How big do tsumamis get? - video

Swellnet Analysis

It took a while but it seems everyone has stopped using the incorrect term 'tidal wave' to describe a tsunami. So, now we're all on the same page, hows about we make a further distinction and categorise tsumani into regular tsunami and mega tsunami.

It all sounds very James Cameron but the difference is simple: regular tsunami are created by earthquakes, while their mega brethren are created by landslides displacing water. They're less common but far more destructive, as this descriptive little vid shows.

Don't believe everything you see or hear. This is a more realistic estimation of the K-T tsunami ......200m.

.......or less, good graphic of wave heights.

https://m.

Well that's the good news the bad news is that the size of the tsunami was limited by it striking shallow water. A similar impact in deep water could produce a much larger wave ...... but still probably not as large as shown above.

Yeah, looks like they gathered most of their info from wiki... (I love wiki but they're misrepresenting data & using poor reference examples)
1. Reference for the 5km height of the Chicxulub Tsunami is "Armageddon" Episode 2.3 (2007) of Lost Worlds, The History Channel, original air date: 15 August 2007. Not sure the history channel can be used as a scientific reference.
2. Appears they're quoting runup height of the wave not the actual tsunami wave height.

On behalf of the bodybash'n community. I wish to nominate Longarone surfers past and present for belated big wave award.
Record waveride height of 820ft easily dwarfs the biggest wave rides of today's surfers.
Surf it they did,no denying that.
The most hellish ride it must have been.

We're sorry for your loss and salute your courage and conviction.

Also nominate all Indian Ocean and Japanese tsunami victims and survivors into Big wave hall of fame.
Again we shall not forget.

I trust my fellow surfing community will continue to respect, acknowledge and honour the brave souls of 'Tsunami tragedies'.

Be ready to surf anywhere any time....
2011 Toowoomba Tidal wave and Grantham's Wall of Water took a heavy toll.
Again a large freak wave caught all off guard and swept whole town away.
Again our condolences!

Surfing's Hawaiian Past
1868 Holaua Kauai was washed out to sea on a tidal wave.Grabbing a passing plank,he rode the next wave,a 50 footer, right back to shore...(A pictorial history of Surfing)- Paul Hamlyn.

ps: I note Australian tsunami warning prohibits bikini babe toe dipping but orders every past and present skeg to hit the surf and rip the shit out of that tsunami.
We decide how big our tsunami should be....

Hooroo!

Good one, TrueBlu. I'd put my money on Captain Goodvibes. He was reported in a 1975 issue of Tracks as riding 150 foot crushers at the 'Gong, with pictures of his epic rides too.

Tsunami Height Comparison.

Astronauts tethered to power assist boys toyz orbiting Space Stations splutter out at 24m high Waves .

Non Powered & non Sticker assisted - Big Wave surfer's qualifiers kick in at 10x that height...200m

1980 St Helens - 200m was surfed by a small oared dingy
1963 Vajont Dam - 250m - party wave was bodybashed & bodyboarded on debris thru the town.
1946 Litua Bay - 520m - 2 surfed up & over mountain top trees in their small oared dingy.

Be cool if surfers could one day naturally respect biggest Wave Surfers...it's never gonna happen is it?
