The persuasive way to score epic waves!

Annual membership is just $79.95 a year.

Only $6.65 a month,

or $1.55 a week,

or $0.22 a day...!

That's how we're supposed to sell this subscription gig, be an economic rationalist, break it right down to granular level then compare. So, a membership costs just 22 cents a day, that's equal to...shit, I don't know anything you can buy for 22 cents.

But regardless of what you could buy we're not going down that road. We're uneasy economists. So rather than tell you how many cents it costs per day we'll tell you what a subscription to Swellnet gets you.

The first thing you'll see is less ads. No more ads on the surf cameras, no more ads on the mobile apps. Speaking of, those apps are for iOS and Android.

The surf cameras also shift to long timeout for members. Rather than taking a punt with a short grab of vision, you can watch your local for an extended period and see what's really happening in the water. Plus, our entire network consists of HD-quality cameras, and that number is growing all the time. You can watch our surfcam vision in full screen as well as on your mobile.

Swellnet already has Australia's best network of surfcams - positioned high for clearer viewing, and with low light capability for dawn patrol decision making – and we'll soon be increasing our reach. New cameras are coming for the Sunshine Coast, Northern NSW, Sydney, and Victoria.

And as the NBN continues to roll out across the country, we’ll upgrade the quality of our streams to High Definition. We already have fibre links in South Australia, Newcastle and Coffs Harbour, with several Victorian and Queensland surfcams scheduled to be upgraded this year.

Members also get access to our 16 day forecast. Watch those storms from way out as the days count down to impact. Bluff your friends with your newfound knowledge. Also, unlike other forecast sites all our data points are calibrated to adjust for local differences. Those mysterious swell magnets are reflected in our wave modelling.

Swellnet's 16 day forecast for Cloudbreak

Another thing to think about is this: If you like what Swellnet does, what we stand for, and the community that congregates here, then your membership helps to keep the ride going. It allows us to make more forecasting tools and cover the stories and issues you want to read about.

Choose you own level of membership, from monthly if you're just about to take a surf trip and need swell information, to quarterly if you're a regular traveller, up to yearly if you want to be totally covered.

Lastly, if you sign up for annual membership then you go into a running to win a trip for two to the Banyak Islands aboard Pulse Surf Charters. It's a 12 day trip, with airfares included (from any Australian capital city), plus all food and drinks sorted. That's $9,000 for next to nix.

Or not quite nix, it's 22 cents a day.

Stu, nice but one question: can subscriptions be suspended if you are out of the water for a while or overseas or for whatever reason? Its possibly the answer is in the terms but I'm a lazy reader after the excitement that was last weekend. Cheers

Trying to find out for you, Floyd.

Sec...

Floyd, the way subscriptions work is that you subscribe for a certain period of time (month, three months, year etc).

You can cancel your subscription at any time but it won't take effect until the subscription's term is completed (so, if you signed up for an Annual subscription today, you'll remain subscribed until this time next year, even if you cancelled tomorrow).

If you do cancel your subscription, your Swellnet account - i.e. username etc - will remain intact after the term is complete, so you can still comment on the forums etc and access all of the standard stuff.

And then if you decide you'd like to resume subscribing to Swellnet Pro, you can do that at any time - and it'll kick off a new subscription period.

It sounds like you're asking whether a subscription can be "paused" for a period of time, and in that case - no, unfortunately it can't (in the same way you can't pause your internet connection, gas connection, electricity connection because you're "away from home for a few weeks").

Does that answer your question?

If the trip includes international airfares then it's more than $9k's worth. Easy over $11k as the boat alone now costs over $5k per person.

Thanks Ben, yeah my question was about pausing. Its no deal breaking in my eyes but I'm aware other on-line subscriptions can be paused. I agree the annual subs are pretty cheap.

Another question: If I subscribe for an annual subscription is that a one off or on its annual expiry date is it automatically renewed? Sorry for all these questions but I've also had this automatic renewal thingie happen to me elsewhere (not sure how really given I thought credit card details like that couldn't be stored).

Cheers Ben

No problems. Yeah, our subs do auto-renew (as stated in the T's and C's) however you should receive a reminder email the week prior that the renewal is about to happen, which should give you time to cancel if you so choose.

I am a massive fan of the pro with the long range 16 days. Been on board since the beginning, (leg rope still going too). It's a long way out and the East Coast especially changes a lot, but if you can track a trend or system and follow it through then you know you're on a winner. Contra if it chops and changes.

Also been screen grabbing the different swells and then analysing in hindsight. Especially good when WSL roll into town and you can pick up the nuances of the SN model and others. Long period Cloudbreak add 2 feet on SN model, mid period Tahiti swell best some examples.

The WAMs are probably the best going around. You can pick up Africa by looking at the Mentawai forecast too.

Floyd sorry mate to be honest even if you are injured or overseas for a bit I don't think its fair to pull back on your original deal which was a year subscription. OK to ask though and if Ben and co are kind enough to give you a suspended subscription then fine, but its not the most amazing business model unless you think that there's some goodwill to be gained. If money is tight I feel bad for you but you paid it out already, and if you are injured or overseas then its a good way to keep in the loop. Plus most O/S spots are covered by Swellnet except for america (from memory, I haven't cross referenced this one). Many men especially when moving away from their core communities end up experiencing social isolation and loneliness. Keep connected - thats my advice anyway...

Are you able to pause other online subscriptions? I'm curious.. Do you have an example?

I remember trying to do this with a few companies before (Internet etc) when I went overseas, and they all said no. I vaguely recall some company allowing something along these lines (might have been gym membership?) but they instead had a monthly 'account hold' charge (which was a percentage of the usual fee) while you were away.

I suppose this approach may be beneficial for those kinds of companies with hundreds of thousands of customers, who wish to differentiate themselves from their competitors - but Swellnet is a very small business (four full time employees) of which the development and implementation costs are too much to make it worthwhile for us.

hey ben, i'm no longer a premium member but i reckon i was able to pause with Starva although skimming through their T&Cs this morning I cannot find anything about that ....... maybe I've been blowing hot air maybe they have changed their terms ?? ....... and you are absolutely correct about your comments on gym memberships.

Best deal ever. I check all the surf spots where I have lived and still surf over the last 40 years (Newcastle/ Merewether, JBay, Yamba, Mid Coast SA and now Torquay stretch) on a regular basis.(Been retired for 3 years) Its great recognising mates on surf report posts and reading the different styles of surf reports (Love your work DA & NF) However the variety of Latest News keeps me informed on what is happening from underground soul surfing, hipsters and WSL surfing. Some Forums also provide great comic relief.

One thing you may want to investigate is that when I subscribed (only a week ago) it would not allow me to use my old username, I had to make up a new name for the payment to be completed hence the name change from Finback (term used by sugar cane farmers around Palmers Island / Yamba in the late 60's, early 70's with all the extra cars with surfboards and fins on the back driving to the point) to MRsinglefin (one of my favourite boards is a 7'6" retro singlefin with the bolt)

Thanks for the nice words mate.

Just on your username point - you should have been able to log in an "upgrade" your account. We can merge the two together if you like, just let me know if you want me to do so.
