Punters Club - Finals Day Billabong Pro Tahiti

Form Guide

flores_j5237tahiti15cestari_n.jpgIt was the morning of the finals and the conditions were similar to what they'd been all contest: 4-6 foot, windy, and shallow...

Kai Otton started early against Bruno Santos with five throw aways until he posted a 5.67 to begin the heat with about 15 minutes to go. Bruno answered back with a 4.73. Kai then extended his lead with a 7.83. Bruno answered back with a 7.03 but it wasn't enough. Took off on a wave in the last few minutes but couldn't complete and ended yet another great performance from the Teahupoo specialist.

The retiring yet reinvigorated CJ Hobgood had a ding dong battle with injury wildcard Aritz Aranburu. CJ posted the first points with a 7.83 but Aritz answered back with 6.43. CJ then posted a 6.53 and once again Aritz answered with a 7.57. Aritz only needed a 6.80 to take the lead with plenty on time on the clock, yet the bombs simply stopped dropping. The battlefield went flat and CJs dream run continued.

There were only seven waves caught in the last heat of Round 5 between Jeremy Flores and Wiggolly Dantas. It was a simple matter of whoever was on the best would progress – Flores did just that.

The Quarters Finals was full of heavyweights, none bigger than 6'4” event favourite Owen Wright. Wright was up against Italo Ferreira and put on a clinic with a finals berth seemingly a formality.

The biggest heat of the quarters was always going to be Kelly Slater against past Pipe Master, Past AI Award Winner, and current most improved surfer on tour, Jeremy Flores. Unfortunately the waves fell short of the occasion, but Kelly started things off quickly – as is his want – posting keepers from under priority. In contrast, Flores sat and waited and made the few waves he caught count. They were bigger, they were expertly ridden, and they won him the heat. Slater out, Flores progressed, and then it was on to the Semis.

Owen Wright hit a brick wall in his semi heat against last year's winner Gabriel Medina. Medina threw away two 7's in his convincing win while Wright was holding a 2.63 in his two wave total.

Flores continued his sit-and-wait approach against CJ who, like Slater before him, did his utmost to keep busy. And just like Slater, the strategy backfired; Jeremy patiently caught the best waves and dispatched CJ who was left in combo land.

So the final was 2010 Teahupoo champion Jeremy Flores vs last year's champion Gabriel Medina. Straight off the hooter Gabs tried paddling Flores up the point but he should've paid closer attention to Jeremy's strategy throughout the event. Which was to find your fave takeoff spot and wat for the waves to come. Which they did; Gabs scrapped into the first wave – a closeout – while Flores' first wave was a 9.87 with two judges giving him 10. And that, pretty much, was the final wrapped up the right there. Gabs tried keeping busy but Jeremy's poise held true and he only took off one one more wave for the heat scoring a 7.00 and securing his second win here at Chopes.

Despite falling early, Adrinao De Souza has been able to maintain his shark loving yellow jersey going into Trestles. Fortunately for ADS, Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson and Filipe Toledo all failed to overtake him. There's now less than 2,000 points between the top five, and Gabriel Medina and Jeremy Flores have now pushed their way into the top ten.

This is going to be one of the closest runs into the last four events and the world title. There are contestable surfers still in the lower seeds who could easily cause a few more upsets in the next few events, not including the Hawaiian wildcards known for causing big upsets at Pipe. The title is really anyone's right now. Go Owen!

Like a punt? Swellnet doesn't encourage it, but if you’re like Danny and want to wager some coin on the tour, the 2015 Billabong Pro Tahiti Punters Club is brought to you by William Hill.

Why did Toledo get no score against Ferriera? Did he withdraw due to injury?

He didn't catch any waves. I think he was waiting for the swell to drop so he could throw a few air reverses.

Not sure. I just watched it on Heat Analyser and he was in the water. Couldn't sit and watch it all the way through but it seemed he simply didn't catch any waves.

