are getting, the feeling regarding cams and crowds and locals, etc, I would think that 'building' surf breaks where the people are is essential. Just as we build facilities for virtually all other sports, including water. Good start though to get some discussion going, great.

No mention of unleased boards. I get the feeling this is fairly important, but possibly overlooked. I see sustainability of board manufacturing gets a run. Sus tainable is a real biggy lately.

Jeez I was getting pretty keen, but for $100 for one day, $150 for two, I don't think so.
Shame as there's some great stuff on the agenda.

Why can't this be streamed or recorded so a network of ideas can be then utilised?

Hako, seems like you were right about the probability of your comment getting deleted.

...and I was correct about the probability it being a typical, narrow-minded, hate-filled criticism. That being his raison d'etre on Swellnet. Tolerated in some threads, not in others.

Time to put the pressure on Tom Tate and crew. Big event. Media exposure. Time to create manmade breaks along bilinga. Get dozers or beach front end loaders to shape A frame peaks on low tide and even put in fences to catch sand in peaks or as rights based on natural sand flow. Even drop sausage groynes in. Easy to move if need be. This now all able to access all three levels of govt grant's especially with Tokyo 2020 and the area being a World Surfing Reserve. This would have to be a major topic one would think that needs to be discussed about the future and the world wide popularity of surfing and what better place to show initiative and foresight then at this Synopsium. It highlights surfing's integral part in the social ,tourism and educational and economic importance to many communities and their future growth and potential
prosperity.

read the agenda a couple of times , and see that Mark Price is speaking on Sustainable surfboards , and I guess Kelly slater as Mark works for him at Fire wire.
For a Company that makes its boards in Asia , and then puts them on consignment in the USA and Australia , and then represents the Global Surfboard industry , I find it hypocritical when we all know that the Consignment of surfboards , or any other product is "unethical business practices.
I could not find any representation by Sustainable surf a USA non for profit organization , please correct me if I didn't pick it up , but surely all the chit chat that this symposium offers , shouldn't we really be addressing the toxic surfboard situation , surely we will not be using them at the Olympics?

You mean the Fukushima Olympics.
Very appropriate to have toxic surfboards added to the Cesium 137 in the water.
