Australia Day Forecast

In a week's time we'll be celebrating Australia Day. Love it or loathe it, many people use Australia Day to escape the city for a long weekend.

So with this in mind, what's the surf forecast looking like for the 26th Jan?

Well, for most of the country you'll be better off leaving the boards at home and making extra room for the esky and BBQ.

On the East Coast, the poor run will continue. Onshore winds and weak windswells are due from Queensland to Sydney. Protected bays and points should offer some refuge from the onshores across northern NSW and south-east Qld though. The far southern NSW coast should see cleaner conditions during the morning of the 26th and a small southerly swell should be coming in around 2-3ft.

Victoria will offer a bit of swell across the open beaches, but lingering onshore winds in the wake of a change on Wednesday are likely to create a few wobbles. The wind will go more variable from mid-morning onwards. Expect easing 4-5ft sets east of Melbourne, while the Surf Coast should ease from 2-3ft.

In Tasmania the South Arm is expected to be flat, similarly so will the East Coast, so plan a day of fishing or watching the cricket.

Around Adelaide, the Mid Coast should be clean but the swell will be tiny and easing from 1-1.5ft. The South Coast isn't looking much better, with a touch more swell but onshore winds.

Heading over to Western Australia, and conditions are due to be clean with morning offshores, but again the swell will be lacking. Perth and Mandurah are looking tiny to flat, while the Margaret River reefs will be struggling to top 3ft.

So all in all it's not the best outlook for Australia Day, but enjoy the festivities, however you choose to celebrate.

There won’t be much of this..

But plenty of this - taken from the Swellnet trip to Yorke Peninsula last year

Nice one Blindboy. May 8 (M8....maaate) would be easy to remember as well as offering some larrikin symbolism. Maybe a bit cold for crays on the beach in southern states though!

I agree tb, it is time to move on from a national day which does more to divide than unify.

Why can't Australia Day be left in recognition of white Australia's creation of a nation that is the envy of the world ?

Whoops - pride is bad.

If you're white.

Blindboy - you should petition for a national day of shame. All the whiteys can get kicked by the Blackfellas because we usurped them and also by all the immigrants that are usurping us because their entitlement hasn't yet totally extended to eradicating us from any historical recognition of contributing anything positive towards the most harmonious and successful multicultural society on Earth.

Here's a slogan for ya : Aussie , Aussie , Aussie, Shame, Shame, Shame.

PS - I actually support the transfer of Australia Day to another date.

You two are the only ones who have mentioned shame or guilt. My point is that a national day should be a day of unity. The current date causes division, so change it. That is the complete argument.

BB, the national day should not be a day of shame or guilt. From my experiences, Anzac Day gives not only a day recognition for all Aussies, but the spirit regardless of colour, or background. It also suggests the building or creation that is the envy of the world.

Well maybe if Anzac Day also recognises those who died in the wars of colonisation that were fought all over Australia.

Seems like there's plenty of room for compromise here especially as the 26th January has little to do with the nation of Australia as such.

The country of Australia came into existence on the 1st January right?

No, we should hold it in winter to fuck with triple j's hottest 100.

But in all seriousness, I don't understand why people want to hold on to this date so much. As you said, 26 January has more to do with Britain than Australia. Seems like a simple request to change to a date for all Australians.
