Gday Ben and Craig, I was just wondering in the automated Middleton/Wiatpinga surf forecast where do you get your wind forecasts from or are they generated by your computer model as well? I have noticed that they differ from the forecasts given by the BOM in both speed and direction on occasion. Also how often do your wind forecasts update? Just wanted to know as it could mean the difference between a 3 hour drive for crappy surf or missing out on good surf, cheers.

The winds forecasts are generated by the computer model and are GFS derived.

At the moment the resolution of the model isn't high enough to pick up local effects which occur around Victor such as winds tending W/NW under a general W'ly flow or W'ly winds when they're forecast to be W/SW or even SW.

Same if it's forecasting light E/SE it'll probably be light E/NE or even NE.

I'll mention this in my notes though.

The BOM forecast notes usually don't pick up these local effects either and they'll just forecast the overarching wind direction and speed.
