"The starting point was a surf I had at Bells many years ago at the end of a day of competition. I had the experience of surfing with live music being played on the beach. It was a wonderful experience and it planted itself in my mind."

So says Tim Baker of the seed that germinated as (m)ocean, a synthesis of surfing and music that happened at Burleigh Heads in March.

It was, says Tim, "A way to celebrate surfing as a performing art rather than a competitive sport." It was also a popular event attracting a great many surfers, musicians, plus a headland full of happy punters.

(m)ocean was part of Bleach, an annual arts festival on the Gold Coast that Tim has contributed to since it began in 2012. He'll return in 2016 with a different take on surfing as a creative expression.