Anyone else see it?

Yep. He caught no waves. Blew his priority paddling for a wave he missed. Then he waited and waited....

Yadin Nichol did exactly the same thing in the final of the US Open a few years back. And that was a 3 foot Huntington so it was more brain snap then pussy footing.

Perhaps Filipe suffered something similar?

There was definitely something going on in Felipe's mind, maybe he decided to wait for a bigger wave that never came...
An absolute shocker for him, half way through the heat you would expect him to go and catch at least a few insiders. Pretty embarrassing stuff.
Calling him a pussy, well I think that is just classic internet hate, the kid is 20 years old and from Brazil living in San Diego so no real big wave experience for him and he did made it to round 5 after all.
I was pretty impressed with Italo though, pretty tough kid

No internet hate buddy, I didn't see the heat so I was asking if it was from being a pussy or something else.
I would hope it's something else.
No real excuse for not going though if it was out of fear. He is meant to be one of the top 34 surfers on the planet. His sponsors pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars. He's in the big boy league now. If he's scared he should have got there early and got used to the place.

I agree that he needs to work on these sort of waves and it is also true that he doesn't seem particularly interested, which what I don't really understand and is a bit of a worry but I would still cut him some slack for now, I think sometimes people's expectations are just too high for such a young guy.
He is the big boys league and he has earned that himself hasn't he?

Yep he's earned it himself and I love watching him surf. He's just got to have a crack, that's all

Filipe suffers from 'not huge enough leg' syndrome, clearly. Where does he get off calling himself elite?

That's the best claim I've ever seen - both hands on crotch, facing the judges squarely, and a few head pumps!
Go the Gath helmet - hope to see a few more guys wearing them out on the reefs - they're great.

Filipe's 'zero' heat was pretty funny.. his performances throughout the comp were pretty marginal. he's just too light for these types of waves/conditions. if there was a small wave tour he'd be destined to beat Kelly's record.

Wiggolly and Italo (especially) were pretty impressive. both of them chargers and both stylemasters. fun to watch. happy Brazil is starting to produce these types of pros.

i don't need to see Medina surf ever again.

how good was CJ?

stoked for Flores. one of the angriest ants on the tour. a notable charger these days but remember 5-7 years ago when there was a question over his big wave 'skills'? now despite a fractured noggin' he still hurled himself headfirst into the biggest waves of his heats.

great comp despite the lack of Aussies in the final.

I watched the heat recap of toledos heat today.
What the hell is that guy doing on tour if he is too scared to surf 4-6 ft chopes? 6ft being very generous..
Fuck he should be ashamed of himself.
As for being to light for those types of waves/conditions, Google Russell Bierke. 16/17 years old and paddling big chopes and other hell slabs around the joint.
This isn't a anti Brazzo rant, I love watching him surf when it's small but that was a fucken piss poor effort.

i take your point about Bierke. without wanting to turn this into a 'who's stronger?' debate, i'd guess Bierke has a couple of kegs on Toledo. i was more talking about physics than testicle size. the waves were just about always chopped up and bumpy. i think if it was glassy perfection (and not massive) then Toledo would've done better. still not good enough, but better.

tiny, you bet. so he'd also be bouncing all over the chopfest that was this year's comp, just probably deeper than Toledo.

Haha righto. You seem to be missing the point.
Russ is younger, still at high school, probably smaller in size, earns a fraction of what Felipe does by his sponsors, and isn't going for a world title... And he still would of taken off!
But you keep sticking up for Felipe.
I'm done.

nah, i got your point 100% (except for the high school bit). i wasn't really intending on 'sticking up' for Felipe just trying to be reasonable (or something) in my observation. riveting stuff.

But it was another lame event as per the precise prediction earlier - why didn't WSL time it right for this weeks swell eh?? No sponsors, no Christie re qualifying, no ones watching, no money back William Hill punting club, Onya Dirk!
