2015 Yorkes Surfarama

The Daly Head National Surfing Reserve committee is stoked to announce that the 2015 Surfarama will be held from 5pm onwards on Saturday 10th January 2015.

The party will again be held at Timperon's Shearing Sheds 2km north of the Daly Head turnoff, on the Marion Bay to Corny Point Road. Just look for the old surfboard on the main road directing you to the property!

It promises to be a fun night with a range of entertainment for all ages, from Papa Dave whose clown act will have young and old alike in stitches, surf films on the big screen, our retro fashion parade where crazy/brave party goers are welcome to take to the catwalk dressed in their favourite retro attire, and some great live music for all generations to enjoy with plenty of opportunity to reacquaint with old friends from the South Australian surf community.

This year our headline act is the awesome psychedelic surf guitar sounds of 'GT Stringer'. DJ's Jesus Eggboy and Sandy Bunker will then take things through to the early hours of Sunday morning.

We have also endeavoured to present a fresh new range of art and sculptures from local artists and some classic surfboards on display including sixties single fins, 70's twinnies through to modern state of the art thrusters and quad-fin boards. Plus there will be photographs and memorabilia incorporating a 'Surfing Through the Ages' theme.

Camping sites are available on the property at Timperon's free of charge for those who make it to the party so there's no reason to get behind the wheel if you've had a few too many. Do the right thing and sleep off the nights festivities before hunting for a wave on the Sunday morning.

As usual there will be a variety of foods for purchase from curries (including a vegetarian variety) and lamb yiros to a good old fashion sausage sizzle that will keep everyone nourished on the night, with bacon and egg sangas and tea&coffee for the weary campers who make it till morning.

Soft drinks and locally produced bottled water 'PH8', drawn from a nearby pristine limestone filtered aquifer will be available for purchase, BYO alcohol as usual.

This year we will be asking for a $20 donation per person (kids free) at the door. The price includes one ticket in our raffle which will be drawn on the night. A brand new custom designed 100% Surfboard by Rodney 'Weasel' Bedford is first prize with quite a few other offerings in the mix including meals and accommodation at local businesses and artworks by renowned surf artists' Gerry Wedd and Jason 'Miff' Swales.

We also have t-shirts, books and other merchandise for sale if you'd like to further support our cause. Keep in mind there is no Eftpos facilities available so bring some cash if you'd like to purchase.

A consideration for us this year is raising additional funding to help achieve our upcoming projects. We recently gave a presentation to the newly elected Yorke Peninsula Council where we outlined our medium term goals which include construction of the Salmon Hole toilets, improved steps down to Daly's Main Break and a new set of steps/stairs to access the beach at Baby Lizards.

We hope to see all past party goers there this year and welcome any newbies to this family friendly event. For more info contact us at [email protected]

Wishing a safe and happy festive season to all the Swellnet community.

Indo-dreaming, I don't get your comment. What point are you actually trying to make? That we in SA are wingers? That our waves suck?? I for one, am stoked to hear this news.

SA surfers are historically always been very protective of there spots…has been funny to observe that its still true with posting on swell net from SA guys, more recently in the Wave of the day thread.

It was more a fun shit stir, poke in the ribs comment.

I think Indo is commenting on barley's winge about a 'Wave of the Day' picture of a local wave taken a few months ago.

People down here like everywhere have different opinions on the exposure thing and progress in general. Barley was quite a vocal opponent of the National Surfing Reserve concept and even commented that it could lead to a McDonald's being built on the headland one day!
He's entitled to his opinion but he did end up coming to last years Surfarama party so maybe he is coming around a bit?

It's true most surfers down this way like things as they are and don't want to see the place overly exposed. When the idea to have a WQS surfing competition was floated a few years ago we all united and it was quickly shot down.

But exposure can be a nessesary evil if an area like ours wishes to develop sustainable infrastructure to benefit the environment. We need to prevent the coastal fringe being degraded from foot traffic down the headland to the waves and from people crapping all over the place whenever they need to go to the toilet.

We decided that the NSR concept would help us to attract funds and grants from various levels of government to work towards these goals.
After our recent presentation to the Yorke Peninsula Council they have indicated support for our idea for a toilet at Salmon Hole and representatives are coming down in the near future to look at the area and what we are proposing.

As a committee member of the Daly Head NSR I'd like to publicly thank the Swellnet team for their support in helping promote our cause. I think this exposure has contributed to our success with Daly Head being awarded the Surfing Reserve of the Year for 2014, and with convincing the Yorke Peninsula Council that this area is a valued coastal amenity for both local and visiting surfers that is worth protecting.

Here's our promotional flyer for next Saturday nights event.

I tell ya what, a Mr Whippy van would do a roaring trade through the summer months. I can just imagine a gusty sou'easter pushing the sounds of "Greensleeves" over the DustBowl sand dunes as the van heads past the Lizards turn off.. a good fifteen minutes heads-up if you're in the water at Dalys!

Funnily enough an Ice Cream Van has been tried before Ben but was shut down by local traders. YS be good if you could post BSB and Acc numbers for those that can't make it but love the place and would like to contribute $20 anyway.

Yeah local surfer Billy tried to get approval for a mobile food/drink van to service surfing spots like Salmon Hole but the council knocked him back. It's a bummer really, it would of been nice to come in from a surf to an ice cream or cold drink.

On a sad note local surfer Richard Thomas passed away suddenly just after Xmas. Richard was one of the original local surfers on the Yorke Peninsula and even had a wave named after him which he surfed regularly up to the time of his death.
A ceremony is being planned in the near future and his ashes will be scattered over his favourite surfing spot 'Richard's Reef'.
He was 65.

Sad news YS, so I always heard Richard's was named after MR who walked down to surf it once when everyone was out at Pondie.

Interesting how stories get twisted, be good to get a plaque or something on the boardwalk to put all the myths to rest and as a tribute to him.

Yeah it was a great night udo. No rain(typical Yorkes) unlike the rest of the state, a bit blowy but the shearing shed was protected enough. We had a couple of hundred people turn up and heaps of families with kids.

The bands and entertainment were good and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We raised some funds to go towards our upcoming projects and it all ran smoothly.
Another successful Surfarama!

A few locals made up this memorial for Richard Thomas who sadly passed away just after Christmas. Brought a few tears and memories back for those that knew him but it was a fitting tribute to one of the real gentleman of the surf scene down here.

Miss Yorkes a lot. Sorry to hear about Richards passing. Much respect for those who made the place home, something East Coast surfers will never understand.

Thanks guys for what you have done for my old mate Richard. Have known him since we were surf mates 50 years ago, a lovely guy and will be missed very much by his brothers Michael and Graham and his close friends.

We used to go to Pondy a lot when we were in our teens and twentys and yes Richard did walk down the beach to the break now known as Richard's Reef.

Great memories.

There will be a special memorial service held down Yorkes not too far away. His brothers are organising it.

RIP Rich.
